A complete HVAC system for optimal comfort, even in the attic
At AirGreen , we regularly install central HVAC systems in cramped or atypical technical spaces, such as attics or converted lofts. This project in Boisbriand , on the North Shore of Montreal , perfectly illustrates our ability to combine energy performance , aesthetics and installation safety .
The context: modernizing an old heating system
The client wanted to replace an old, noisy, energy-consuming unit with a modern, more efficient and quieter Midea central heat pump . The goal: to reduce energy bills while providing consistent comfort, summer and winter, throughout the two-story home.
After a complete inspection of the attic, we found:
-
A small space, with an exposed wooden frame.
-
Mineral wool insulation to be preserved.
-
A partially reusable old conduit network.
We therefore planned a tailor-made installation , adapted to the configuration of the place.
Step 1: Prepare and secure the installation area
Our technicians started by:
-
Reinforce the support platform with OSB panels to support the indoor unit.
-
Thermally insulate the base to prevent condensation under the module.
-
Check the strength of the joists to ensure stable anchoring of the system.
We then installed a PVC condensate drain with a slight drop for optimal gravitational flow. A float switch was also integrated to prevent any risk of water infiltration in the event of a drain blockage.
Step 2: Installation of the indoor module and refrigeration connections
The Midea central heat pump was carefully positioned in the attic. This type of unit requires millimeter precision in the installation of insulated copper pipes to ensure maximum cooling performance.
Work carried out:
-
Precise bending of copper pipes to fit the attic structure without mechanical stress.
-
Connecting Schrader valves and drawing a vacuum to -500 microns to remove any moisture.
-
Installation of Armaflex insulation along the entire length of the pipes.
-
Fixing communication and power lines with heat-resistant clips.
Everything was done in compliance with CSA standards and Midea specifications .
Step 3: Electrical Connection and Control Setup
The AirGreen control panel was connected to a dedicated 20A circuit breaker protected power supply , with CEC compliant wiring.
We also installed a Wi-Fi enabled Midea digital thermostat , allowing the customer to control their heat pump from their phone.
The following settings have been configured:
-
Automatic operating mode (heating/cooling).
-
Defrosting curve adapted to the climate of Greater Montreal.
-
Fan calibration for balanced air distribution.
Step 4: Commissioning and Performance Verification
Before the official start-up, our technicians carried out a complete inspection :
-
Checking operating pressures and refrigerant flow.
-
Condensate drain flow test.
-
Vibration and ambient noise control.
-
Measurement of the blowing temperature (difference of 18°C between intake and outlet).
Once the heat pump was operational, the house reached a comfortable temperature in less than 20 minutes. The client immediately noticed the difference: silence, consistency, and significantly greater cooling power than his previous unit.
Result: a system ready for all four seasons
Thanks to this professional AirGreen installation , the house now benefits from:
-
Superior energy efficiency (up to 18 SEER).
-
A significant reduction in electricity consumption .
-
Quiet operation , even in rest areas.
The system is designed to last, with corrosion protection on the coils and easy maintenance thanks to the clear access to the front panel.
At AirGreen, we operate in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore , for any central heat pump installation or replacement project.
Each project is carefully researched, executed and tested to ensure optimal performance all year round , even in the most demanding environments such as attics.
