Restoring life and efficiency to a neglected heat pump
During our recent intervention in Lachine , on the Island of Montreal, our AirGreen team was called in to perform a complete cleaning of a Samsung Smart Inverter outdoor unit . Installed on a balcony exposed to the elements, this heat pump showed clear signs of fouling: dust accumulated on the cover, partially obstructed fins, and reduced heating performance.
The customer had noticed that his appliance was making more noise than usual and seemed less efficient in cold weather — classic symptoms of a dirty condenser .
Initial diagnosis: a unit suffocated by dust and debris
Several observations became immediately apparent upon visual inspection:
-
A thick layer of dust and soot on top of the device;
-
Obstructed heat exchange fins , limiting air circulation;
-
Plant debris stuck at the base of the fan , originating from a nearby dried-out shrub;
-
Slight surface corrosion due to persistent humidity.
These build-ups severely impaired compressor performance, causing overheating and excessive energy consumption. Without maintenance, this type of fouling can reduce energy efficiency by more than 20% and accelerate component wear.
Steps in the complete cleaning process by AirGreen
1. Preparation and securing
Before any handling, the appliance was unplugged and secured . We then protected the refrigeration connections and electrical wiring with waterproof sheathing to prevent any water infiltration during cleaning.
2. Cleaning the hood and the fan
The top cover was removed for a complete dusting of the fan .
Using an anti-static brush and a microfiber cloth, we removed the layer of stuck-on dust, then applied a neutral biodegradable cleaner to dissolve the greasy residue.
3. Washing the condenser fins
We sprayed an environmentally friendly, pH-neutral degreasing product designed for aluminum coils, followed by a low-pressure water jet rinse.
This method allows impurities to be removed without risking damage to the fins. Particular attention was paid to the lower area of the condenser, often neglected, where deposits are most stubborn.
4. Cleaning the condensation basin and checking the drain
The retention basin was emptied and rinsed. We then checked the free flow of the condensation drain , essential to prevent water stagnation and winter frost problems.
5. Application of a protective treatment
To extend the durability of the condenser, we have applied a thin layer of anti-corrosion protector to the metal surfaces.
This treatment reduces dirt adhesion and delays oxidation caused by salt air and urban pollution.
Results: restored efficiency and quiet operation
Once the unit was reassembled and put back into service, the improvements were immediate:
-
The airflow has been restored to 100%;
-
The operating noise level has decreased significantly;
-
Energy efficiency has increased, providing faster and more even heating.
The customer noticed a significant difference the very next morning: his system was no longer running continuously to reach the desired temperature.
Why outdoor unit cleaning is essential
Many users forget that the outdoor unit is the heart of the HVAC system . Exposed to rain, wind and dust, it suffers the worst environmental conditions.
A simple annual cleaning can:
-
Improve energy efficiency by 10 to 30%;
-
Reduce the risk of major breakdowns (compressor, fan, electronic board);
-
Extend the lifespan of the device ;
-
And above all, to ensure consistent comfort in all seasons.
The AirGreen approach: rigor, respect and sustainability
At AirGreen, we don't just do a simple "exterior wash." Each service follows a rigorous technical protocol , including:
-
Mechanical and electrical inspection;
-
Gentle and safe cleaning adapted to each brand;
-
Certified biodegradable products;
-
Performance checks after intervention.
Our goal: to restore the original efficiency of each device, while guaranteeing its longevity. We operate in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and the South Shore , always with the same high standards of quality and precision.
Preventive maintenance: long-term savings
Regular maintenance of a heat pump is not an expense, but an investment in durability .
A clean appliance consumes less, heats better, and retains its performance even after several harsh Quebec winters.
AirGreen offers customized preventative maintenance packages based on equipment type and frequency of use, ensuring peace of mind and comfort all year round.
