A carefully designed project, designed for four-season comfort and the aesthetics of brick plexes
Context and objectives of the project
In a typical Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie duplex, our clients wanted a discreet, efficient system for supplemental heating in the winter and efficient for cooling in the summer, without cluttering the backyard. We recommended a latest-generation GREE wall-mounted heat pump with R-32 refrigerant , ideal for Montreal homes looking for an excellent performance/noise/consumption ratio.
Our mandate:
-
optimize the comfort of the living areas upstairs;
-
reduce energy bills compared to portable air conditioners;
-
preserve the integrity and aesthetics of the brick facade ;
-
guarantee a durable, quiet and easy-to-maintain HVAC installation .
Why a GREE R-32 for a Montreal plex?
The new GREE R-32 ranges (Livo, Vireo, Clivia, Sapphire, etc.) are distinguished by:
-
better seasonal efficiencies and reduced refrigerant charge compared to R-410A;
-
stable heating in cold weather (down to −25°C depending on the series ), very relevant for Greater Montreal;
-
contained noise levels both inside and outside, a guarantee of peace and quiet for co-ownerships;
-
compatibility with several lengths of refrigeration connections, useful in plexes where routes vary;
-
compact design of the condenser facilitating installation on wall supports .
For this project, the capacity was sized according to the main surface area to be air-conditioned/heated, the orientation, the insulation, the solar gains and the use of the premises. This approach avoids oversizing , which is a source of short cycles, discomfort and unnecessary consumption.
Salient installation details
Outdoor installation. The condenser is mounted on galvanized steel wall brackets with silentblocs (anti-vibration pads visible under the base), in order to:
-
mechanically decouple the unit from the masonry;
-
reduce the transmission of vibrations and therefore the noise perceived inside;
-
facilitate ground clearance for snow and maintenance.
The unit is positioned at a safe height to limit snow accumulation and allow good air circulation. We adhere to recommended side and rear clearances to maintain rated performance and simplify access to the housing for maintenance.
Wall penetration and route. The refrigeration connection (insulated copper), the inter-unit power supply and the condensation drain are grouped together and capped towards the inside. The wall penetration is drilled with a slight outgoing slope to protect the building envelope. The passage is sealed (brick-compatible sealant) to prevent air and water ingress. In this type of plex, the cleanest solution is to quickly reach the interior space behind the wall head, minimizing lengths and pressure losses .
Noise management. In addition to the silent blocks, the chosen location is away from immediate window openings and rest areas. The external fan speed and night modes available on the GREE range contribute to discreet operation, appreciated in urban courtyards.
Power supply and protection. The circuit is protected according to the nominal currents of the selected model, with a dedicated circuit breaker and external disconnection nearby (local electrical requirements). The grounding, gauge, and type of cable comply with current standards.
Interior integration and comfort
The wall-mounted fan head is mounted on a load-bearing interior wall of the living room for even distribution. The shutters direct the airflow to prevent direct drafts on the occupants. The range's intelligent defrosting and eco modes optimize the comfort/consumption balance.
Condensates. In this configuration, the flow is by gravity with a controlled slope up to the outlet point; a non-return valve and an anti-freeze device are provided when the route passes through a cold zone. Result: no free water near the building, no nuisance for the neighborhood.
Observed results
Upon commissioning:
-
drop in indoor temperature of more than 6–8 °C in less than one hour on a hot day;
-
stability of the setpoint without uncomfortable variations;
-
very low outside noise , imperceptible from the street and low in the courtyard.
Consumption monitoring in the first month shows a significant decrease in the use of auxiliary appliances compared to previous summers. In winter, the heating function will relieve the electric radiators during the inter-seasons and take over until the low temperatures provided by the chosen series.
Grants and Eligibility
High-efficiency R-32 wall-mounted heat pumps may be eligible for provincial or municipal programs when performance criteria are met (cold operating temperatures, efficiency ratings, certification). We support our clients in documenting the performance of the installed model and preparing files according to the requirements in force in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, North Shore and South Shore .
Recommended HVAC maintenance
To maintain seasonal performance:
-
cleaning of internal filters every 4–6 weeks during heavy use;
-
annual inspection : exchanger, fans, condensate tray, electrical tightening, pressures, leak test;
-
winter clearance of the outdoor unit (snow/ice) so as not to obstruct air intake;
-
maintaining free space around the unit (vegetation, objects).
Regular HVAC maintenance extends the life of the machine and keeps consumption at the expected level.
Points of attention (not to be overlooked in brick plexes)
-
Drilling : always use dowels and anchors suitable for masonry; avoid undersized fixings.
-
Vibration management : use quality silent blocks and tighten to the correct torque; check after 2–3 weeks.
-
Defrosting and snow : raise the condenser sufficiently and avoid areas of accumulation under the cornice.
-
Shortest possible route : limits losses and facilitates future diagnosis.
-
Condensate drainage : never on sidewalks or immediate neighbors; use a discreet exit that complies with regulations.
What we bring to this type of installation
At AirGreen , we understand the constraints of Montreal buildings : brick walls, sometimes restricted access, close neighborhoods, alleys, metal balconies, walkways. Our teams plan the construction site to reduce the visual footprint , optimize real performance and ensure the sustainability of the installation. Each commissioning includes:
-
verification of loads and pressures ;
-
leak test and vacuum draw compliant;
-
configuration of comfort modes and explanations of use;
-
submission of a commissioning report useful for guarantees.
Balance sheet
This GREE R-32 wall-mounted heat pump installation in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie offers four-season comfort with minimal noise and a finish that blends seamlessly into the brick façade. It illustrates our approach: rigorous sizing , meticulous installation , and comprehensive support for customers in Greater Montreal — Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, North Shore, South Shore .
