Generic diagram: wall-mounted heat pump, indoor and outdoor units

In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.

Generic illustration of this type of installation, not a survey of this job site. Tap a number.

  1. Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.

  2. The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.

  3. Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.

  4. A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.

  5. The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.

  6. On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.

  7. The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.

In Verdun, many condos and apartments have been designed to maximize every square inch. Utility spaces (laundry, storage, closets) are often grouped together in small, closed cupboards. In this project, our mission at AirGreen was clear: to integrate a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump into a Verdun condo, respecting these space constraints while providing year-round comfort.

Context: Air conditioning and heating without encroaching on living space

The client lives in a modern condo in Verdun, with:

  • A laundry closet combining washer-dryer and storage.

  • Very few free walls in the main living area.

  • A priority: to achieve stable comfort in summer as in winter , without multiplying devices or visible wires.

We suggested installing a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump positioned above the laundry room's sliding doors. This positioning allows for:

  • To free up the walls of the living room and bedroom , often occupied by furniture.

  • To provide efficient air distribution to the adjacent open area.

  • To keep the unit discreet, integrated into the interior architecture.

System type: Sharp R-32 wall-mounted heat pump

The installed unit is a Sharp brand wall-mounted heat pump (mini-split) , using R-32 refrigerant classified A2L . This choice reflects the new generation of more efficient and environmentally friendly systems.

System features:

  • Brand: Sharp

  • Type: Wall-mounted heat pump (mini-split)

  • Model: Sharp ZU1 R-32, 12,000 BTU (ideal configuration for a capacitor of this size)

  • Refrigerant: R-32 A2L, with low environmental impact

This ZU1 model offers an excellent compromise between compactness, silence and performance , particularly suitable for condos where the indoor unit is located close to living and sleeping areas.

A neat interior integration above the laundry room

The photo clearly shows:

  • The Sharp wall-mounted head is installed at the very top of the wall, near the ceiling.

  • Just below, the sliding doors of the laundry room with integrated washer and dryer.

This type of installation requires precise planning:

  1. Height and clearances
    The unit is positioned high enough to allow the blown air to descend and distribute itself throughout the room, while respecting the clearances recommended by Sharp above the casing.

  2. Access for maintenance
    Despite the proximity of the ceiling, the unit remains accessible for:

    • Cleaning the filters ;

    • Basic checks (indicators, shutters, sensors);

    • Maintenance interventions.

  3. Visual discretion
    The heat pump follows the ceiling line and blends in with the white walls. Once the laundry room doors are closed, the unit disappears into the decor and doesn't visually clutter the space.

Performance and comfort in a Verdun condo

This typical Verdun condo now benefits from:

  • Rapid air conditioning during summer heat waves;

  • Efficient heating from the mid-season onwards, allowing for a reduction in the use of electric baseboard heaters;

  • With quiet operation , ideal when the laundry room is located near the bedroom or home office.

Sharp's technology enables:

  • Precise temperature regulation , with fine control of ventilation speeds;

  • Various operating modes (heating, air conditioning, dehumidification, ventilation only);

  • A night mode that reduces noise and temperature variations for a comfortable sleep.

Choosing R-32 A2L: a heat pump designed for the future

The marking A2L , indicating the use of R-32 refrigerant , is clearly visible on the indoor unit. This refrigerant offers several advantages:

  • Reduced global warming potential compared to R-410A;

  • Better energy efficiency , therefore lower electricity bills for the customer;

  • A system designed to last, while respecting current environmental guidelines.

At AirGreen, we have mastered the specific standards for A2L refrigerants (R-32, R-454B, etc.), which guarantees a safe installation, in accordance with the rules in force in Quebec.

An installation designed for everyday use

Beyond the technical aspects, we also took everyday life into account:

  • The laundry room remains fully functional : the unit does not obstruct the opening of the doors, nor the use of the washer-dryer.

  • The customer can ventilate the laundry room as needed, without disrupting the operation of the heat pump.

  • The supply zone is directed towards the main room, which allows the living space to be cooled or heated uniformly .

The result: a virtually invisible system, but whose comfort is felt as soon as you enter the condo.

AirGreen's expertise in Verdun and throughout Greater Montreal

This project perfectly illustrates our approach:

  • Site analysis : type of building, interior/exterior configuration, lifestyle habits.

  • Equipment choice : here, a Sharp ZU1 wall- mounted unit sized for the condo.

  • Optimized installation : integration into a restricted space (above a laundry room) while maintaining accessibility and performance.

  • Compliance with standards : R-32 A2L refrigerant, clearances, condensate drainage, safe wiring.

Whether you live in Verdun, Le Sud-Ouest, Rosemont, Laval, on the South Shore or the North Shore , we always adapt the solution to your reality: single-family home, plex, new condo or renovated apartment.

The steps

How it goes, from the first call to the end

The main steps of this kind of job at AirGreen. Every house has its quirks: the estimate brings them out.

Step 1 of 9The on-site estimate

We look at the room, the outside wall, the line route and where the outdoor unit will go. That is where the capacity gets chosen.

Your numbers

And at your place?

Two quick checks with real numbers: what heat costs, and what your current heaters add up to in BTU/h.

    Frequently asked questions

    What people ask us about this kind of work

    12 questions
    Does a wall-mounted heat pump heat in winter?
    Yes, it heats and cools. Its capacity drops in very cold weather; the operating range depends on the model and is listed on its spec sheet.
    Wall-mounted or multi-zone: how do I choose?
    One wall head and one condenser outside: the direct solution for a room or an open area. For two to five rooms, a multi-zone puts one head in each room on a single condenser.
    Where does the outdoor unit go?
    Where it stays above the snow, clear and accessible, away from walkways. We decide it with you during the estimate.
    Are there grants?
    Depending on the model and your situation, assistance programs may apply, including Hydro-Québec's LogisVert. AirGreen checks the model number before quoting an amount. See the grants.
    Do I need a permit?
    Rules vary from city to city: location, distances, noise. See permits and by-laws, and we check for your address.
    How cold can it heat?
    It depends on the model. According to Hydro-Québec, newer models work down to a temperature between −15 °C and −25 °C, and some cold-climate models are certified lower. The minimum temperature is on each unit's spec sheet.
    How much can I save?
    Hydro-Québec says a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months. The result depends on the house, the climate and how it is used.
    How is the LogisVert assistance calculated?
    For ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified heat pumps, Hydro-Québec lists assistance of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heating capacity at −8 °C. AirGreen checks the exact model before quoting an amount; only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted. See the grants.
    Is it noisy?
    The sound level depends on the model and is listed in decibels on each unit's spec sheet. Location matters too: when possible, we avoid putting the outdoor unit under a bedroom window.
    The outdoor unit is covered in ice: is that normal?
    Some frost is: the unit runs defrost cycles. Never hit the ice. If the unit stays iced up or stops heating, call us.
    Does AirGreen hold the required licences?
    Yes. AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subclasses 15.8 Ventilation, 15.10 Refrigeration and 16 Electricity.
    Is the estimate free?
    Yes. The on-site estimate is free and the quote follows within 24 hours. Book my free estimate.
