In Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, brick plexes with flat roofs are common… and their owners are increasingly looking for efficient solutions to cool their homes in the summer and heat them in the winter without skyrocketing their electricity bills. In this project, our AirGreen team installed a Sharp ECO Inverter wall-mounted heat pump on the flat roof of a typical residential building in the area.
Project context
The client wanted:
-
Replacing an aging air conditioning system with an energy-efficient solution.
-
Enjoy four-season comfort without cluttering the courtyard or balconies.
-
Minimize the visual impact of the outdoor unit on the front facade.
Given the building configuration (brick plex, flat roof with white membrane, dense urban environment), we recommended the installation of a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump , ECO Inverter model, with an outdoor unit installed directly on the roof.
Choosing the Sharp ECO Inverter wall-mounted heat pump
The Sharp range, well known for its Ion Plasmacluster technology and ECO Inverter compressors, is perfectly suited to the needs of Montreal homes:
-
Power suitable for a 4½ or 5½ type dwelling.
-
Inverter technology allows power to be continuously adjusted according to actual demand.
-
Excellent performance/electricity consumption ratio , ideal for reducing heating costs in mid-season and winter.
-
Quiet operation, both inside and out, which is crucial in a dense neighborhood like Rosemont.
In this project, we specifically opted for a single-zone wall configuration, perfect for treating the main living area while retaining the possibility of adding other complementary equipment in the future if needed.
Installation on a flat roof: challenges and best practices
Installing a heat pump on a flat membrane roof requires special attention. Our team follows a rigorous protocol to protect the building envelope and ensure the longevity of the equipment.
1. Elevated support and membrane protection
The Sharp outdoor unit is mounted on a raised aluminum bracket , itself placed on wooden feet resting on blue protective plates . This assembly allows for:
-
to distribute the load over the membrane;
-
to avoid any unnecessary drilling of the roof;
-
to facilitate the flow of rainwater and snowmelt;
-
to keep the condenser at a safe height relative to snow accumulation.
This type of installation is ideal for Montreal's flat roofs, which are often subject to significant temperature variations and freeze/thaw cycles.
2. Vibration and noise management
The support is designed to limit vibrations transmitted to the structure, which:
-
reduces the noise perceived inside ;
-
protects the membrane and roof against premature wear.
We pay particular attention to the tightening of the bolts, the level of the device and the clearances recommended by the manufacturer Sharp.
3. Routing of refrigerated lines
The refrigeration pipes and cables are bundled together in a black insulated sheath, visible in the photo, carefully fixed and laid flat on the membrane:
-
enhanced insulation to limit heat loss in winter;
-
careful attachment to avoid wear points and risks of friction with the roof;
-
Optimized layout to reduce line length and thus increase system efficiency .
Inside, the Sharp wall-mounted head is strategically positioned in the main living area to ensure even air distribution .
Performance in Montreal climate
Winters in Montreal and Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie are anything but mild. That's why we favour wall-mounted heat pumps designed for:
-
maintain good heating capacity at low temperatures ;
-
to offer intelligent defrosting to avoid performance losses;
-
continue to function effectively even in intense cold.
Sharp's ECO Inverter technology allows the compressor power to be modulated according to actual demand, resulting in:
-
reduced electricity consumption ;
-
a more stable indoor temperature (no more major heat or cold snaps);
-
extended component lifespan thanks to more gradual start-ups.
Aesthetics, discretion and maintenance
By installing the unit on the roof rather than on the facade or in the courtyard, we gain several advantages:
-
Visual discretion : from the street, the device is almost invisible, which respects the character of the brick buildings of Rosemont.
-
Space saving : no loss of floor space, ideal for small backyards or green alleyways.
-
Noise reduction for the neighborhood : sound dissipates more easily at higher altitudes.
Regarding maintenance, our team recommends:
-
an annual inspection of the outdoor unit (cleaning of the fins, checking of the fixings, checking of the membrane around the support area);
-
regular cleaning of the wall-mounted head filters inside;
-
periodic performance monitoring to ensure that the system maintains its optimal performance over the years.
A turnkey project by AirGreen
As with every installation, we took charge of the entire project:
-
Analysis of the thermal load of the dwelling.
-
Recommendation of the most suitable Sharp ECO Inverter wall-mounted heat pump .
-
Coordination with the client for access to the roof and accommodations.
-
Complete installation : raised support, refrigeration connections, power supply, pressure tests, commissioning.
-
Explanation to the customer of how the remote control works , the different modes and best practices to maximize savings.
The result: a comfortable home in summer and winter, a clean and safe installation on a flat roof, and a Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie client ready to fully enjoy their new Sharp wall-mounted heat pump.
