Installation of a Zephyr wall-mounted heat pump in Plateau-Mont-Royal

The ideal solution for a brick plex: 4-season comfort, preserved aesthetics and controlled noise

At AirGreen , we work weekly in plexes in the Plateau-Mont-Royal region , where the combination of brick facades , spiral staircases , and narrow courtyards requires a custom HVAC installation . Here, we installed a Zephyr wall-mounted heat pump for a unit located on the 2nd floor of a triplex. The client's objectives: improve summer comfort, reduce electric heating costs in the winter, and preserve the aesthetics of the already heavily used backyard.

The Zephyr equipment chosen offers excellent value for money, an operating range adapted to our winters and discreet operation. The outdoor unit is installed at the rear terrace, under a window, and the refrigeration connection descends into a discreet vertical capping , perfectly aligned with the brick joints. The disconnect switch has been positioned within easy reach for maintenance, in accordance with the Quebec Electrical Code .

Thermal context and capacity choice

The home features an open-plan living-dining room, southwest exposure, with afternoon solar gains. After our simplified load calculations (surface area, orientation, insulation, infiltration), we recommended a capacity of approximately 12,000 BTUs to cover the main space while providing a margin for July's heat peaks. On the heating side, the Zephyr heat pump 's performance curve ensures useful power in cold weather, which lowers the consumption of electric baseboard heaters.

Installation Steps and Decisions

1) Condenser installation: stability, clearances and circulation

The backyard is narrow and crossed by a spiral staircase . To maintain the passage and ensure maintenance, we have:

  • placed the condenser on a rigid platform at the level of the decking, with anti-vibration pads ;

  • respected the required clearances around the blower grille for good air circulation;

  • oriented the unit so that the airflow does not target the terrace or the windows, limiting recirculation and perceived noise.

The placement also protects the equipment from falling ice from the metal stairs in winter. Vertical clearance has been provided to facilitate snow removal.

2) Refrigeration route: clean drilling and flush capping

In a brick plex, the quality of the drilling makes the difference. We have:

  • drilled a slightly sloping passage towards the outside to avoid any water retention;

  • inserted a sleeve and sealed around it to ensure airtightness;

  • grouped refrigeration piping , communication cable and drain in a discreet, vertical black capping , which blends in with the existing elements (gutter/wiring), minimizing the visual impact on the brick.

The total length of the lines is optimized to remain within the range recommended by Zephyr, preserving the efficiency and output of the machine.

3) Power supply and safety

The disconnect box was fixed directly to the brickwork at a convenient working height. We used approved outdoor wiring and anchors suitable for masonry. Everything is grounded in accordance with the requirements. This proximity reduces cable length and simplifies future maintenance.

4) Condensate management: priority to gravity

Drainage is carried out by gravity , which avoids the installation of a condensate pump (source of noise and maintenance). The pipe follows the fall of the capping, with a continuous slope and a discreet outlet to the outside. A non-return valve prevents any air infiltration.

5) Vibrations and acoustics: neighborhood comfort above all

The Plateau's inner courtyards easily reverberate sound. So we have:

  • placed the condenser on anti-vibration pads ;

  • used a flexible hose on the drain to limit structural transmission;

  • activated the silent mode available on the outdoor unit during hot night periods, reducing the fan rotation speed.

Result: very low perceived noise from the courtyard side, appreciated by the immediate neighbors.

What the Zephyr brings to everyday life

  • 4-season comfort : efficient air conditioning in summer and efficient heating in the off-season and in winter (down to low temperatures depending on the Zephyr series installed).

  • Energy Efficiency : Competitive SEER/HSPF ratios , which reduce the overall bill compared to baseboard heaters alone.

  • Fine regulation : inverter technology modulates power, avoids short cycles and stabilizes temperature.

  • Silence : the indoor unit blows gently; the outdoor unit remains acoustically contained thanks to the installation and the pads.

  • Simplified maintenance : easy access to the condenser, removable capping, washable filters on the interior head.

Grants and Eligibility

Depending on the Zephyr range chosen and its low-temperature performance , the installation may be eligible for current assistance programs . We assist owners in preparing the file (proof of purchase, photos, serial numbers, energy performance), in order to optimize reimbursement. Our team knows how to align the equipment with the criteria (seasonal efficiency, cold operation, certification).

Special features of a Plateau-Mont-Royal construction site: our best practices

Respect for masonry

  • Limited and aligned drilling; sealing with brick-compatible elastomeric mastic .

  • Mechanical fasteners sized to prevent any bursting of the joints.

  • Capping chosen in a dark shade to visually blend with existing elements.

Access and logistics

  • Transport of materials by the spiral staircase , planned outside of peak hours in the courtyard.

  • Protection of the wooden decking and steps during the passage of the unit and tools.

  • Minimal downtime for occupants; same-day testing and commissioning.

Quebec winter: anticipation

  • Sufficient height to prevent snow accumulation around the condenser.

  • Check the defrost water drain to prevent ice from forming near the terrace.

  • Instructions for use: clear snow around the unit, do not obstruct the air intake.

Result: neat aesthetics, immediate comfort and savings to boot

The final result is refined : the Zephyr condenser blends into the bottom of the wall, the vertical capping draws a clean line up to the interior header, and the switch remains discreet but accessible. From the moment it is switched on, occupants enjoy a consistent cool breeze in air conditioning mode; in winter, the heat pump takes over from the baseboards and reduces consumption.

Our final checks include:

  • Nitrogen leak test followed by deep vacuum ;

  • Weighing/adjusting refrigerant if required by line length;

  • Checking the intensities , the blowing temperature and the superheat/subcooling ;

  • Maintenance instructions (filter cleaning, annual maintenance interval).

AirGreen tips for brick plexes (to keep)

  1. Choose the right location for the condenser: away from passageways and neighbors' windows; choose a clear wall.

  2. Prefer gravity for the drain; only install a pump if the slope is impossible.

  3. Take care with the capping : straight, without unnecessary breaks; color consistent with the elements of the wall.

  4. Anticipate winter : plan snow clearance and de-icing water paths.

  5. Plan the electrical : visible and accessible disconnection, circuit breaker rating in accordance with the nameplate.
