Generic diagram: wall-mounted heat pump, indoor and outdoor units

In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.

  1. Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.

  2. The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.

  3. Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.

  4. A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.

  5. The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.

  6. On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.

  7. The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.

Breathing New Life into a Trusted Machine: The Story of a Carrier Mini Split

At AirGreen, we pride ourselves on being the go-to HVAC specialists in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore. Recently, we were called to a home in Brossard to tackle a repair that perfectly illustrates our commitment to quality, expertise, and customer satisfaction.

Our customer, a long-time owner of a Carrier wall-mounted heat pump, had started noticing issues with their unit. The once reliable machine had been struggling to turn on, leaving the family in discomfort as temperatures fluctuated. Despite its age, the customer was attached to the unit, having relied on it for years to keep their home comfortable year-round. The task was clear: extend the life of this trusted companion and restore it to its former glory.

The Challenge: Diagnosing the Problem

When we arrived, the heat pump was unresponsive. Our skilled technicians conducted a thorough inspection to identify the root cause. Here’s what we found:

  • Electrical glitches: The heat pump wasn’t receiving consistent power due to a worn-out capacitor. This small yet crucial component often fails with age, causing the unit to lose its ability to start.
  • Dust and debris accumulation: Over the years, the system's internal components had gathered a significant amount of debris, reducing its efficiency and causing minor overheating.
  • Wear and tear on the blower motor: The motor that circulates air throughout the home was running intermittently, leading to uneven temperatures.

With a clear diagnosis in hand, we got to work.

Our Process: Restoring the Carrier Mini Split

We believe in transparency and craftsmanship. Here’s how we tackled the repair:

  1. Replacing the capacitor: This tiny yet essential part was swiftly swapped out, ensuring the heat pump could reliably power up.
  2. Deep cleaning of internal components: Using professional-grade equipment, we meticulously cleaned the evaporator coils, fan blades, and filters to improve airflow and system efficiency.
  3. Blower motor adjustment: Rather than replacing the motor outright, we fine-tuned its settings and lubricated the bearings, saving the customer unnecessary costs while ensuring smooth operation.

The Result: Like-New Performance

After a few hours of work, the Carrier wall-mounted heat pump was humming like it was brand new. The once-problematic system now:

  • Heats and cools efficiently, providing consistent temperatures throughout the home.
  • Operates quietly, enhancing the family’s comfort without the distracting noise of a struggling unit.
  • Offers peace of mind, with a few additional years of reliable service ahead.

Our customer was thrilled with the outcome. Instead of replacing their beloved Carrier system, they now have a machine that’s ready to handle the seasonal demands of Quebec’s climate.

Why Choose Repair Over Replacement?

Repairing an existing heat pump can be a smart decision, especially when:

  • The unit is well-built. Carrier machines are known for their durability, making them excellent candidates for repair.
  • Repairs are cost-effective. In this case, the customer spent a fraction of the cost of a new installation while extending the unit’s lifespan.
  • Environmental impact matters. Repairing instead of replacing reduces waste, contributing to a greener planet.

Through the seasons

What to do, season by season

Three habits per season for this unit. They take a few minutes and prevent many calls.

  • Clean the indoor unit's filters.
  • Clear leaves and debris left on the outdoor unit by winter.
  • Test cooling before the first hot days.
True or false

Four statements: true or false?

It all comes down to details you have just seen.

1. In heating mode, the outdoor unit can produce water.

2. You pick the capacity with a simple square-footage rule.

3. A multi-zone connects several indoor heads to a single condenser.

4. The disconnect can sit behind the patio furniture.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us about this kind of work

9 questions
What should I have ready before calling?
The model (on the unit's label), the error code if there is one, the symptoms and how long they have lasted.
Repair or replace?
It depends on the unit's age, the failure and the cost of parts. We present the options after the diagnosis.
Does a wall-mounted heat pump heat in winter?
Yes, it heats and cools. Its capacity drops in very cold weather; the operating range depends on the model and is listed on its spec sheet.
Wall-mounted or multi-zone: how do I choose?
One wall head and one condenser outside: the direct solution for a room or an open area. For two to five rooms, a multi-zone puts one head in each room on a single condenser.
Where does the outdoor unit go?
Where it stays above the snow, clear and accessible, away from walkways. We decide it with you during the estimate.
Are there grants?
Depending on the model and your situation, assistance programs may apply, including Hydro-Québec's LogisVert. AirGreen checks the model number before quoting an amount. See the grants.
Do I need a permit?
Rules vary from city to city: location, distances, noise. See permits and by-laws, and we check for your address.
Does AirGreen hold the required licences?
Yes. AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subclasses 15.8 Ventilation, 15.10 Refrigeration and 16 Electricity.
Is the estimate free?
Yes. The on-site estimate is free and the quote follows within 24 hours. Book my free estimate.
