Ville de Pointe-Claire: Obtaining a Permit to Install a Heat Pump or Air Conditioning Unit

Installation Rules:

Maximum Height of Units:
- 1.5 meters (4.92 feet) if located in the front or secondary front setback.
- 2 meters (6.6 feet) in a side or rear setback.

Minimum Distance:
- Units must be installed at least 4.57 meters (15 feet) from any street boundary. No minimum distance is required for side or rear setbacks.

Visibility:
- If visible from a street, units must be concealed by an opaque screen (wood or PVC) or a hedge, in accordance with the maximum heights mentioned.
Authorization Certificate:
To install a heat pump, an external air conditioning unit, or any other outdoor mechanical equipment in Pointe-Claire, an authorization certificate is mandatory.
How to Obtain It?

Submission of the Application:
- Email all necessary forms and documents to urbanisme@pointe-claire.ca.
- Forms are available at www.pointe-claire.ca (Permits section).

Required Documents:
- Written authorization from the property owner if the application is submitted by a third party.
- Location certificate.
- Product brochure with technical specifications, brand, dimensions, and noise level.
- Plans showing the equipment location and distances from property boundaries, as well as the description and plans of the screening.

Fees:
- Residential (1 to 4 units): $35 for mechanical equipment; $40 for propane tanks.
- Commercial, industrial, or multifamily: Variable rates.
- Fees are non-refundable and payable to the Ville de Pointe-Claire.
Deadlines and Conditions:
- Approval: The Urban Planning Department will approve the project within 30 days if the file is complete.
- Validity: The authorization certificate is invalid if work does not begin within six months or is not completed within one year of issuance.
