A visual inspection revealed a lack of maintenance around the unit

Even before opening the service panel, we inspected the immediate environment of the device. For a central system, the outdoor unit must breathe. Air must pass through the side coil, absorb or release heat depending on the mode, then be expelled upward by the fan. Electrical safety and panel opening

Before working on the device, we cut the power at the external disconnect and confirmed the absence of voltage in the service compartment. On a central heat pump, the electrical components are subjected to heavy loads: compressor, fan motor, capacitor, contactor, power wires, and control connections.

We then opened the service panel to inspect:

  • the contactor;
  • the capacitor;
  • electrical connections;
  • control wires;
  • signs of overheating;
  • the general condition of the compartment;
  • possible vibrations around components.

The contactor showed normal wear for a unit of this age, but the capacitor showed clear signs of weakness during measurements. Its actual value was below the expected nominal value, which largely explained the hesitant startups and unstable fan behavior.

Replacing the weakened capacitor

We replaced the run capacitor with a part compatible with the unit’s specifications. This component is essential: it helps the fan motor and, depending on the setup, the compressor to start and run properly. When it weakens, the unit can still operate for a while, but each startup becomes more demanding.

A weakened capacitor can cause:

  • a buzzing noise at startup;
  • a fan that starts slowly;
  • motor overheating;
  • intermittent shutdowns;
  • a drop in performance;
  • a risk of compressor damage.

After replacement, we checked the startup stability. The top fan started up more regularly, and the noise initially reported by the customer decreased.

Outdoor coil cleaning

The second major step was to clean the outdoor coil. In the photo, the general condition of the unit clearly shows the impact of time: dust, deposits, debris, and constant exposure to outdoor conditions. In Ville-Marie, units installed near foundation walls often accumulate fine particles from the street, trees, urban works, and surrounding vegetation.

We carefully cleaned the fins to restore better airflow. This operation must be done cautiously. Too much pressure can bend the fins and worsen the airflow restriction. Too superficial a cleaning leaves deposits deep inside and does not solve the performance issue.

Outdoor fan inspection

The fourth mistake is continuing to use the system despite difficult startups. Each startup attempt with a weak capacitor can increase stress on the motor and compressor.
