In this beautiful wooden staircase of a house in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, our AirGreen team recently installed a Sharp ZU1 12,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump . The client's goal: to make a hallway and an entire floor comfortable, a space that was long difficult to heat in winter and stifling in summer, while preserving the warm character of the wood.
Context: a central staircase that is difficult to air-condition
In many Rosemont homes, the central staircase acts as a "thermal chimney":
-
In winter, heat accumulates there without being distributed efficiently;
-
In summer, the hot air rises and makes the upstairs rooms uncomfortable.
Here, the staircase is entirely clad in diagonal wood paneling, with a relatively low ceiling at the top and little workspace. Yet, it's the ideal location to install a wall-mounted heat pump unit : it can blow air up the corridor and then direct it to the adjacent rooms.
After analyzing the volume to be air-conditioned and the lifestyle habits of the occupants, we recommended a Sharp ZU1 12,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump , a compact, efficient model perfectly suited to this type of vertical configuration.
Choosing a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump
The Sharp ZU1 series is a line of R-32 wall-mounted heat pumps designed for the Quebec residential market. It is distinguished by:
-
Excellent energy efficiency , allowing for electricity savings in both heating and air conditioning.
-
A high level of sound discretion , essential in a narrow staircase where the slightest noise echoes.
-
A clean design that blends well with renovated interiors while respecting the style of older houses.
In this project, the 12,000 BTU capacity offers an ideal balance: enough power to condition the air in the stairwell and surrounding rooms, without oversizing the equipment or generating excessively short cycles.
Positioning the wall-mounted head in the stairwell
Installing it on a staircase is always tricky. We chose to position the head on the wall:
-
At the very top of the stairwell , just under the ceiling, where the air can spread to the floor and descend by convection.
-
On the wooden wall at the end of the corridor , which allows for a more even distribution of air and avoids blowing directly on the occupants.
-
At a safe distance from the ceiling light, respecting the clearances recommended by the manufacturer for air circulation and maintenance.
Before even installing the unit, our team protected the paneling with cardboard and set up a stable stepladder to work at height in this confined space. This preparation minimizes the risk of damage and allows us to drill cleanly for the refrigerant lines and drain.
Duct, drain and aesthetic management
Although the photo mainly highlights the inner part of the head, particular attention has been paid to everything that is not visible or barely visible:
-
Refrigeration lines : discreet passage through the wall, with careful casing where they become visible.
-
Condensation drain : controlled slope to prevent any backflow of water, particularly important in a staircase where the slightest leak could damage the wood or create a risk of slipping.
-
Power supply : clean integration, with an accessible control box on the side wall and a dedicated circuit breaker on the main panel, in accordance with Electrical Code standards.
Our priority was to respect the warm aesthetic of the wood paneling . The white of the Sharp wall unit contrasts slightly with the wood, but its compact shape and high position make it a discreet element that quickly fades into the background.
Four-season comfort in a Rosemont home
Thanks to this Sharp wall-mounted heat pump, the homeowners now benefit from:
-
Effective cooling in summer : fresh air naturally descends along the stairs and tempers the upstairs bedrooms as well as the ground floor.
-
Stable heating in mid-season and winter : the heat pump takes over from the main system to maintain a comfortable temperature, reducing dependence on more energy-intensive systems.
-
A better temperature balance between the bottom and top of the house, a recurring problem in the vertical staircases typical of Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie.
Sharp's inverter compressor technology allows the machine to automatically adjust its power according to demand, improving comfort while reducing operating costs.
A safe and customer-friendly installation
Installations in confined spaces and at height require a rigorous methodology:
-
Setting up a safe workstation (step ladder, support points, sufficient lighting).
-
Surface protection (paneling, stair treads, stringers) to prevent scratches and impacts.
-
Complete cleaning of the work area at the end of the project, cardboard and materials removed, functional tests carried out with the client.
As always at AirGreen, we take the time to:
-
Explain to the customer how the remote control works , the heating/cooling/dehumidification modes, and the setpoint and ventilation settings.
-
Demonstrate good maintenance habits : regular cleaning of filters, clearing of the outdoor unit, visual inspection of the drain.
