Installation of a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump in Plateau-Mont-Royal
AirGreen installs a Sharp R-32 wall-mounted heat pump in a Plateau-Mont-Royal plex: short refrigerant path, gravity drain, bracket installation and discreet finishes for quiet and energy-efficient comfort.

Take a tour of the installation
Each number is a point we check on site. Switch between summer and winter to watch air and heat move.
In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.

Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.
The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.
Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.
A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.
The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.
On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.
The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.
Careful installation in a Plateau plex for precise, quiet and energy-efficient comfort
At AirGreen , we work weekly in the typical plexes of Plateau-Mont-Royal . In this bright apartment overlooking a backyard with an exterior metal staircase, we are installing a recent Sharp wall-mounted heat pump ( R-32 refrigerant) to ensure stable comfort in both winter and summer, while reducing energy costs. This project illustrates our HVAC installation method designed for Montreal architecture: shared walls, limited drilling, gravity condensate management, and clean finishes.
Context, needs and capacity choices
The apartment features an open living area (living room and dining room) with a southwest exposure. Air conditioning requirements are particularly high during heat waves, while supplemental heating in the spring and fall significantly improves comfort. We estimate a typical capacity of 9,000 to 12,000 BTUs depending on the room's exact thermal load (surface area, glazing, orientation, air infiltration). The Sharp R-32 range's low-temperature operating range makes it a suitable solution for winter supplemental heating in the Montreal metropolitan area.
Key steps of installation (AirGreen method)
1) Implantation of the inner head
The wall head is placed at the top of the wall , to the left of a window and close to the corner of the room. This position allows:
-
longitudinal diffusion along the ceiling to avoid areas of draft,
-
the shortcut of the refrigerant route (direct exit to the backyard),
-
maintaining the required clearances on the front and left side for maintenance.
We fix the plate to structural uprights with dowels adapted to the support, ensure a perfectly level bed , then carry out the passage of the technical duct (refrigeration + drain + cable) through a drilling ≈ 65 mm with vapor barrier sleeve .
2) Condensate drain management — gravity and discreet
The strong point of this configuration is the natural slope available towards the outside. We therefore favor a continuous gravity drain , without a pump , for maximum reliability and total silence. The tube is insulated and sleeved at the right of the drilling to avoid any condensation in the building envelope. Inside, we align the capping for a clean and easy-to-maintain finish.
3) Optimized refrigerant path
The connection path is limited to ≈ 2 to 4 m between the head and the outdoor condenser (yard side). This short length reduces pressure losses, improves seasonal efficiency and reduces the risk of refrigerant top-up. The Armaflex insulated copper tubes are protected by a UV coating on the outside.
4) External condenser and support
Space is at a premium in the Plateau's backyards. We install the compact condenser on anti-vibration brackets on the wall to free up space and keep snow accumulations away. Rubber buffers limit vibration transmission to the brick facades. Clearances around the heat exchanger are maintained to ensure airflow without recirculation.
5) Power supply and protections
We run a dedicated line from the panel, with a calibrated circuit breaker and waterproof disconnect switch near the outdoor unit. All connections are waterproof and comply with the Canadian Electrical Code . The communication cable is separated from the power to avoid interference.
6) Commissioning: vacuum, nitrogen, calibrations
-
Nitrogen test to check for leaks,
-
High vacuum < 500 microns , maintenance and rise reading,
-
Opening of valves and control of pressures/temperatures ,
-
Defrost test and fin sweep calibration ,
-
Check blowing rate, noise, remote control , and wifi if module present.
Why the Sharp R-32 wall light is suitable for Montreal plexes
Efficiency and comfort in four points
-
Variable Inverter : the machine precisely adjusts its power for stable, jolt-free comfort .
-
R-32 : improved efficiency and reduced GWP compared to R-410A.
-
Silence : noise levels among the lowest in its category, ideal for living spaces.
-
Extreme cold : maintains useful capacity for additional heating during moderate cold.
Air quality and control of currents
The position at the top of the wall and the shape of the supply flap ensure controlled stratification : the fresh air runs along the ceiling and gently descends, avoiding hitting the occupants directly. In heating mode, the turbine pushes the hot air along the length of the room to heat evenly .
Grants and Eligibility
Recent R-32 wall-mounted heat pumps with low temperature performance are generally eligible for provincial/federal grant programs (depending on the exact configuration, efficiency rating and project address). We assist our clients in verifying eligibility , preparing proof of installation and submitting applications .
Technical details and best practices applied by AirGreen
Clearances and maintenance
We leave sufficient lateral clearance on the service side of the head. In tight corners, we adapt the plate to facilitate the removal of the casing during future HVAC maintenance (turbine/coil cleaning, disinfection). On the exterior side, the unit remains accessible from the stairs or the courtyard, without blocking the exits.
Waterproofing and vapor barrier
The through-hole is sealed on both the inside and outside with high-density foam and then UV-compatible sealant . This double barrier prevents air infiltration and moisture bridges in the masonry.
Noise management
In addition to the silent blocks, we adjust the frequency ramp to limit speed spikes at night. Quiet mode is demonstrated to occupants and programmed on the remote control for rest hours.
Remote control, programming and instructions
We provide the customer with a user guide :
-
Recommended summer temperature 23–24°C to balance comfort and consumption,
-
Winter top-up setting 20–21°C (avoid too frequent cycles),
-
Filter maintenance: light vacuuming every month during periods of heavy use, quarterly washing.
Result: immediate comfort, controlled cost, respected aesthetics
After commissioning, the apartment benefits from a uniform temperature , almost imperceptible noise at low speed, and a discreet aesthetic : the head blends into the top of the wall, the capping follows a short and straight path , and the exterior remains clear. In typical use in Montreal, a well-sized R-32 wall unit allows up to 25–35% savings compared to a basic window air conditioner + electric convectors, while improving quality of life .

What would it look like at your place?
Two quick checks with real numbers: what heat costs, and what your current heaters add up to in BTU/h.
Conversion: 1 W = 3.412 BTU/h. An indication, not a load calculation: baseboards and furnaces are often stronger than the real need, and they can stay as backup. AirGreen confirms the capacity on site.

Your own project, step by step
What to do, season by season
Three habits per season for this unit. They take a few minutes and prevent many calls.
- Clean the indoor unit's filters.
- Clear leaves and debris left on the outdoor unit by winter.
- Test cooling before the first hot days.
- Clean the filters more often when the unit runs a lot.
- Keep plants away from the outdoor unit.
- Check that no water drips from the indoor unit.
- Rake the leaves around the outdoor unit.
- Test heating before the first cold days.
- Book periodic maintenance before winter.
- Keep snow away from the stand and the front of the unit.
- Let the unit defrost: it is normal.
- Never hit the ice on the fins; call us if the unit stays iced up.
Is your home ready?
Check what applies at your place. A "no" is not a refusal: it is what we sort out during the estimate.
Four statements: true or false?
It all comes down to details you have just seen.
1. In heating mode, the outdoor unit can produce water.
During defrost cycles. That water must drain away without forming ice.
2. You pick the capacity with a simple square-footage rule.
Windows, insulation, orientation and how the room is used all count. Capacity is chosen on site.
3. A multi-zone connects several indoor heads to a single condenser.
One head per room, all on the same condenser. Each room keeps its own temperature.
4. The disconnect can sit behind the patio furniture.
It must stay accessible: it is what shuts the unit off for service.
