A Zephyr wall-mounted heat pump installed under the soffit: performance, silence and four-season protection
At AirGreen , we are currently working in the Le Sud-Ouest borough of Montreal, an area of plexes and flat-roofed buildings with unobstructed views of neighboring roofs. The project involves installing a Zephyr wall-mounted heat pump (recent R-32 range), with a condenser fixed on stainless steel brackets under the soffit and a short, direct cooling path. The objective: to deliver four-season comfort while preserving the aesthetics of the facade and the durability of the envelope.
Why a soffit installation makes a difference
Buildings in the Southwest combine climatic and urban constraints: gusts channeled through the alleys, accumulations of snow on the passageways, narrow passages for maintenance. Positioning the condenser under the soffit , on stainless steel wall brackets , has concrete advantages:
-
Natural protection against driving rain and ice, which reduces fin scaling and cleaning frequency.
-
Controlled noise : the facade absorbs some of the emissions and the height distances the unit from the living areas on the ground.
-
Snow clearance : the unit remains above the accumulation line, limiting the risk of obstruction of the vents.
-
Better stabilized performance in winter, because the air intakes are not drowned by gusts at ground level.
The Zephyr choice (R-32): energy efficiency and resistance to cold
Zephyr's R-32 range aims for a balance of performance and reliability adapted to our winters:
-
Inverter compressor finely modulate power to maintain a stable temperature without jolts.
-
R-32 refrigerant with low GWP compared to older generations, helping to reduce the environmental footprint.
-
Typical capacity range from 9,000 to 24,000 BTU, covering the majority of apartments and plex floors.
-
Careful acoustics both inside and out, ensuring peace and quiet for neighbors in densely populated areas.
Combined with a rigorous HVAC installation , this profile allows for energy savings compared to electric baseboards and achieves consistent comfort during the freeze/thaw periods specific to Montreal.
Key steps in installing AirGreen on a brick facade
1) Analysis of the support and tracing of the links
We validate the load-bearing capacity of the brick wall and the condition of the joints. The refrigeration connections are designed to be as short as possible up to the interior head, with a continuous slope for gravity drainage of condensate. The proximity of an electrical point is checked to avoid crossed paths.
2) Installation of brackets and anti-vibration management
The stainless steel wall brackets are mechanically anchored with wall plugs suitable for masonry. We insert blue anti-vibration pads under the condenser pads to dampen high frequencies and eliminate any hum that could be transmitted to the home.
3) Installation of the condenser under the soffit
The Zephyr condenser is precisely leveled to meet side and overhead clearances . The orientation ensures unobstructed airflow and prevents hot air from being recycled onto the façade. The soffit height protects the components from wind and blown snow.
4) Copper connections: UV insulation & waterproofing
The connections are sheathed with UV-resistant insulation , protected from exposed rays by butyl tape . The wall penetration is sleeved, sealed with elastomeric mastic to ensure air and water tightness . The bending radius of the tubes is respected to avoid any pressure loss.
5) Electrical connection and safety
A weatherproof outdoor disconnect box is installed within easy reach for maintenance. Grounding is verified, tightening is torqued, and a rain loop is formed before any conduit penetration.
6) Vacuuming, testing and configuration
We perform a deep vacuum and a leak test . The superheat/subcooling parameters are checked, then we perform an acoustic check and a vibration measurement . The calibration of the remote control (setpoints, speeds, modes) concludes the commissioning.

-
Fixing under soffit with stainless steel brackets : increased stability and climate protection.
-
Anti-vibration pads under the condenser feet for quiet operation.
-
Short refrigerated path exiting at the rear of the unit, continuous insulation and neat saddles .
-
Disconnect box installed nearby, discreet and easy to access.
-
Gravity management of condensates : controlled slope, no pump, therefore increased reliability .
This execution reduces energy losses, simplifies maintenance and preserves the aesthetics of the anthracite brick facade.
What the owner earns in Le Sud-Ouest
-
Four-season comfort : air conditioning in summer and heating in the mid-season, with efficient maintenance in cold weather.
-
Substantial energy savings compared to resistive systems.
-
Silence : the combination of soffit and anti-vibration elements provides a calm atmosphere, useful in dense urban areas.
-
Durability : protection against bad weather and ice, limited corrosion thanks to the installation materials.
-
Clear facade : no slab on the ground, no encroachment on the courtyard or the alley.
AirGreen Best Practices for Northeast Montreal Facades
-
Clearances : strictly respect the distances around the unit to prevent air recycling .
-
Snow and frost : Check the accumulation line and keep the space under the unit clear.
-
Drainage : check at the end of autumn that condensate flows freely .
-
UV protection : monitor the condition of the sleeves and touch up the butyl tape if necessary.
-
Maintenance : schedule an annual service (fin cleaning, pressures, tightening, defrost test).
HVAC maintenance: our annual protocol
-
Cleaning of coils and filters, straightening of fins if necessary.
-
Checking pressures , visual inspection of soldering and fittings.
-
Electrical test : tightening, insulation, earth continuity.
-
Mechanical inspection : condition of brackets , buffers and stainless steel screws.
-
Winter defrosting test and flow control.
-
Update of user settings (eco settings, timers).
This protocol maintains seasonal performance and extends compressor life .
Grants and Eligibility: What You Need to Know
Depending on the capacity chosen, seasonal efficiency and current criteria , recent wall-mounted heat pumps may be eligible for incentives in Greater Montreal (programs subject to change). We support our customers in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil , as well as the North Shore and South Shore , to validate model compliance and prepare the necessary supporting documents .
