Quick facts
The galvanized wye fitting creates a branch on a round duct: the main duct continues straight through and the branch comes off at an angle. Depending on the direction of the air, it splits one flow into two or joins two ducts into one.
A branch take-off that restricts the air less
Every change of direction takes away a little airflow. Because the branch comes off at an angle rather than at 90°, the wye turns the air more gently than a tee fitting. It is the choice when you want to feed two outlets from the same forced-air branch, or distribute air from an air exchanger to several rooms.
Splitting or joining
- To split: the branch points downstream, in the direction of the airflow.
- To join: the branch points toward the fan or the unit, so the two flows merge without colliding.
To join two bathroom exhausts, first check what the fan manufacturer and the code allow, and keep a backdraft damper on each unit.
Sizes and installation
Available in 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 in, based on the nominal duct diameter. Screw all three connections and seal them with aluminum tape or duct sealant. If you want two identical branches on either side of the centreline, the centred wye fitting is a better fit.
Supplied and installed by AirGreen in Greater Montréal
We design and install ventilation and forced-air systems in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore and on the North Shore. RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subcategory 15.8 Ventilation. For availability or a quote, call us at 514 316-2973 or email sales@airgreen.ca with the diameter and quantity.
Splitting the air without forcing it
The branch leaves at an angle rather than square: the air turns more gently than in a tee.
- Splitting a forced-air branch toward two outlets
- Joining two bathroom exhaust ducts to one fan
- Air exchanger duct systems serving several rooms
- Adding an outlet on an existing branch

What to know before installing
- The size is the nominal round duct diameter.
- Point the branch with the airflow: angled downstream when it splits, toward the fan when it joins.
- For a symmetrical wye with both branches at the same angle, see the centred wye.
- Screw and seal all three joints with foil tape or mastic.

Frequently asked questions
Wye or tee?
Both create a branch. The wye takes it off at an angle, which slows the air less; the tee takes it off at 90°, more compact when space is tight.
Can two bathroom fans share one duct?
A wye can join two ducts. Before doing so, check what the fan maker and the code allow: each fan must keep its own backdraft damper.
How is it different from the centred wye?
Here one branch continues straight and the other leaves at an angle. In the centred wye, both branches split away on either side of the axis.
Can you install it?
Yes. We design and install ventilation and forced-air duct systems across Greater Montréal.
