A custom HVAC project for an urban condo
In the lively Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie neighborhood, we recently completed the installation of a Generallux-Manuflow wall-mounted heat pump in a loft-style condo. This type of project perfectly illustrates how our team adapts each HVAC project to the architectural constraints and specific expectations of the occupants. Between exposed beams, high ceilings, and large windows, the objective was clear: to ensure consistent thermal comfort without compromising the industrial aesthetic of the home.
Client context and needs
The client was looking for a versatile solution capable of efficient heating in winter and cooling in summer , while ensuring reduced energy consumption. Like many residents of Montreal, they wanted a quick, discreet installation that would be eligible for energy subsidy programs available for approved heat pumps.
Installation details
-
Device type : single-zone wall-mounted heat pump
-
Brand : Generallux-Manuflow
-
Capacity : approximately 12,000 BTU (ideal for an open space of 500 to 600 sq. ft.)
-
Performance : Energy Star certified, optimized operation down to -25°C
The indoor unit was installed above the main window, at a strategic height allowing for even distribution of air throughout the living room. The refrigerant lines and wiring were routed vertically along the load-bearing wall. The loft configuration, with its solid wood beams and industrial ceiling, presented an aesthetic challenge that we met by ensuring a discreet route for the ducts .
Special technical points
-
Carefully drilled through the exterior wall to limit the visual impact.
-
Passage of the refrigeration line and the power cable in a duct adapted to the color of the wall.
-
Management of condensate drainage by gravity, thus avoiding the need for an additional pump.
-
Installation of a vapor barrier and rigorous insulation to maximize performance and prevent any energy loss.
The challenges encountered and our solutions
-
Ceiling height : with an exposed beam structure, the unit had to be positioned to optimize air circulation without compromising aesthetics.
→ We chose a central location, guaranteeing uniform diffusion and a harmonious design. -
Significant sun exposure : the large windows let in a lot of heat in summer.
→ The installed heat pump is equipped with an intelligent regulation mode which automatically adjusts the power according to the thermal load.
Benefits for the customer
-
4-season comfort : reliable heating even during Montreal's bitter cold and efficient air conditioning during heat waves.
-
Energy savings thanks to the high coefficient of performance (COP > 4 in heating mode).
-
Accessible subsidies : the installation makes the customer eligible for assistance from programs such as LogisVert and Rénoclimat.
-
Discretion and aesthetics : harmonious integration into the industrial environment of the condo.
