Heat pumps in Waterloo: permits and bylaws
Planning a heat pump or an air conditioner in Waterloo? Here is what the bylaws say: the permit, the distance from the lot lines, where the unit can go and the noise limit. It all comes from the official texts.

Each answer is the bylaw rule, in short. “Not specified” means the text does not say: ask urban planning.
Allowed in the rear yard, at least 1.5 m from the lot lines.
Allowed in the side yard, at least 1.5 m from the lot lines.
Not allowed in the front yard of a single-family, two-family or mobile home. Allowed in the secondary front yard of a corner lot.
On a balcony or on a wall facing a balcony, the unit must not be higher than the balcony railing.
Flat roof: set back at least 2.5 m from the building’s front façade.

- The unit cannot be installed more than 2 m from the main building.
- Buildings with 3 or more dwellings or collective housing: in the front yard, on balconies only.
- Window air conditioner from May 1 to September 30: only the 50 dBA limit applies.

How far from the lot lines must the unit be?
1.5 m from every lot line, no more than 2 m from the main building.
Can a heat pump go in the front yard?

What is the noise limit?
More than 50 dBA at the lot lines: not allowed.
