Installation of two Gree wall-mounted heat pumps in Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve

In this typical brick duplex in Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve , the owners wanted to make each unit comfortable year-round… without altering the already well-used backyard, complete with a deck and above-ground pool. Our AirGreen team therefore installed two Gree wall-mounted heat pumps , one for each unit, optimizing both energy efficiency and space utilization.

A backyard with a swimming pool and a brick facade

The red brick rear facade, metal balconies, and above-ground pool create a setting very representative of Montreal plexes. The constraints were clear:

  • limited floor space due to the swimming pool;

  • need to maintain good circulation around the pelvis;

  • obligation to respect electrical and mechanical safety clearances;

  • The client wished to have a clean, aligned and discreet installation on the brick wall.

We chose to install the Gree outdoor units directly on the facade, on robust and raised metal supports, in order to keep them clear of snow in winter and pool splashes in summer.

Two Gree wall-mounted heat pumps, one per dwelling

Each unit is served by its own Gree wall-mounted heat pump (single-zone mini-split system), which allows for:

  • independent temperature control for each family;

  • a better distribution of electricity costs;

  • great flexibility of use according to lifestyle habits.

We opted for capacities around 12,000 BTU per unit, an ideal size for typical medium-sized apartments in this area. The Gree wall-mounted heat pumps in this range offer:

  • a very efficient inverter compressor , which modulates its power rather than running at full speed and then stopping;

  • efficient heating even in cold weather, which is essential in Montreal's climate;

  • a quiet air conditioning mode, appreciated in bedrooms and living rooms overlooking the courtyard.

Discreet wiring and cable trays that match the brickwork

In the photo, you can see a long horizontal conduit running through the brick facade. It houses the refrigeration lines and part of the wiring for both systems. We ran it at a uniform level, below the windows, in order to:

  • minimize visual impact;

  • to facilitate possible future interventions;

  • protect the pipes from mechanical impacts and weathering.

The vertical downpipes to the outdoor units are also channeled and then neatly connected to the rear of each Gree condenser. The result: a technical installation that remains tidy and consistent with the existing architecture.

Respecting clearances around the above-ground pool

Installing two outdoor heat pumps near a swimming pool requires special attention:

  • respect safety clearances in relation to water and electrical equipment;

  • position the units high enough to limit the risk of repeated splashing;

  • ensure good air circulation around each condenser to avoid hot air recirculation in air conditioning mode.

We therefore placed the two Gree units on wall brackets at the correct height, spacing them sufficiently apart from each other and from the pool. Each condenser has ample clearance at the front and sides, ensuring optimal performance and increased compressor lifespan.

Four-season performance for every apartment

Thanks to these two Gree wall-mounted heat pumps, the occupants now benefit from:

  • efficient air conditioning in summer, even during heat waves, without resorting to noisy window units;

  • economical heating in spring, autumn and a good part of winter, greatly reducing the use of electric baseboard heaters;

  • precise temperature control in each dwelling, via remote control and programmable modes.

Gree heat pumps are designed to withstand Quebec winters: protected compressor housing, automatic defrosting, and intelligent outdoor fan speed control. Homeowners thus benefit from a profitable investment that lowers energy bills while increasing comfort and the value of their property.

A clean, planned and coordinated construction site

As with all our projects, we have:

  • planned the installation according to the availability of the occupants and the neighborhood;

  • protected the swimming pool and terrace during the works;

  • drilled holes in the walls in a targeted way to limit repairs;

  • tested each Gree system in heating and air conditioning modes before leaving the construction site.

We finally took the time to explain to the occupants the best practices: regular cleaning of the filters of the wall units, clearing of the outdoor units in winter, and modes to favor to maximize savings.
