A breakdown detected in the middle of urban heat
On a particularly hot July day, a condo owner in Montreal's Plateau-Mont-Royal region contacted us about a broken LG wall-mounted air conditioner installed on his terrace. The unit, although seemingly functional, was no longer producing cold air. With the heat building up in the apartment and direct sunlight shining on the facade, the situation required rapid intervention.
At AirGreen , we understand that every HVAC system failure is urgent, especially when it occurs in a dense urban environment like the Plateau. So, we dispatched a technician the same day to diagnose the problem.
Diagnosis and initial observations
The LG Inverter outdoor unit, installed on a wooden deck, was in good condition. However, while measuring the discharge temperature and refrigerant pressure, our technician noticed a thermal imbalance between the evaporator and the compressor .
The stages of diagnosis:
-
Checking the electrical connection : stable voltage and correct power supply.
-
Condenser inspection : accumulation of fine dust partially obstructing the fins.
-
R-410A gas pressure measurement : level below normal.
-
Condensate drain analysis : good flow, therefore no obstruction.
These observations indicated a microleak in the refrigeration circuit , probably at the level of an internal flare connection.
Repair carried out by AirGreen
Once the leak was confirmed with a nitrogen test, our technician took the following steps:
-
Resealing the flare fitting after complete cleaning of the copper tube;
-
Nitrogen pressure test maintained for 45 minutes to ensure watertightness;
-
Creation of a complete vacuum in the circuit in order to eliminate all humidity;
-
Accurate recharge with R-410A refrigerant according to LG manufacturer specifications;
-
Complete cleaning of the outdoor condenser to optimize airflow and reduce compressor load.
Final check and results
After the repair, the LG wall-mounted air conditioner was restarted. Measurements revealed a blowing temperature of 6.5°C , confirming optimal performance.
The compressor operated quietly , without excessive vibration or pressure fluctuations. The owner noticed a clear difference within the first few minutes: the indoor temperature dropped quickly, restoring comfort throughout the condo.
Maintenance advice provided to the customer
To avoid any recurrence of this type of breakdown, our AirGreen technician recommended:
-
annual cleaning of the coil and filters;
-
a preventive inspection in the spring to check the refrigerant charge;
-
maintain a clearance of at least 30 cm around the outdoor unit to ensure good ventilation;
-
avoid placing furniture or objects near the compressor, especially on a wooden deck where heat can accumulate.
