The full story

The article, chapter by chapter

In an apartment in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension, a couple wanted to improve the comfort of their master bedroom while reducing their reliance on electric baseboard heaters. Harsh winters, increasingly hot summers, and the noise of portable devices... it was time to switch to a modern, quiet, and efficient solution.

Our AirGreen team therefore installed a Gree wall-mounted heat pump , perfectly suited to this type of Montreal home.

Context: a room with inconsistent comfort, both summer and winter

The room to be treated is typical of apartments in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension:

  • Light-colored walls, textured ceiling;

  • Medium size, ideal for a master bedroom or office;

  • Initial heating provided by electric baseboard heaters;

  • No permanent air conditioning, only a small portable unit in the summer.

The owners were experiencing several irritants:

  • Stifling heat in July and August , especially at night;

  • Significant temperature variations in winter, with colder areas;

  • Noise from portable devices, which is not very compatible with restful sleep;

  • High electricity consumption during peak periods.

The objective was therefore clear: to offer four-season comfort , with a quiet, aesthetic and energy-efficient solution.

The chosen solution: a high-efficiency Gree wall-mounted heat pump

For this project, we installed a Gree wall-mounted heat pump , a single-zone mini-split type, of approximately 9,000 to 12,000 BTU , a perfect range for a good-sized bedroom in a Montreal apartment.

Main features

  • Machine type: wall-mounted heat pump (mini-split);

  • Brand: Gree;

  • Inverter technology: continuous power modulation for maximum comfort and minimum consumption;

  • Efficient heating function even in cold weather, ideal for Montreal's climate;

  • Very quiet air conditioning function , perfect for a bedroom;

  • Integrated temperature display on the front of the unit, visible in the photo (set to 61 – usually in degrees Fahrenheit), convenient for checking the chosen setting at a glance.

The combination of these elements makes it possible to obtain a stable temperature, without "heat waves" or "cold waves".

Interior installation details: high on the wall, maximum comfort

The photo shows the Gree wall unit installed very close to the ceiling , centered on the wall. This positioning is strategic:

  1. Optimized air circulation
    Positioned high up, the heat pump can circulate the air in the room more effectively. In heating mode, the warm air naturally descends into the occupied area. In cooling mode, the cool air is distributed throughout the room, without blowing directly on the occupants.

  2. Clearances respected

    • Sufficient distance between the top of the unit and the textured ceiling to ensure good air intake;

    • Free space on the sides, allowing for easy maintenance and air circulation in accordance with the recommendations of the manufacturer Gree.

  3. Clean, minimalist aesthetic
    The wall is deliberately left clear: only two small, discreet wall brackets are visible below, ready to accommodate a frame or decorative element.
    The Gree unit, with its minimalist white design, blends into the decor and becomes a simple element of the room.

Refrigeration system, drainage and power supply

Although the photo focuses on the indoor unit, the quality of an AirGreen installation also depends on what you don't see.

Refrigeration connections

  • Refrigerant pipes run directly behind the unit, through the wall, to limit the visual impact;

  • Use of robust external covers to protect the connections from weather and UV rays;

  • Brazed or flare fittings properly tightened and tested to prevent any refrigerant leaks.

Condensation drain management

In air conditioning mode, the unit produces condensation. Therefore, we have:

  • A gravity drain with a continuous slope is planned;

  • Checked the drainage at the end of the project to prevent any risk of water leakage onto the wall or floor;

  • Position the drain outlet in a discreet location, away from main traffic areas.

Electrical connection

  • Dedicated circuit run to the electrical panel, with a suitable circuit breaker;

  • Compliance with the standards of the Quebec Electrical Code;

  • Secure grounding and connections for reliable and safe use.

Performance and comfort in Montreal's climate

In Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension, residents face significant temperature fluctuations every year: from temperatures that can drop below -20°C to humid heat waves exceeding 30°C. The installed Gree wall-mounted heat pump perfectly addresses this reality.

In winter

  • Fast and stable heating of the room, even on the coldest nights;

  • Less reliance on electric baseboard heaters, resulting in a lower electricity bill ;

  • Ability to maintain a constant temperature , ideal for sleep.

In summer

  • Efficient air conditioning, capable of bringing the temperature back to a comfortable level in a short time;

  • Dehumidification function which significantly improves the feeling of comfort, even with a moderate temperature setting;

  • Very low noise level, allowing you to sleep, read or work without being disturbed.

Daily use and maintenance

During the commissioning process, we assisted the homeowners to ensure they got the most out of their new Gree heat pump:

  • Explanation of operating modes (heating, air conditioning, dehumidification, ventilation, auto);

  • Recommendations for winter settings (maintaining a stable setpoint) and for summer settings (using dehumidification mode on very humid days);

  • Tips for cleaning filters : ideally every 4 to 6 weeks, especially in a room where a lot of time is spent.

Regular basic maintenance helps to preserve:

  • Energy performance ;

  • Air quality ;

  • The longevity of the equipment .

For more advanced operations (deep cleaning, refrigeration check, electrical inspection), our team offers a professional maintenance service.

Advantages for occupants

Since the installation of this Gree wall-mounted heat pump, the occupants of the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension apartment have been enjoying:

  • Four-season thermal comfort , perfectly suited to Montreal's climate;

  • Enjoy a more peaceful sleep thanks to the device's quiet operation;

  • A potential reduction in their energy costs , particularly in winter;

  • With modern equipment that enhances their home .

    1. Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.

    2. The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.

    3. Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.

    4. A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.

    5. The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.

    6. On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.

    7. The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.

    Frequently asked questions

    What people ask us about this kind of work

    12 questions
    Does a wall-mounted heat pump heat in winter?
    Yes, it heats and cools. Its capacity drops in very cold weather; the operating range depends on the model and is listed on its spec sheet.
    Wall-mounted or multi-zone: how do I choose?
    One wall head and one condenser outside: the direct solution for a room or an open area. For two to five rooms, a multi-zone puts one head in each room on a single condenser.
    Where does the outdoor unit go?
    Where it stays above the snow, clear and accessible, away from walkways. We decide it with you during the estimate.
    Are there grants?
    Depending on the model and your situation, assistance programs may apply, including Hydro-Québec's LogisVert. AirGreen checks the model number before quoting an amount. See the grants.
    Do I need a permit?
    Rules vary from city to city: location, distances, noise. See permits and by-laws, and we check for your address.
    How cold can it heat?
    It depends on the model. According to Hydro-Québec, newer models work down to a temperature between −15 °C and −25 °C, and some cold-climate models are certified lower. The minimum temperature is on each unit's spec sheet.
    How much can I save?
    Hydro-Québec says a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months. The result depends on the house, the climate and how it is used.
    How is the LogisVert assistance calculated?
    For ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified heat pumps, Hydro-Québec lists assistance of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heating capacity at −8 °C. AirGreen checks the exact model before quoting an amount; only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted. See the grants.
    Is it noisy?
    The sound level depends on the model and is listed in decibels on each unit's spec sheet. Location matters too: when possible, we avoid putting the outdoor unit under a bedroom window.
    The outdoor unit is covered in ice: is that normal?
    Some frost is: the unit runs defrost cycles. Never hit the ice. If the unit stays iced up or stops heating, call us.
    Does AirGreen hold the required licences?
    Yes. AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subclasses 15.8 Ventilation, 15.10 Refrigeration and 16 Electricity.
    Is the estimate free?
    Yes. The on-site estimate is free and the quote follows within 24 hours. Book my free estimate.
