Cooling without compromising space: the floor-ceiling option is winning over the South Shore

An elegant and high-performing solution for complex spaces on the South Shore

At AirGreen, we understand that every residential or commercial space comes with its own unique challenges when it comes to heating and cooling. In certain setups — low ceilings, large bay windows, no supporting walls — classic options like the wall-mounted heat pump or central system can be difficult or even impossible to install. This is where the floor-ceiling unit becomes the perfect fit, and that’s exactly what we proposed to a client located in Saint-Lambert, on Montréal’s South Shore, as part of a CVAC modernization project.

Where aesthetics meet performance: why choose a floor-ceiling unit?

The floor-ceiling unit is often the ideal solution when you’re looking to combine energy efficiency, thermal comfort, and a clean aesthetic. Unlike wall-mounted units, which are more visible, or ducted systems that require a suspended ceiling, the floor-ceiling unit is installed either at the base or top of a wall — or directly on the ceiling.

In the case of our client in Saint-Lambert, the main living space — a large open-concept room with wide bay windows on two sides — didn’t allow for a traditional wall-mounted setup. No walls were available to support the unit, and the ceiling was concrete, ruling out a ducted system. The only elegant and high-performing solution: the floor-ceiling heat pump.

Technical details of the unit installed in Saint-Lambert

For this project, we selected a Mitsubishi Electric PLA-ZM series unit, known for its reliability, high energy efficiency, and quiet operation. Here are the key specifications:

  • Model: Mitsubishi Electric PLA-ZM100BA

  • Capacity: 36,000 BTU

  • SEER: 20.5

  • HSPF: 11.5

  • Energy class: A++

  • Features: Inverter, silent mode, Wi-Fi control

  • Eligible for Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert rebate program: Yes, with a potential rebate of $2,160

This unit is perfectly suited for large open spaces such as open-concept living rooms or commercial areas, thanks to its even air distribution and precise temperature control.

Key steps in the installation in Saint-Lambert

Installing this type of unit requires specialized technical expertise, which our team fully masters.

Step 1: Site evaluation

Our technicians visited the site to assess installation constraints. The concrete ceiling and absence of a drop ceiling quickly led us to the floor-ceiling solution.

Step 2: Choosing the optimal location

We proposed a high-wall installation on the most open lateral wall, allowing the air to circulate optimally throughout the room, without any obstruction.

Step 3: Drilling and conduit routing

We drilled a passage to run the refrigerant lines to the outdoor unit, which was placed on a concrete slab at the back of the house, with acoustic insulation to minimize noise.

Step 4: Electrical connection and system startup

After installing a dedicated breaker in the electrical panel, our team performed all startup tests, including airflow calibration and leak tests on the refrigeration circuit.

Step 5: Customer training

As with every installation, we trained the customer on how to use their smart remote, explaining all operation modes (heating, cooling, dehumidification, auto), as well as the energy-saving features.

A fully satisfied client

Our client, the owner of a triplex in Saint-Lambert, was looking for a solution that could maintain a stable temperature year-round, without compromising on space or the sleek style of his interior. Thanks to our intervention, he now enjoys increased comfort, notable energy savings, and a discreet system, perfectly integrated into his design.

“The AirGreen team found the only solution that worked for our layout without having to renovate the entire floor. The system is efficient, quiet, and practically invisible. A real success.” — Client testimonial
