A delicate intervention for a poorly positioned outdoor unit
At AirGreen , we were recently called for HVAC repair service in a duplex in the Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie neighborhood of Montreal. The customer contacted us after noticing that their wall-mounted Friedrich heat pump was making an unusual vibrating noise and that its cooling performance had significantly decreased over the past few days.
On site, our technician quickly understood the situation: the outdoor condenser was poorly positioned and partially resting on... a wheeled bin ! This improvised support, although temporary according to the customer, caused amplified vibrations and misalignment of the condensate drainage system , risking in the medium term damage to the fittings and the fan.
Complete diagnosis: vibrations, obstruction and tension on the piping
The Friedrich unit, although solid, did not tolerate this unstable installation. After a thorough inspection, we identified three main problems:
-
Warped wall support , causing a negative angle towards the wall;
-
Excessive vibration transmitted to the brick wall, creating recurring noise inside;
-
Refrigerant pipes too tight , risking a micro-leak of refrigerant in the long term.
The compressor itself was functional, but its mechanical damping was compromised, reducing the efficiency of the heat pump and increasing electricity consumption.
Repair steps: stabilization and complete upgrade
Our technician immediately secured the unit:
-
complete disassembly of the Friedrich condenser ;
-
removal of the old wall bracket which had lost its plumb line;
-
installation of a new, robust galvanized support , fitted with anti-vibration silent blocks;
-
realignment of drainage and clearance of air passage around the unit;
-
checking the vacuum and pressure of the refrigeration circuit (no leaks detected, R-410A stable).
Once the heat pump was reinstalled, the unit returned to smooth and quiet operation. The outdoor fan ran smoothly, and the indoor blower temperature stabilized in less than ten minutes.
Result: efficiency restored and structural risk eliminated
Thanks to this intervention, the client not only regained the expected comfort, but also avoided a costly breakdown. Prolonged misalignment of this type can, over time, cause:
-
the breaking of a copper solder ,
-
a refrigerant leak ,
-
and even premature wear of the compressor .
Our intervention therefore made it possible to avoid major deterioration of the system while restoring optimal performance to the Friedrich heat pump.
The importance of positioning for the durability of a heat pump
A wall-mounted heat pump, regardless of the brand, must always be installed on a stable, horizontal and clear support . Incorrect positioning causes:
-
vibrations harmful to the structure;
-
poor air circulation around the condenser;
-
increased energy inefficiency ;
-
and premature aging of the ventilation motor.
At AirGreen, we always emphasize this point during our HVAC installations and repairs : the performance of a Friedrich, Gree, Sharp, Midea or Fujitsu appliance depends as much on the quality of the installation as on the quality of the product itself.
AirGreen Tips to Avoid Vibrations and Abnormal Noises
-
Check your support level at least once a year.
-
Never place any object under the outdoor unit , even temporarily.
-
Clear the area around the condenser to promote airflow.
-
Inspect the mounting screws and damping seals every season.
-
If you hear a new noise, call a professional quickly — a weak signal may be hiding a serious mechanical problem.
