In this Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie duplex, the owner was looking for an efficient solution to heat and cool both the upper floor and the stairwell leading to the ground floor. Temperature variations were significant: too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter, and a constant draft near the stairs.
We recommended the installation of a Gree wall-mounted heat pump in the strategic space of the stairwell, above the window, in order to distribute air evenly over both levels.
Project context in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie
The dwelling is typical of this Montreal neighborhood: narrow interior staircase, relatively high ceiling, central window providing some natural light, and a ceiling fan already in place.
This type of configuration presents several challenges:
-
Hot air tends to rise and accumulate at the top of the stairs.
-
The ground floor often remains cooler, especially at the beginning and end of the season.
-
Existing heating systems (baseboard or aging central system) do not always allow for fine temperature regulation according to zones.
Our objective was therefore twofold: to stabilize comfort on both levels and to reduce energy consumption thanks to a high-performance wall-mounted heat pump.
Choosing a Gree wall-mounted heat pump
For this project, we installed a new generation Gree wall-mounted heat pump , with a capacity adapted to the area served (approximately 12,000 BTU to cover the stairwell, the upper floor and part of the ground floor).
Why Gree for this Rosemont client?
-
High energy efficiency : inverter technology allows power to be modulated according to the actual need, instead of operating in on or off mode.
-
Winter heating performance : the heat pump is designed to offer good performance even during Quebec's cold weather, down to about -25°C.
-
Quiet operation : ideal for a circulation area such as a staircase where noise would be particularly disturbing.
-
Reliability and durability : Gree is one of the brands we regularly install, with a very positive history in terms of service and longevity.
By combining the device's capacity, the staircase configuration, and the presence of a ceiling fan, we were able to offer a complete solution for home comfort.
An optimized installation in the stairwell
Strategic positioning above the window
We installed the indoor unit above the window overlooking the staircase , perfectly centered on the wall. This positioning offers several advantages:
-
Ideal vertical and horizontal diffusion : the blown air naturally descends along the staircase and is then distributed upwards and downwards.
-
Maximum use of ceiling height : the heat pump captures the warmer air accumulated at the top to redistribute it efficiently.
-
Refined aesthetics : the white Gree wall head blends into the light wall, without visually overloading this already narrow space.
As you can see from the photo, the area behind the unit has been prepared and leveled, ensuring a clean, stable and durable installation.
Management of refrigeration connections and drainage
Behind the wall unit are:
-
The refrigeration lines that connect the indoor unit to the outdoor compressor.
-
The condensation drain , essential for removing the water produced in air conditioning mode.
-
Electrical communication and power cabling .
We transported these items discreetly to the outside, respecting:
-
the slopes necessary for reliable gravity drainage,
-
Insulating the pipes to prevent energy loss and condensation formation,
-
The electrical standards in force in Quebec.
The Gree compressor is installed outside, on a support adapted to the Montreal climate, clear of snow and with easy access for maintenance.
Synergy with the ceiling fan
A key feature of this project is the presence of a ceiling fan in the stairwell . Combined with the Gree heat pump, this configuration allows for:
-
to circulate warm air downwards in winter, reducing stratification;
-
to improve the circulation of cold air in summer, for a more uniform feeling of coolness;
-
to reduce the number of cycles of the heat pump, which helps to extend its lifespan and reduce electricity consumption.
We advised the client on the best fan speed and rotation direction settings depending on the season, in order to take full advantage of this synergy.
Comfort, performance and energy savings
In practice, this type of installation offers several concrete benefits for the owner:
-
Consistent comfort between the upper floor and the ground floor: no more rooms that are too hot upstairs and too cold downstairs.
-
Precise temperature control : the Gree remote control allows adjustment to within half a degree, with several modes (heating, air conditioning, dehumidification, ventilation).
-
Potential reduction in heating costs : the wall-mounted heat pump uses electricity to move heat rather than produce it, which is much more efficient than traditional baseboard heaters.
-
Dehumidification in summer : in addition to cooling, the device removes excess humidity, significantly improving comfort during heat waves.
-
Quiet operation : ideal for a staircase often adjacent to bedrooms and living spaces.
We took the time to show the customer how to use the different functions, washable filters, eco modes and time programs in order to maximize savings.
