Repair of a Samsung wall-mounted heat pump in Châteauguay

An HVAC system placed under a terrace: a technical challenge mastered

At AirGreen , we understand that every HVAC installation has its own unique characteristics. Recently, our team was called upon in Châteauguay , on the South Shore of Montreal , to work on a Samsung Smart Inverter wall-mounted heat pump installed under a covered patio. This type of location, although sheltered from the elements, can pose several challenges related to ventilation , condensation , and component corrosion .

The client contacted us after noticing that their heat pump was no longer producing efficient hot air in heating mode. Additionally, a metallic rubbing noise could be heard every time the compressor started. Our mission: to diagnose, repair, and ensure the system's proper operation without having to relocate the existing installation.

Step One: Inspection of the Environment and Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit, a 9,000 BTU Samsung Smart Inverter , was securely mounted on a metal wall bracket under the deck floor. This configuration, common in homes with partially open basements, provides good protection against snow but limits airflow around the condenser .

During our visual inspection, we observed:

  • Traces of condensation and light corrosion on the lower sheet metal.

  • A buildup of debris (dust, pollen and cobwebs) on the condenser fins.

  • Power wiring exposed to direct contact with ambient moisture.

These conditions could compromise the electrical stability of the compressor and explain the symptoms described by the customer.

Diagnosis: noise and loss of performance

We started the system to observe its behavior.
A few seconds after activation, a brief squealing noise appeared, followed by a premature shutdown of the compressor .
Electrical measurements revealed an abnormally high starting current (6.9 A) , a sign of an overloaded motor .

We also took a reading of the pressures:

  • Suction pressure: 78 psi

  • Discharge pressure: 230 psi

These values confirmed an insufficient refrigerant charge , likely caused by a microleak.

Intervention: cleaning, tightening and recharging

Our technicians undertook a complete overhaul of the heat pump:

  1. Cleaning the condenser using a pH-neutral biodegradable cleaner, followed by a low-pressure rinse.

  2. Replaced the power cable and added a silicone gasket to protect the electrical box from moisture.

  3. Nitrogen leak test of the refrigeration circuit: a minimal leak was detected on the liquid side flare connection .

  4. Replaced the copper seal and tightened to the exact torque recommended by Samsung.

  5. Vacuum seal for 40 minutes to remove all traces of moisture.

  6. Complete recharge of R-410A at the nominal quantity of 850 g.

Verification and results

After the repair, we restarted the heat pump in heating mode to validate the performance:

  • Suction pressure: 128 psi

  • Discharge pressure: 385 psi

  • Indoor blowing temperature: 45°C

  • Electrical intensity: 4.2 A (normal value)

The startup noise had completely disappeared, a sign that the compressor and fan motor were operating within their optimal parameters again.

We also added anti-vibration pads under the support to eliminate any resonance on the metal structure of the terrace.

Prevention advice given to the client

Before leaving the premises, we shared several practical recommendations with the owner:

  • Clean the area around the heat pump at least twice a year to prevent the buildup of stagnant moisture.

  • Never obstruct the side grilles of the condenser, even with storage objects.

  • Schedule annual maintenance including checking inrush current and refrigerant level.

  • Install a small dehumidifier or a fan if the space under the deck remains constantly humid.

These simple measures will significantly extend the life of the compressor and ensure optimal energy efficiency, even in a semi-closed environment.

Result: heat pump restored and customer satisfied

In just one visit, the AirGreen team was able to restore this Samsung Smart Inverter wall-mounted heat pump to full performance.
The customer now benefits from stable, quiet and energy-efficient heating , ready to face the coming seasons without hassle.

This intervention demonstrates our know-how in the repair of HVAC systems installed in atypical environments , an area where AirGreen's expertise and technical rigor make all the difference.
