Precise comfort, minimalist installation and air diffusion designed for Montreal apartments

Housing context and objectives

In an apartment in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension , we modernized the interior comfort with a recent generation Zephyr wall -mounted heat pump with R-32 (A2L) . The client's expectations were clear: economical heating in spring and fall, stable air conditioning during heat waves, all without distorting the refined aesthetic of the living room. We chose a centered installation at the top of the wall , providing a uniform sweep across the entire room and excellent air intake.

Why a Zephyr R-32 heat pump here?

  • Efficiency in cold climates : inverter compressor and heat exchanger optimized to maintain good capacity when the temperature drops below zero, typical of Greater Montreal .

  • R-32 (A2L) : better volumetric performance and lower GWP than R-410A.

  • Quiet operation : modulated fan speeds, ideal for an open-plan living room.

  • Aesthetics : smooth casing, discreet instruction display on the front and regular air curtain thanks to the profiled shutters.

  • Simplified maintenance : washable filters accessible from the front, clear diagnostics via the electronic card.

Target capacity : According to the load calculation, the treated area generally corresponds to 12–15 kBTU in this apartment format, subject to insulation and openness to adjacent rooms.

Key steps in HVAC installation

1) Thermal analysis and choice of location

At AirGreen, we start with a load calculation (envelope, volume, orientation, infiltration, glazing). The chosen location:

  • maximizes sweep along the main wall and avoids direct blowing onto the sofa or table;

  • respects the top and side clearances to ensure accurate measurement of the probes and easy access to the filters;

  • prepares a short crossing to the outside, a guarantee of efficiency and reliability.

2) Drilling and refrigeration connections

  • Wall crossing with sheath, vapor barrier and controlled slope;

  • Insulated copper lines in pairs, anti-vibration mounting and compliant bending radii ;

  • Discreet interior capping flush with the bottom of the unit for a clean finish;

  • On the outside, a white UV-resistant trunking that follows the facade up to the condenser.

The path is deliberately short and straight (typically 5 to 7 m to the yard), which reduces pressure losses and keeps the compressor in its best efficiency zone.

3) Condensate management

We prefer a gravity drain with a continuous slope towards the outside. Advantages:

  • no pump noise;

  • minimal maintenance;

  • almost zero risk of overflow if seasonal maintenance is respected.
    When gravity is not possible (length or obstacles), we integrate a silent micro-pump with anti-overflow contact . Here, the favorable wall configuration allowed us to maintain a reliable gravity flow .

4) Installation of the outdoor unit

On the courtyard side, we install the unit on raised galvanized wall brackets :

  • ground clearance for snow;

  • free air circulation at the rear and sides;

  • easy access for defrosting and maintenance;

  • if necessary, snow guard and awning without hindering recovery/insufflation.

5) Instrumented commissioning

Our protocol includes:

  1. Flares made to the manufacturer's torque , visual inspection of the lips;

  2. Nitrogen test (controlled pressure), then deep vacuum < 500 microns and stabilization;

  3. Leakage control and evaporation/condensation temperature readings;

  4. Setting of the setpoint , speeds, automatic scanning and silent night modes;

  5. Checking the currents and electrical polarity on a dedicated circuit breaker.

Results observed: comfort and savings

Low-energy supplementary heating

In mid-season and during moderate cold weather, the heat pump provides an excellent energy consumed/heat delivered ratio ( COP often > 2 in actual use), which reduces the use of baseboards and stabilizes bills .

Uniform air conditioning

The horizontal sweep covers the width of the living room while the air intake at the top of the wall limits stratification . The result: fewer hot spots and a uniform feeling of freshness, even during the humid episodes of July and August in Montreal .

Discretion and aesthetics

The centered installation and slim chute blend into the decor. The front display allows immediate reading of the instruction , practical without having to have a remote control within reach.

Technical details that matter

Refrigerant R-32 (A2L)

  • Increased performance through better volumetric capacity;

  • Reduced GWP compared to R-410A;

  • Compliance with A2L good practices (ventilation, tightening torques, absence of ignition sources during commissioning).

Electricity and protections

  • Dedicated circuit according to nameplate, with external circuit breaker;

  • Grounding verified, strain relief clips and clean routing to the panel;

  • Overcurrent management using a suitable circuit breaker.

Acoustic

  • Programmable silent mode;

  • Silent-blocks on the external supports;

  • Condenser orientation to minimize sound reflection to neighbors.

HVAC maintenance: the recipe for longevity

User Routine

  • Clean the filters every 4 to 8 weeks during periods of use;

  • Ensure that the drain remains free (no obstruction at the wall pass-through);

  • Clear snow and objects around the condenser in winter.

Annual AirGreen Visit

  • Thorough cleaning of the evaporator and condenser ;

  • Checking the refrigeration parameters and the drain pump/drawing if present;

  • Updated comfort settings and checked connection insulation .

Simple but regular maintenance preserves performance , lifespan and warranties .

Grants and eligibilities (benchmarks)

High-performance R-32 wall-mounted heat pumps that maintain their capacity in extreme cold may be eligible for assistance programs in Quebec. Eligibility depends on the exact model and certified performance. We support our clients in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore to validate criteria and prepare applications.

AirGreen Tips for Optimal Results

1) Choose the right wall

A central wall that "sees" the entire living room prevents dead zones. Avoid blowing directly into a narrow hallway or a curtain.

2) Minimize the length of the bonds

A short path and few bends promote efficiency and reliability (less losses, less vibration).

3) Treat the drain

The slope must be continuous; in the absence of gravity, provide a silent micro-pump with safety.

4) Anticipate winter

Provide clearance around the condenser, adequate raising and snow protection if roof runoff may create snow drifts.

Frequently asked questions

  • Type : Zephyr wall-mounted heat pump (recent R-32 range)

    What we check on a job like this one

    Each number is a point we check on site. Switch between summer and winter to watch air and heat move.

    Generic diagram: wall-mounted heat pump, indoor and outdoor units

    In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.

    1. Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.

    2. The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.

    3. Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.

    4. A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.

    5. The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.

    6. On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.

    7. The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.

    Frequently asked questions

    What people ask us about this kind of work

    12 questions
    Does a wall-mounted heat pump heat in winter?
    Yes, it heats and cools. Its capacity drops in very cold weather; the operating range depends on the model and is listed on its spec sheet.
    Wall-mounted or multi-zone: how do I choose?
    One wall head and one condenser outside: the direct solution for a room or an open area. For two to five rooms, a multi-zone puts one head in each room on a single condenser.
    Where does the outdoor unit go?
    Where it stays above the snow, clear and accessible, away from walkways. We decide it with you during the estimate.
    Are there grants?
    Depending on the model and your situation, assistance programs may apply, including Hydro-Québec's LogisVert. AirGreen checks the model number before quoting an amount. See the grants.
    Do I need a permit?
    Rules vary from city to city: location, distances, noise. See permits and by-laws, and we check for your address.
    How cold can it heat?
    It depends on the model. According to Hydro-Québec, newer models work down to a temperature between −15 °C and −25 °C, and some cold-climate models are certified lower. The minimum temperature is on each unit's spec sheet.
    How much can I save?
    Hydro-Québec says a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months. The result depends on the house, the climate and how it is used.
    How is the LogisVert assistance calculated?
    For ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified heat pumps, Hydro-Québec lists assistance of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heating capacity at −8 °C. AirGreen checks the exact model before quoting an amount; only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted. See the grants.
    Is it noisy?
    The sound level depends on the model and is listed in decibels on each unit's spec sheet. Location matters too: when possible, we avoid putting the outdoor unit under a bedroom window.
    The outdoor unit is covered in ice: is that normal?
    Some frost is: the unit runs defrost cycles. Never hit the ice. If the unit stays iced up or stops heating, call us.
    Does AirGreen hold the required licences?
    Yes. AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subclasses 15.8 Ventilation, 15.10 Refrigeration and 16 Electricity.
    Is the estimate free?
    Yes. The on-site estimate is free and the quote follows within 24 hours. Book my free estimate.
