Plenty of hot water for large homes heated by an electric boiler

A large freestanding tub, a multi-jet shower in the primary suite, a basement bathroom for guests: when a home adds up the fixtures, the hot water reserve becomes the weak link. The Bradford White SS-75-L indirect water heater meets this need with 73 US gallons (60 imperial gallons, 274 L) of potable water heated by the home's electric boiler, through a stainless steel coil. AirGreen installs and connects it in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore and on the North Shore.

The big tub and back-to-back showers

Filling a large tub empties a good part of an ordinary tank in a few minutes. With an indirect tank, the boiler recharges the reserve while the water runs, which explains the first-hour rating of 367 gal/h (1,389 L/h) published for the SS-75-L according to AHRI. For a large family or a home that often has guests, it is the difference between a lukewarm shower at the end of the evening and hot water that lasts until the last person. These figures assume a boiler able to supply the output specified by the manufacturer, a point we explain below.

A tall, slim format

Despite its large capacity, the SS-75-L keeps a diameter of 24 in. (610 mm). It gains its volume in height, at 65 5/8 in. (1,667 mm), which lets it take up little floor space in a mechanical room already crowded with the boiler, the electrical panel and the air exchanger. Empty, it weighs 142 lb (64 kg); once full, the weight increases considerably, so we check that the floor is sound at the intended location.

Manufacturer specifications

  • Capacity: 73 US gallons, 60 imperial gallons, 274 L.
  • First-hour rating (AHRI): 367 gal/h or 1,389 L/h, boiler at 180 °F (82 °C).
  • Continuous draw: 307 gal/h at 135 °F (1,162 L/h at 57 °C).
  • Standby heat loss: 0.4 °F/h (0.22 °C/h).
  • Minimum heat source input: 193,000 BTU/h.
  • Minimum heat source flow: 14.0 gal/min (53.0 L/min).
  • Boiler supply: 240 °F (116 °C) maximum.
  • Heat exchanger: single-wall stainless steel coil, 1 in. (25 mm) outside diameter.
  • Connections: 3/4 in. NPT for potable water; 1 in. (25 mm) female NPT at the front for the boiler.
  • Dimensions: 65 5/8 in. tall by 24 in. in diameter; 142 lb.

How the coil does the work

The SS-75-L contains no electric element. At the centre of the tank, a long stainless steel coil receives hot water from the boiler, which gives up its heat to the potable water and then returns to the boiler through the return connection. The two circuits remain separate at all times. When the tank sensor is satisfied, the boiler goes back to space heating. A priority control usually gives precedence to hot water during these cycles, which remain short.

The boiler has to keep pace

According to Bradford White, the SS-75-L ratings are obtained with a heat source of at least 193,000 BTU/h, a flow of 14.0 gal/min and boiler water at 180 °F (82 °C). The manufacturer specifies that other conditions produce other results. In an electrically heated home, the boiler often has a more modest output: the tank then delivers its full 73 US gallon reserve, but it recharges more slowly than the table indicates. During the assessment, we compare your boiler's output, its heating load in extreme cold and your actual usage. If the boiler is already at its limit in January, we tell you before proposing anything.

444 stainless steel and low standby loss

The tank and coil are made of 444 ferritic stainless steel, a chromium, molybdenum and titanium alloy, with no internal lining. With a standby loss of 0.4 °F/h, the reserve holds its heat during quiet hours, which spares the boiler frequent restarts. The low-restriction brass drain valve, with a tamper-resistant design, makes maintenance easier, and the model's ratings are AHRI certified.

Safe hot water at the tap

Large tanks are sometimes set to a high temperature to stretch the reserve. In that case, we recommend a thermostatic mixing valve at the outlet, which brings the water back to a safe temperature at the taps while still taking advantage of the hotter reserve. It is a particularly useful precaution in a home with young children or older adults.

The SS-75-L installed and connected by AirGreen

A family-owned heating and cooling company established in Montreal, AirGreen has been active for more than fifteen years and holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. We begin with a free on-site estimate, then give you a detailed written quote. Installation includes:

  • assessing the electric boiler, its output and its heating load;
  • checking the location, the available height and the floor;
  • draining and removing the old water heater;
  • connecting the coil to the boiler in 1 in. NPT, with a circulator or zone valve;
  • connecting the cold and hot water in 3/4 in. NPT, with a thermostatic mixing valve if needed;
  • installing the relief valve and its discharge line;
  • wiring the control and setting hot water priority;
  • commissioning, air purging and our maintenance advice, including one partial flush per year.
