Case Study: 45% Heating Savings with a Multi-Zone Heat Pump in a Duplex in Laval

A Strategic HVAC Installation in a Duplex

In this article, we present an installation of a multi-zone heat pump carried out by our AirGreen team in a duplex located in the heart of Laval. This project perfectly illustrates how a well-thought-out HVAC solution not only improves indoor comfort but also leads to a significant reduction in energy costs, here achieving a 45% heating savings. Thanks to our expertise, careful planning, and the use of highly efficient HVAC technologies, we transformed a property with high energy consumption into a model of efficiency.

Project Profile: Duplex in Laval with Dual Occupancy

The targeted duplex had two living units, each located on a separate floor. The building, constructed in the 1980s, was initially heated with an oil-based system combined with electric convectors, which were costly and inefficient. The occupants were looking for a centralized heating and cooling system, capable of managing multiple zones, while optimizing costs and energy consumption.

It was in this context that we recommended and installed a Gree Multi 36,000 BTU multi-zone heat pump, equipped with three indoor wall units – two 12,000 BTU units and one 9,000 BTU unit – to ensure uniform comfort in both living spaces.

Why a Multi-Zone Heat Pump?

An Ideal Solution for Multi-Unit Properties

Multi-zone heat pumps are designed to serve multiple rooms or residential units from a single outdoor compressor. In this duplex project, this technology allowed for:

  • Individual temperature control in the different living spaces

  • Minimized visible exterior units (one compressor for the entire system)

  • A significant reduction in energy costs

  • Simplified maintenance and service

Technical Details of the Installed Equipment

  • Brand: Gree

  • Outdoor Unit Model: Gree Multi 36,000 BTU – Free Match Series

  • Indoor Units:

    • 2 x 12,000 BTU wall-mounted units

    • 1 x 9,000 BTU wall-mounted unit

  • Refrigerant: R-32 with a low global warming potential

  • SEER: 21 | HSPF: 10.5

  • Eligibility for Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert program: Yes

    • Total subsidies received: $3,408

Key Steps in the Laval Installation

Thermal Analysis and Needs Assessment

Before any work began, our team conducted a detailed energy assessment of both units in the duplex. This step allowed us to evaluate the thermal load of each room, the energy loss due to insulation and windows, as well as the occupants’ consumption habits.

This assessment revealed areas of summer overheating on the second floor, and significant heat loss on the ground floor. The multi-zone configuration emerged as the optimal solution to address these discrepancies.

Specific Challenges Faced on Site

  • Restricted access for the outdoor unit: Located at the rear of the duplex with a narrow passage, the installation required the use of anti-vibration wall brackets and careful routing of the wiring.

  • Differentiation of indoor units: Each floor had different interior finishes, so we opted for sleek, understated design, with white, discreet wall-mounted units and hidden ducting routed within the moldings.

  • Dedicated electrical supply: A separate 30A breaker was installed on a dedicated panel for enhanced safety and easier maintenance.

Project Duration and Post-Installation Results

The entire installation was completed in two business days, including assembly, pressure testing, vacuuming, and final performance tests. A personalized training session was also provided to the two occupants to maximize the use of the smart remote controls and energy-saving timers.

Since the installation:

  • Measured reduction in heating bill: -45%

  • Immediate improvement in indoor comfort, especially during summer heatwaves

  • No noise perceived indoors or outdoors, thanks to Gree’s high-efficiency compressors
