  1. Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.

  2. The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.

  3. Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.

  4. A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.

  5. The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.

  6. On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.

  7. The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.

Bringing Comfort and Efficiency to the North Shore: A Gree Sapphire Installation Success Story

At AirGreen, we pride ourselves on delivering HVAC solutions that offer both reliability and cutting-edge technology, ensuring that our customers enjoy optimal comfort all year round. Our recent project in the North Shore (Rive Nord) of Quebec showcases the Gree Sapphire 12,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump, a unit that combines sleek design, superior performance, and eco-friendliness. Let’s take a deeper dive into the installation process and the unique aspects of this particular job.

The Homeowner's Challenge

Our client, a North Shore resident, had been searching for an energy-efficient solution that could handle Quebec’s harsh winters and humid summers without compromising on style or functionality. They needed a system capable of maintaining comfort even during the bitter cold spells common in this region, where temperatures often plummet well below freezing. Moreover, the homeowner was keen to take advantage of the Hydro-Québec LogisVert Grant program, which offers a rebate of $972 for eligible energy-efficient systems.

After consulting with us, they chose the Gree Sapphire 12,000 BTU heat pump, renowned for its ultra-efficient heating capacity down to -30°C and cooling performance that’s more than capable of keeping things comfortable during the summer. This choice was ideal for their three-bedroom home, where both temperature control and energy savings were priorities.

Why the Gree Sapphire? The Best of Both Worlds

The Gree Sapphire series stands out in the market for its remarkable efficiency, both in heating and cooling modes. With a cooling capacity of 12,000 BTU and the ability to keep heating when temperatures drop as low as -30°C, this heat pump offers versatility that few other models can match. Not only does it ensure cozy warmth during the harshest winters, but it also provides efficient cooling during Quebec’s humid summer months, all while maintaining low energy consumption.

Moreover, the system’s quiet operation—22 to 49 dB(A) for the interior unit—makes it perfect for homeowners who value peace and quiet. It’s no surprise that this model has earned an Energy Star® certification and boasts a 30.5 SEER efficiency rating, one of the highest available in the market today.

Seamless Installation Process

Our installation process for this project was both swift and meticulous. The Gree Sapphire heat pump was mounted on the exterior wall, and the unit’s sleek design allowed it to blend seamlessly with the homeowner's property. Thanks to the compact dimensions of the exterior unit (35.41 x 14.88 x 23.5), we were able to install it without intruding on their outdoor space.

To ensure optimal performance, we also installed 1/4" and 1/2" copper piping for the refrigerant lines, adhering to the manufacturer's specifications. The system is powered by a 220V connection, which was already compatible with the home’s electrical infrastructure, making the installation smooth and cost-efficient for the client.

We also ran the necessary electrical wiring and ensured that all connections were properly sealed to prevent any potential leakage. To further protect the outdoor unit, we mounted it on a raised platform, shielding it from water and debris accumulation, which can occur during Quebec’s heavy snowfall in winter.

Tackling Quebec’s Harsh Winters

One of the most impressive features of the Gree Sapphire heat pump is its ability to operate efficiently even in freezing conditions. This model can continue heating in temperatures as low as -30°C, making it perfect for North Shore homeowners who need a reliable source of warmth during the long, cold winters. The heat pump’s smart defrost feature ensures that the unit remains free from frost buildup, while its preheating mode eliminates any delay in heating when the system is activated.

Advanced Control Features

The Gree Sapphire heat pump also comes equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing the homeowner to control their system remotely via the GREE+ app. This feature adds convenience, enabling users to adjust settings from anywhere, ensuring that their home is always at the perfect temperature when they return. Additionally, the system’s multi-speed fan and precise airflow control ensure that every corner of the home is comfortable, whether it’s during a summer heatwave or a winter cold snap.

Maximizing Energy Efficiency

With an efficiency rating of up to 30.5 SEER in cooling mode and 15 HSPF in heating mode, the Gree Sapphire is among the most energy-efficient heat pumps available on the market. This allows homeowners to reduce their energy bills while enjoying year-round comfort. The system's low voltage start feature further reduces electricity usage, while the smart defrost function ensures that the system runs as efficiently as possible, even during the coldest days of winter.

By choosing the Gree Sapphire, our client also became eligible for a $972 Hydro-Québec LogisVert Grant, which significantly reduced the upfront cost of the system. At AirGreen, we always ensure our customers are fully informed about any available rebates and grants, helping them make the most financially advantageous decision for their home.

Long-Term Benefits and Peace of Mind

For long-term peace of mind, the Gree Sapphire comes with a 12-year warranty on the compressor and parts, ensuring that the client is covered in the unlikely event of any issues. While labor is not included in the base warranty, we offer an extended 10-10-10 warranty, covering 10 years for parts, labor, and the compressor. This additional warranty provides full protection, and we highly recommend it for homeowners looking to avoid unexpected expenses in the future.

Additionally, we conducted a thorough test of the system post-installation to ensure everything was working correctly. The homeowner was given a comprehensive walk-through on how to operate the system using both the remote control and the mobile app, ensuring that they feel confident in using their new heat pump to its fullest potential.

    Frequently asked questions

What people ask us about this kind of work

    12 questions
Does a wall-mounted heat pump heat in winter?
Yes, it heats and cools. Its capacity drops in very cold weather; the operating range depends on the model and is listed on its spec sheet.
    Wall-mounted or multi-zone: how do I choose?
One wall head and one condenser outside: the direct solution for a room or an open area. For two to five rooms, a multi-zone puts one head in each room on a single condenser.
Where does the outdoor unit go?
Where it stays above the snow, clear and accessible, away from walkways. We decide it with you during the estimate.
    Are there grants?
Depending on the model and your situation, assistance programs may apply, including Hydro-Québec's LogisVert. AirGreen checks the model number before quoting an amount. See the grants.
    Do I need a permit?
Rules vary from city to city: location, distances, noise. See permits and by-laws, and we check for your address.
    How cold can it heat?
It depends on the model. According to Hydro-Québec, newer models work down to a temperature between −15 °C and −25 °C, and some cold-climate models are certified lower. The minimum temperature is on each unit's spec sheet.
    How much can I save?
Hydro-Québec says a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months. The result depends on the house, the climate and how it is used.
How is the LogisVert assistance calculated?
For ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified heat pumps, Hydro-Québec lists assistance of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heating capacity at −8 °C. AirGreen checks the exact model before quoting an amount; only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted. See the grants.
    Is it noisy?
The sound level depends on the model and is listed in decibels on each unit's spec sheet. Location matters too: when possible, we avoid putting the outdoor unit under a bedroom window.
The outdoor unit is covered in ice: is that normal?
Some frost is: the unit runs defrost cycles. Never hit the ice. If the unit stays iced up or stops heating, call us.
Does AirGreen hold the required licences?
Yes. AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subclasses 15.8 Ventilation, 15.10 Refrigeration and 16 Electricity.
    Is the estimate free?
Yes. The on-site estimate is free and the quote follows within 24 hours. Book my free estimate.
