37 US gallons in a low format, to keep pace with the peak hours of a café or a bar

In a café, the morning line arrives all at once. In a bar, it is rinsing glasses at the end of the evening. In between, hot water is barely used. The Bradford White LE240LN3-3NCWW commercial electric water heater fits that profile well: a 37 US gallon tank (31 imperial gallons, 140 L) to absorb the peak, two 4,500 W elements to recover, and a low 32 3/16 in. format that fits behind a back counter, under a staircase or in a low-ceilinged basement. AirGreen installs it in cafés, restaurants and businesses in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the South Shore and the North Shore.

The peak hours of service

A food-service establishment does not use its hot water evenly. There are sharp peaks, when the sinks, the handwashing station and cleaning all draw at once, then long quieter stretches. The 37 US gallon reserve absorbs the peak; during the quiet stretches, the elements rebuild the reserve. That split between volume and recovery is what gets you through service without running out of hot water.

If peaks become longer or more frequent, the manufacturer provides a useful option: switching to simultaneous operation, which increases recovery without changing the unit.

Manufacturer data for the LE240LN3-3NCWW

  • Capacity: 37 US gallons (31 imperial gallons, 140 L).
  • Recovery: 18 US gallons per hour (15 imperial gallons) at a 100 °F rise; 68 L/h at a 56 °C rise, in 4,500 W/4,500 W non-simultaneous operation.
  • Elements: two 4,500 W screw-in immersion elements, copper; INCOLOY-type element available on request.
  • Factory wiring: 240 V three-phase, interlocking (non-simultaneous), unless otherwise specified.
  • Voltages provided: 120 V, 208 V, 240 V, 277 V and 480 V; 380 V in the kit table.
  • Water connections: 3/4 in. (19 mm) NPT, factory-installed true dielectric fittings.
  • Tank: Vitraglas vitreous enamel with Microban.
  • Height: 32 3/16 in. (818 mm). Diameter: 24 1/2 in. (622 mm). Weight: 115 lb (52 kg).

Switching to simultaneous operation

At the factory, the two elements are wired interlocking: only one heats at a time. According to Bradford White, the unit can be converted on site for simultaneous operation, and recovery then approximately doubles. For a café whose morning peak stretches out, or a restaurant adding a service, this conversion can make all the difference.

It does have an electrical trade-off, however: both 4,500 W elements run together, which increases the load on the circuit and the panel. Before recommending this option, we check the available capacity and the circuit size. If the conditions are met, the conversion is done during installation and written into the quote.

A low format for back counters and basements

At 32 3/16 in. high and 24 1/2 in. in diameter, the LE240LN3-3NCWW is wider than it is tall. That format allows it to be installed where a vertical tank would not fit: under a flight of stairs, in the low basement of an old commercial building on the Plateau or in Saint-Henri, or in a utility space set up behind the bar. Its 115 lb empty weight is handled by two people. We check the clear height, the space for servicing the elements and the proximity of a drain for the relief valve.

Power supply: three-phase from the factory, single-phase on site

The unit is shipped in the standard three-phase configuration, wired at 240 V with two 4,500 W elements. The manufacturer provides for its field conversion to single-phase, a valuable option in the many commercial spaces without three-phase power. Since Bradford White asks that wattage and voltage be specified when ordering, we confirm the exact configuration in our written quote after examining your panel.

Hygiene and durability in food service

The tank is lined with Vitraglas vitreous enamel with Microban, an antimicrobial technology. The factory-installed true dielectric fittings limit corrosion at the joint with the piping. The standard elements are copper; when the water is hard, an INCOLOY-type element, available on request, resists corrosion better. In both cases, the elements screw in and can be replaced without removing the tank.

Maintenance between services

A restaurant water heater works every day. We recommend one visit a year, scheduled outside opening hours: flushing the tank to clear sediment, checking both elements and their thermostats, and testing the relief valve. That routine extends the unit’s life and keeps a breakdown from happening in the middle of service.

Listing and warranty

According to Bradford White’s documentation, all models are UL listed. The "3" in the model number corresponds to the 3-year limited tank warranty and 1 year on parts. The manufacturer also offers 5-year warranty versions under a different number; if that option interests you, we check its availability.

  • a free on-site assessment of the location, the clear height, the consumption peaks and the electrical panel;
  • a recommendation on the configuration (single-phase or three-phase, simultaneous or not), confirmed in a written quote;
  • draining and removing the old tank, then disposing of it;
  • connecting the cold and hot water in 3/4 in., the relief valve and its discharge;
  • the electrical connections, made under our RBQ licence;
