A neat wall installation in a room where the available height was limited

In this project carried out in Saint-Léonard, our AirGreen team installed a GREE VITA R32 wall-mounted heat pump in an indoor space where the location had to be chosen with great precision. The photo shows a wall unit installed very close to the top of the wall, under a slightly protruding ceiling area, with limited visual clearance and a configuration that required perfect alignment. This type of installation is common in many residences in Montreal, especially in areas where rooms have been renovated, modified, or arranged with soffits, built-in storage, dropped ceilings, or partially occupied walls.

Here, the challenge was not simply to mount a wall air conditioner in the right place. It was necessary to integrate the mini split into an already structured area, preserve the interior appearance, ensure good access for HVAC maintenance, respect the clearances needed for air circulation, and guarantee stable performance both in cooling and auxiliary heating.

The GREE VITA R32 was well suited for this context thanks to its compact wall-mounted design, quiet operation, and inverter technology. According to GREE Canada, the VITA R32 range is available in capacities of 9,000, 12,000, 18,000, and 24,000 BTU, with 115 V or 230 V power supply depending on the chosen configuration, and includes notably G20 Inverter technology, built-in Wi-Fi, a remote control with LCD screen, an optional wired wall thermostat, a composite drainage tray, copper/aluminum coils, Blue Fin fins, and R32 refrigerant.

A high wall location: convenient but demanding

The unit shown in the image is installed high up, in an area where the space between the top of the device and the ceiling requires special attention. A wall-mounted heat pump generally draws air from the top before processing it and blowing it forward and downward. If the device is placed too close to an obstacle, efficiency can decrease, noise can increase, and access to the filters can become less convenient.

In this installation in Saint-Léonard, we therefore carefully checked:

  • the available upper clearance;
  • the horizontal alignment of the unit;
  • the reach of the air jet into the room;
  • the possible passage of refrigerant lines;
  • the slope of the condensate drain;
  • access to filters for future cleanings;
  • visual consistency with existing surfaces.

This attention is essential in houses and apartments in Montreal, where wall space is often shared between windows, doors, cabinets, moldings, ceiling drops, and decorative elements. A successful installation must be functional but also clean and durable.

Why the GREE VITA R32 was suitable for this project

The GREE VITA R32 is an interesting residential solution for customers who want an efficient wall-mounted heat pump without installing a central ducted system. It allows cooling a targeted area, improving comfort during humid periods, and adding a convenient heating source during cold or transitional seasons.

In the configurations published by GREE Canada, the VITA R32 9,000 BTU, for example, shows a cooling capacity of 9,100 BTU/h, a heating capacity of 10,000 BTU/h, a SEER2 of 20.5, an HSPF2 of 8.8, an EER2 of 12.5, and a COP2 of 3.80. GREE also indicates an indoor noise level that can drop as low as 24 dB(A), as well as a heating operating range down to -25 °C for this configuration.

For the larger versions of the same range, the VITA R32 brochure indicates nominal cooling capacities of 12,000, 18,000, and 24,000 BTU/h, allowing the choice of the device to be adapted to the reality of the room or area to be treated.

In this project, the choice of the device was not based solely on the area. Our technicians took into account the actual layout of the home: air volume, insulation, sun exposure, circulation between rooms, available height, surrounding materials, and daily use of the space. This analysis helps avoid the two most common mistakes: choosing a unit that is too weak, which works relentlessly, or a unit that is too strong, which quickly reaches the requested temperature without properly stabilizing humidity.

A discreet integration into an already furnished interior environment

The photo shows a close installation, with a white unit blending into a light decor. The choice of location keeps the lower part of the wall free, which is often an advantage in residential spaces in Saint-Léonard, where furniture, storage, or passage areas already occupy a good part of the room.

This type of installation requires great precision because the device becomes visible as soon as you enter the room. A slight tilt, a poorly placed duct, or bad centering can immediately give the impression of sloppy work. Our team therefore paid special attention to the level, the top line, the finish, and the operation of the diffusion flap.

The wall-mounted heat pump also had to remain accessible. Filters must be removable and cleanable without difficulty. The front panel must open properly. Technicians must be able to intervene in case of diagnosis or HVAC maintenance. Installing a unit too tightly in a limited space may seem convenient at the moment, but it can cause complications later.

The role of R32 refrigerant in recent systems

The VITA R32 model uses the R32 refrigerant, mentioned in the specifications of the range by GREE Canada. The same documentation also states that GREE Canada indoor units are equipped with a refrigerant leak detector.

For owners in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore, this highlights an important point: installing a mini split should never be treated as just a simple household appliance to hang on the wall. Refrigerant connections, vacuum pulling, pipe insulation, leak tests, and commissioning must be performed by qualified professionals.

At AirGreen, we emphasize the quality of the invisible steps. A device may seem perfectly installed, but its actual performance depends on the thoroughness of the work behind the wall: connections, drain, wiring, communication between units, electrical power stability, and startup validation.

The specific challenges of this installation in Saint-Léonard

This installation presented several concrete challenges.

Work near the ceiling without compromising performance

The upper space had to be used intelligently. The device had to be high enough to free the wall but not so high as to hinder air intake. This nuance makes all the difference in a wall air conditioner installation. A too tight location can reduce efficiency, especially during the hot and humid days of Montreal summer.

Maintain a clean interior finish

In a residential environment, finish matters as much as performance. We worked to ensure the unit integrates neatly, without leaving unnecessary marks, without creating visual misalignment, and without compromising the future use of the room.

Ensure reliable condensate drainage

In cooling mode, the unit removes humidity from the air. This water must be drained in a controlled way. An insufficient slope, a poorly positioned drain, or a poorly anticipated passage can cause drops, odors, or marks on surfaces. In a high installation like this, drainage planning is a key step.

Plan for future maintenance

A good HVAC project is also judged after several years of use. Our technicians ensure that the unit can be maintained without complex disassembly. Filters must remain accessible, and the device must be inspectable if needed.

A wall heat pump that improves comfort without transforming the room

One of the advantages of the GREE VITA R32 is that it improves comfort without changing the interior architecture. In this residence in Saint-Léonard, the wall installation allowed adding air conditioning and supplementary heating without ducts, without a floor unit, and without invasive work throughout the house.

This type of solution is particularly relevant for:

  • a bedroom that becomes too hot in summer;
  • a living room where humidity makes the air heavy;
  • a renovated room where the old system is no longer sufficient;
  • a home where ducts are to be avoided;
  • a living area that requires independent control;
  • a floor where the temperature varies compared to the rest of the house.

Inverter technology allows the device to modulate its operation rather than only working in abrupt cycles. The desired result is a more stable temperature, better humidity control, and more comfortable daily use.

Subsidies and eligibility: verify the exact model before starting work

Clients installing a wall-mounted heat pump in Quebec often ask us about subsidies. Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert program can offer financial aid for certain eligible heat pumps, but conditions depend on the exact model, installed configuration, work date, and criteria in effect at the time of application. Hydro-Québec states the program can offer up to $6,700 for an efficient heat pump, depending on applicable conditions.

Information published by AirGreen on the GREE VITA R32 12,000 BTU 115 V specifically indicates that this model is not ENERGY STAR certified and shows a LogisVert subsidy of $0 in the November 26, 2025 update.

That’s why we always recommend verifying eligibility before finalizing the device choice. Two units that seem similar can have different AHRI sheets, performance at -8 °C, or ENERGY STAR statuses. At AirGreen, we help clients understand these distinctions to avoid unpleasant surprises after installation.

Practical tips for properly using a GREE VITA R32

After an installation like this, we take the time to explain best practices to the client. A heat pump performs better when used correctly.

For air conditioning, a moderate and stable setting is often more effective than a very low setting. The dehumidification mode can be useful on heavy humidity days. The louvers should be oriented to distribute air throughout the room without directing a cold jet directly at a seating area.

For heating, it is better to let the device modulate rather than turning it on and off constantly. The temperature becomes more stable, and the device operates under better conditions.

For maintenance, we recommend:

  • clean the filters regularly;
  • keep the indoor unit clear;
  • avoid blocking the airflow with tall furniture;
  • ensure the outdoor unit remains free of leaves, snow, or ice;
  • schedule professional maintenance when usage is heavy;
  • monitor for any unusual noise or drop in performance.

These simple actions extend the system's lifespan and help maintain consistent comfort.

AirGreen in Saint-Léonard: expertise tailored to Montreal buildings

Saint-Léonard features a wide variety of housing: bungalows, duplexes, multigenerational homes, condos, and renovated apartments. This diversity requires a flexible approach. An installation that works perfectly in a Laval home may not be suitable for a Montreal apartment. A project on the South Shore may offer more outdoor space, while a project in Longueuil or on the North Shore may present other access, distance, or structural constraints.

Our job is to adapt each HVAC installation to the actual building. In this project, a high placement was the best solution to preserve space, integrate the unit into the decor, and ensure effective distribution. However, the installation required precise execution, as the limited clearance and proximity to the ceiling left little room for error.

A compact, clean installation designed to last

This installation of a GREE VITA R32 wall heat pump in Saint-Léonard shows that a good HVAC project depends on much more than just choosing a unit. Performance also depends on location, drainage, clearance, quality of connections, maintenance access, and the team's ability to understand the room's constraints.

In this case, AirGreen installed a discreet, well-integrated mini split wall air conditioner adapted to a space where every detail mattered. The GREE VITA R32 offers a modern solution for residential comfort, while the professional installation ensures reliable operation and a finish that meets the owners' expectations.

For customers in Saint-Léonard, Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore, this project highlights the importance of a thorough evaluation before installation. The right unit must be chosen, but above all, it must be installed in the right place, using the right methods and with a long-term vision.

    2. The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.

    3. Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.

    4. A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.

    5. The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.

    6. On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.

    7. The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.

    Frequently asked questions

    What people ask us about this kind of work

    12 questions
    Does a wall-mounted heat pump heat in winter?
    Yes, it heats and cools. Its capacity drops in very cold weather; the operating range depends on the model and is listed on its spec sheet.
    Wall-mounted or multi-zone: how do I choose?
    One wall head and one condenser outside: the direct solution for a room or an open area. For two to five rooms, a multi-zone puts one head in each room on a single condenser.
    Where does the outdoor unit go?
    Where it stays above the snow, clear and accessible, away from walkways. We decide it with you during the estimate.
    Are there grants?
    Depending on the model and your situation, assistance programs may apply, including Hydro-Québec's LogisVert. AirGreen checks the model number before quoting an amount. See the grants.
    Do I need a permit?
    Rules vary from city to city: location, distances, noise. See permits and by-laws, and we check for your address.
    How cold can it heat?
    It depends on the model. According to Hydro-Québec, newer models work down to a temperature between −15 °C and −25 °C, and some cold-climate models are certified lower. The minimum temperature is on each unit's spec sheet.
    How much can I save?
    Hydro-Québec says a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months. The result depends on the house, the climate and how it is used.
    How is the LogisVert assistance calculated?
    For ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified heat pumps, Hydro-Québec lists assistance of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heating capacity at −8 °C. AirGreen checks the exact model before quoting an amount; only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted. See the grants.
    Is it noisy?
    The sound level depends on the model and is listed in decibels on each unit's spec sheet. Location matters too: when possible, we avoid putting the outdoor unit under a bedroom window.
    The outdoor unit is covered in ice: is that normal?
    Some frost is: the unit runs defrost cycles. Never hit the ice. If the unit stays iced up or stops heating, call us.
    Does AirGreen hold the required licences?
    Yes. AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subclasses 15.8 Ventilation, 15.10 Refrigeration and 16 Electricity.
    Is the estimate free?
    Yes. The on-site estimate is free and the quote follows within 24 hours. Book my free estimate.
