A breakdown at the start of the cold season
When a Sanyo wall-mounted heat pump stops working as winter approaches, indoor comfort can quickly be compromised. This is exactly what happened in a single-family home in Saint-Constant , on Montreal's South Shore. The customer contacted us after noticing that their outdoor unit was no longer starting, even though the indoor control seemed to be in good condition.
The installation, which is approximately ten years old, consists of a Sanyo 12,000 BTU wall-mounted system , which was very popular at the time for its reliability and ease of maintenance. However, as with any older system, natural wear and tear on the electrical components can cause sudden shutdowns.
Initial inspection and diagnosis
Our certified technician began with a series of essential checks:
-
Power supply : correct voltage at 240 V.
-
Service panel fuses : intact.
-
Control signal between units : present.
-
Outdoor fan start : inactive.
After opening the Sanyo condenser housing, the origin of the problem was confirmed: the compressor start relay showed signs of burning and overheating, a classic problem on older models.
Intervention: replacement and optimization
The intervention was carried out in three precise stages:
-
Complete replacement of the starter relay and main capacitor , using compatible parts approved by the manufacturer.
-
Internal cleaning of the condenser , where dust and small leaves had blocked the lower grille, reducing airflow.
-
Check the wiring and tighten all connections , especially those exposed to the weather.
Once the components were replaced and the system closed, the heat pump restarted normally. The compressor returned to smooth operation without abnormal noise, and the outdoor fan resumed stable rotation.
The indoor blown air temperature was measured at 41°C , confirming the full heating capacity of the system.
Maintenance tips to extend lifespan
As is often the case with older Sanyo units, regular maintenance is essential to avoid electrical breakdowns. Our recommendations to the customer included:
-
Annual preventive maintenance including complete cleaning of the coil and checking of electrical connections.
-
Checking consumption in heating mode , a key indicator of a possible loss of compressor efficiency.
-
Clear the area around the outdoor unit , especially in winter, to ensure optimal airflow.
We also installed additional moisture protection on the exterior conduit to prevent water from entering the electrical box. This type of small preventive adjustment significantly increases the system's lifespan and reduces the risk of short circuits.
