Quick facts
Reserve capacity and large connections for bigger hot-water systems
The more zones, units or appliances a hot-water heating loop serves, the more it needs a stable reserve between the source and the distribution. The Thermo 2000 BuffMax BUFF80-2.5NPT-HRZ-HC buffer tank offers 80 US gallons of insulated water and four 2 1/2 in NPT side connections. Like the other BuffMax tanks, it plays three roles at once: buffer tank, storage tank and hydraulic separator.
When to move up to 80 gallons
This size targets systems where demand varies a lot from one hour to the next. Take a triplex in Montreal heated by a central electric boiler: three units, three thermostats, different schedules. Or a workshop on the North Shore heated with water, where an open garage door makes demand jump all at once. In these cases, the BUFF80’s volume lets the source run longer cycles while the distribution draws what it needs. Thermo 2000 recommends the BuffMax for low-mass boilers, heat pump systems and multi-zone systems.
The HC code adds one more option: the same tank accepts chilled water. A building equipped with a reversible air-to-water heat pump therefore keeps a single tank for both seasons.
2 1/2 in connections for higher flows
Two connections on each side separate the source circuit from the distribution circuit. At 2 1/2 in NPT, they keep up with the flow of a larger loop. Three 1/2 in connections and an immersion well let us place the temperature sensor where the source’s control needs it. The 2-inch HFC-free polyurethane insulation limits heat loss to 1/2 °F per hour, according to the manufacturer, and the tank accepts 150 psi and 121 °C (250 °F).
A 75 1/2-inch tank: ceiling height matters
At 75 1/2 inches high and 24 inches in diameter, the BUFF80 has to be planned ahead. In basements in Laval or Longueuil, beams and ducts often lower the clear height. We measure the location, the door openings and the stairs before ordering. The adjustable legs then correct an uneven floor.
AirGreen installation and next steps
AirGreen installs the BuffMax with electric boilers and air-to-water heat pumps, in Montreal, on the South Shore, on the North Shore and throughout Greater Montreal. Our work covers:
- the free on-site estimate and a detailed written quote;
- setting the tank and connecting the source side and the distribution side;
- installing the supplied air vent, drain valve and temperature and pressure indicator;
- filling, purging and commissioning the whole loop.
A family business established in Montreal for more than 15 years, we hold RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 (ventilation, refrigeration and electrical). Thermo 2000 warrants the tank for 5 years and the mechanical parts for 2 years, in residential or commercial use, under its terms.
Send us the number of zones or units and the planned source: we confirm whether the BUFF80 is the right choice. The estimate is free and financing is available.
A water reserve for large homes, plexes and small buildings
The BUFF80 acts as a buffer, a storage tank and a hydraulic separator when the loop serves many zones or several units. Its 2 1/2 in NPT connections handle the flow of a larger system.
- Large house heated with water and many zones
- Plex whose units share a central electric boiler
- Workshop, garage or small commercial space heated with water
- Chilled-water loop supplied by a reversible air-to-water heat pump

What to know before installing
- 75 1/2 in high: check the ceiling height and the clearance under the basement beams, as well as the path to the mechanical room.
- 24 in diameter: plan clearance for the connections on both sides.
- Closed loop only: Thermo 2000 prohibits connection to domestic hot water or to an atmospheric system.
- The tank produces neither heat nor cooling: it is added to an electric boiler or an air-to-water heat pump.
- 1/2 in ball valve
- 1/2 in automatic air vent
- 2 1/2 in temperature and pressure indicator
- Immersion well
- 3/4 in drain valve
- Adjustable legs

Frequently asked questions
Why 80 gallons rather than a smaller size?
The volume is chosen according to the source, the number of zones and the smallest load to cover. In a large house, a plex or a commercial space, the loop often needs more reserve and larger connections. We do the calculation during the free estimate.
Will the tank fit in an ordinary basement?
It is 75 1/2 in high and 24 in in diameter. We check the clear height under the beams, the door widths and the stairs before confirming the order.
Is it suitable for a commercial building?
Yes. Thermo 2000 warrants the tank for 5 years and the mechanical parts for 2 years, in residential as well as commercial use, in Canada and the United States.
Which parts come with the tank?
A 1/2 in ball valve and automatic air vent, a 2 1/2 in temperature and pressure indicator, an immersion well, a 3/4 in drain valve and adjustable legs.
Can it be connected to the hot water for the taps?
No. The BuffMax is reserved for closed heating or chilled-water loops; the manufacturer prohibits any connection to domestic hot water.
