Four-season comfort for a condo with patio door and balcony
In the Saint-Laurent district, we are installing a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump in a condo with a balcony . The indoor unit is positioned above a sliding patio door , a common configuration in modern buildings. Our goal: to provide precise, quiet, and energy-efficient heating and cooling without compromising brightness or access to the balcony.
Client context and needs
The owner wanted:

Stabilize the temperature of the living room facing outwards, subject to solar gains in summer and losses through glazing in winter .

Reduce operating costs compared to basic electric heating.

Preserve the aesthetics of the main wall and the ergonomics of opening the patio door.
After calculating the thermal loads and checking the electrical panel, we selected a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump with a power suitable for an open living area (living room/dining room/kitchen). The equipment chosen is a recent R-32 model from the Sharp residential range, compatible with extreme cold and Inverter .
Interior installation: above the patio door, optimal diffusion
Placing the unit at the top of the wall , centered on the bay window, promotes:

reduced heat stratification in winter thanks to vertical sweeping;

an effective air barrier in front of the glass surface during heat peaks;
-
even circulation in the room, without direct blowing onto the occupants.
We adjust the vanes for a wide sweep and program an automatic speed to adjust the flow to the actual need, limiting ambient noise.
Refrigeration path and condensate evacuation
The vertical technical cover runs along the right upright of the patio door: it protects the insulated copper piping , the power/communication cable and the condensate drain . The route is deliberately short (≈1.5 to 2 m) to limit pressure losses and maximize efficiency.
Drainage is by gravity towards the outside, with a constant slope and anti-drip nozzle; we install a vapor barrier at the wall passage to prevent any migration of humidity into the insulation.
Drilling, sealing and finishing
We make a single hole as close as possible to the equipment, respecting the slope of the drain. The crossing is lined with a sleeve , an elastomeric sealant on the inside and a clean collar . On the outside, the capping is UV-stable and resistant to freeze-thaw to maintain its appearance throughout the seasons.
Outdoor installation on balcony
In most condominiums with balconies, the best practice is to install the condenser :

on anti-vibration pads to prevent the transmission of low frequencies to the slab;
-
with sufficient rear clearance for air intake;
-
out of the snow removal path and protected from falling ice from the upper floor.
We add a discreet snow shear when the balcony's orientation exposes the unit to snow accumulation. A watertight disconnect is installed nearby, and the dedicated line is calibrated according to the inverter's starting currents.
Sizing and expected performance
The choice of power is based on:

the open area (living room + dining room),

the U-value of the glazing,

infiltration via the patio door,

the orientation and the presence of trees/hedges which cushion the winter wind.
The machine maintains a high COP at low temperatures and provides heating down to -25°C (or even -30°C depending on the sub-range) . In air conditioning, the dehumidification mode maintains a comfortable humidity level without overcooling.
Noise, vibrations and acoustic comfort
In addition to anti-vibration pads, we configure:

a ventilation curve adapted to evenings on the balcony (reduction of direct airflow towards the opening).

The supplied infrared controller is supplemented, if necessary, by a Wi-Fi module . We program three practical scenes:

Heatwave : priority to dehumidification to keep the room cool without excessive cold.
HVAC Maintenance and Longevity
To keep the heat pump efficient:

Clean filters every 4 to 6 weeks during peak usage;

Annual inspection : pressures, blowing temperature, electrical tightening, condition of insulation, condensate test;

Condenser clearance : no objects within 30 cm, check after snow episodes.
