A discreet and efficient installation under an exterior staircase
At AirGreen , we recently completed a Sharp ZU1 MultiZone heat pump installation in a residential building in Montreal's Saint-Laurent sector. This configuration presented a unique challenge: integrating the outdoor unit into a tight space, directly under a concrete staircase. The goal was to ensure both optimal equipment performance and a seamless visual integration, without compromising accessibility for future maintenance.
Special features of the Sharp ZU1 unit
The Sharp ZU1 is a new generation MultiZone heat pump that runs on R-32 refrigerant. It stands out for its ability to maintain stable comfort even during harsh Montreal winters , with high energy efficiency that meets the criteria of grant programs available in Quebec. Depending on the configuration chosen, it can power up to three wall-mounted indoor heads , providing precise temperature control in several rooms of the house.
Context and challenges of the project
The outdoor unit was placed on a raised metal platform to avoid direct contact with the ground and to protect the system from moisture and snow accumulation.
The passage of the refrigeration and electrical pipes required a specific wall drilling , visible on the facade, with an insulated and sealed finish to guarantee watertightness.
The main challenge was the limited height under the stairs , which required precision in the alignment of the pipes and the support.
We have also optimized cable routing by grouping the lines into a clean and secure bundle, to facilitate future maintenance.
Benefits for the customer
-
Energy efficiency : The Sharp ZU1 provides substantial savings on heating and cooling bills.
 -
Multi-zone comfort : each equipped room can be adjusted independently according to the occupants' preferences.
 -

Discreet integration : Installation under the stairs frees up outdoor space and protects the unit from the elements.
 -
Accessible subsidies : the device is eligible for government assistance programs related to high-performance heat pumps.

AirGreen Technical Advice
For homeowners considering installation in restricted areas such as staircases, balconies or open garages, we recommend:
-
The use of raised metal supports , to prevent corrosion and ensure stability.
 -
Sufficient clearance around the unit to allow good air circulation.
 -

Proper insulation of pipes to prevent performance losses and extend system life.
 -
A choice of model adapted to space constraints , like the Sharp ZU1 which fits perfectly into compact environments.

Final result
This installation in Saint-Laurent is a good example of our approach: finding the most suitable solution for each building's configuration while respecting the strictest quality standards. The client now benefits from a high-performance, sustainable and energy-efficient HVAC system , perfectly integrated into an atypical space.
