Installation of a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump in Plateau-Mont-Royal

In typical Plateau-Mont-Royal duplexes, air circulation is often a challenge: high ceilings, narrow stairwells, rooms spread over several split levels. For this project, our AirGreen team was tasked with improving the comfort of a family living in a warm duplex… that was difficult to heat and cool evenly.

We recommended and installed aSharp wall-mounted heat pump , model Sharp ZU1 , 12,000 BTU, strategically positioned high up in the central stairwell. The result: consistent comfort throughout the entire floor, reduced energy consumption, and a discreet system that complements the home's aesthetics.

Context: a typical Plateau duplex with a vertical staircase

The dwelling is a typical duplex in the Plateau-Mont-Royal area :

  • High ceilings and plaster walls.

  • Narrow stairwell connecting the entrance, living area and bedrooms.

  • Existing electric radiators are inefficient and energy-intensive.

The owners were looking for:

  1. A high-performance heating system for Montreal winters , capable of ensuring good comfort even during intense cold.

  2. Efficient air conditioning in summer , without having to multiply noisy window units.

  3. A discreet and silent solution that blends into the decor without cluttering the space.

The central stairwell proved to be the ideal location: hot or cool air circulates naturally there, allowing the heat pump to serve several rooms at once.

Choosing a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump

To meet this need, we opted for a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump operating on R-32 refrigerant :

  • High energy efficiency , ideal for reducing electricity bills.

  • Heating performance down to very low temperatures , suitable for the winters of the Plateau and the rest of Montreal.

  • Quiet operation , perfect for a narrow staircase where noise easily reverberates.

  • Minimalist, white and compact design , which blends well with the light walls of the stairwell.

This 12,000 BTU capacity is sufficient to effectively treat the air in the stairwell and provide comfortable air to the adjacent rooms: living room, kitchen and master bedrooms.

An elevated installation in the stairwell

The photo clearly shows the Sharp wall-mounted head installed very high , near the ceiling, above a vertical window. This type of installation requires careful planning.

1. Precise positioning of the wall-mounted head

We have installed the indoor unit:

  • In the upper part of the stairwell , to take advantage of air stratification: heat rises in winter, cool air descends in summer.

  • Above the window , to optimize available space and maintain the necessary clearances around the machine.

  • Slightly inclined for condensate management , so that the water flows properly towards the drain.

This positioning allows the heat pump to circulate air from several levels : the airflow follows the slope of the staircase, which quickly homogenizes the temperature.

2. Management of cabling, drain and refrigerant connections

Even though they are not visible in the photo, we have carefully planned:

  • The refrigeration lines (insulated copper) are routed behind the structure, so as not to visually clutter the stairwell.

  • A discreet cover where the ducts become visible, in order to maintain a clean and neat appearance.

  • The condensate drain is routed safely to prevent any water infiltration into the interior finish.

  • Electrical connection to a dedicated circuit breaker, in accordance with the Electrical Code and Sharp manufacturer requirements.

3. Working at height and safety

Installing a heat pump in a narrow stairwell requires specific logistics:

  • Use of ladders and platforms adapted to the space.

  • Protection of steps and walls to prevent damage.

  • Adherence to health and safety guidelines for our team and occupants.

We plan this type of project carefully to limit the impact on the daily lives of the occupants and to complete the work in a single day when there are no major complexities outside.

The outdoor condenser: performance and discretion

Outside, the Sharp condenser compatible with the ZU1 series was installed in an open location, chosen for:

  • Promote air circulation around the device.

  • Reduce the noise level noticeable inside and for the neighbors.

  • Allow sufficient clearance for snow and winter maintenance.

We installed the unit on a raised base to prevent snow accumulation, and took care to direct the air outlets away from passageways and windows.

Comfort, energy savings and stability in winter

Thanks to this Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump, homeowners now benefit from:

  • Stable heating even in very cold weather : no more need to overheat with electric baseboard heaters.

  • Gentle air conditioning in the summer , without excessive drafts or window compressor noise.

  • A significant reduction in electricity bills , as the heat pump consumes much less energy than purely resistive systems.

  • Improved vertical comfort : no more overly hot living rooms and overly cold bedrooms; the stairwell serves as a distribution column.

The Sharp heat pump also offers several modes (heating, cooling, dehumidifying, ventilation) as well as precise temperature control to within half a degree, allowing occupants to adjust comfort according to the seasons and their lifestyle.

An aesthetically pleasing and integrated installation

Visually, the interior unit blends into the architecture of the stairwell:

  • The white color of the heat pump matches the pale walls.

  • The plaster finishes and paint touch-ups were redone around the openings for a clean result.

  • Positioning it above the window frees up space in the stairwell and prevents accidental bumps into the unit.

This attention to detail is essential in a Plateau dwelling, where every centimeter counts and where interior aesthetics are part of the charm of the neighborhood.
