Installation of a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in Chomedey (Laval)
Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump installed on brackets in Chomedey (Laval): instrumented winter commissioning, clearances above snow, stable comfort and energy efficiency by AirGreen.

In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.
Generic illustration of this type of installation, not a survey of this job site. Tap a number.
Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.
The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.
Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.
A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.
The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.
On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.
The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.
Precision cold-weather commissioning, built to last
At AirGreen , we work every week in Greater Montreal to install high-efficiency wall-mounted heat pumps adapted to our winters. In Chomedey (Laval) , we have just commissioned a new generation Sharp ZU1 ( R-32 ), installed on wall brackets above the snow line. The intervention takes place in the middle of winter: the outdoor unit operates in a real environment, which allows us to optimize the start-up configuration, clearance management and frost protection from day one.
Building context and client objectives
The client required four-season comfort for a garden level and the main floor, with minimal exterior noise and no ground encroachment on the landscaped area. The northwest-facing rendered façade required special attention to wind reverberation and discharge air convection to avoid cold recirculation in front of the heat exchanger.
We offer a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump (R-32 family) in 12,000 or 15,000 BTU depending on the load balance. The ZU1 series is designed for extreme cold and maintains its useful capacity when the temperature drops well below -20 °C, while remaining very economical in electricity thanks to the inverter.
Visible installation details and technical choices
Support and clearances
-
Galvanized wall brackets with plates anchored in the foundation concrete.
-
Anti-vibration pads under the pads to dampen the low frequencies of the compressor.
-
Clearances are maintained on all four sides to maintain the condenser air renewal rate and facilitate maintenance.
-
Height positioned above snow accumulation and sprinklers, while still allowing access to the service.
Routes and connections
-
Shortest through- hole behind the unit to reduce pressure losses and limit exposure of refrigerant connections.
-
HVAC-class insulated copper connections, large radius elbows, flared flanges calibrated with a comparator.
-
Power and communication cable sized according to the nameplate, circuit breaker dedicated to the panel.
-
Gravity-driven condensate management on the interior side, with controlled slope; no risk of external freezing since the drain does not exit near the unit.
Commissioning and quality controls
-
Nitrogen leak test (pressure test) then deep vacuum to ≤ 500 microns, controlled vacuum maintenance to confirm absence of moisture.
-
Manifold connected during stabilized measurements (visible in the photo) in order to check the suction/discharge pressure and consistency with the manufacturer's table.
-
Checking currents , overcurrent at start-up , heat exchange and air flow ; checking the supply/return temperatures of the indoor units.
-
Setting anti-frost modes and defrost stages for winter service.
Why the Sharp ZU1 stands out in this context
High energy efficiency
The ZU1 family uses R-32 refrigerant , with reduced GWP and better volumetric capacity , allowing higher SEER/SCOP than R-410A generations. The result: controlled operating costs and frequent eligibility for assistance programs when the cold performance criteria are met.
Comfort in extreme cold
The inverter compressor and defrost logic adjust the power to maintain the setpoint without overheating . Occupants benefit from a stable temperature even during icy gusts on the northwest facade.
Silence and compactness
The ZU1 has a compact profile with optimized ventilation . Mounted on brackets, it frees up floor space , prevents shovel impacts in winter and reduces noise pollution in the immediate vicinity.
Air quality
The Sharp range is renowned for its indoor air treatment ( integrated purification technology depending on the model ), useful for people sensitive to dust and pollen when ventilation/filtration modes are used in spring and autumn.
Load study and sizing
Before any proposal, we carry out a simplified thermal assessment of the housing (surface area, insulation, orientation, windows, infiltration, use). Here, the study indicates:
-
Summer sensitive load dominated by solar inputs in the afternoon.
-
Winter load concentrated on the semi-buried garden level, where loss through foundation walls is more notable.
The sizing favors a moderate but modulating power . An overly powerful unit would cause short cycles , accelerated wear and fluctuating comfort ; conversely, an undersized unit would struggle during cold spells. The ZU1 covers the load with a reasonable margin , while dropping down in speed during mid-seasons.
Frost, snow and runoff water management
The installation on a rendered facade, partially sheltered by the overhang of the floor, requires a winter management plan :
-
Rear and side clearance to prevent recirculation of cold air during defrosting.
-
Protection of fixings and crosspieces against gutter water; if necessary, addition of a discreet deflector above the unit.
-
Simple maintenance: clear snow in front of the gate, avoid ice accumulation at the foot of the wall .
-
Customer Reminder : Never cover the unit and keep the area free of branches or debris.
Result: measured performance and immediate comfort
Upon commissioning, we note:
-
Consistent internal Delta T between intake and blowing.
-
Intensity stability after 15–20 minutes of operation; no background noise thanks to anti-vibration mounts.
-
Setpoint reached quickly in the areas served, without gusts of cold air during defrosting.
The customer benefits from economical heating in winter and precise air conditioning in summer, with a discreet noise level both outside and inside.

And at your place?
Two quick checks with real numbers: what heat costs, and what your current heaters add up to in BTU/h.
Baseboards and electric furnaces turn 1 kWh of electricity into 1 kWh of heat. A heat pump delivers more: that is its COP. At Hydro-Québec’s rate D (11.142¢/kWh above 40 kWh a day, since 1 April 2026):
Hydro-Québec: a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months.
Estimate per kWh of heat, at the chosen temperature, using the certified COP from the product page. Taxes, access charge and backup heat not included.
Conversion: 1 W = 3.412 BTU/h. An indication, not a load calculation: baseboards and furnaces are often stronger than the real need, and they can stay as backup. AirGreen confirms the capacity on site.
