Effective on a daily basis, discreet on an urban balcony: our Sharp ZU1 installation optimizes the 4-season comfort of a condo in the Southwest, while respecting the space, noise and air circulation constraints specific to Montreal buildings.
A project designed for condo living: efficiency, silence and aesthetics
Client background and objectives
In a modern building in Southwest Montreal , the owner was looking for a compact HVAC solution to boost supplemental heating during the off-season and provide stable cooling in the summer without increasing the electricity bill. The long balcony and large sliding patio door imposed passage and clearance constraints. We recommended a Sharp ZU1 (new generation R-32 ) in a mini-split configuration – the ideal combination for an indoorwall-mounted air conditioner and a small outdoor inverter condenser .
Why the Sharp ZU1 series?
-
Fine modulation inverter compressor: consistent comfort and energy savings.
-
R-32 refrigerant: reduced charge and better seasonal efficiency.
-
Plasmacluster Ion technology (air quality) on the interior side.
-
Operating range suitable for extreme cold (down to the low temperatures common in Montreal), depending on the capacity chosen.
-
Low noise levels, a major asset in co-ownership.
Expected result: a reversible system that provides heating and air conditioning , with an excellent performance/footprint ratio for a condo balcony.
Technical study and HVAC installation on balcony
Choosing an outdoor location
We positioned the Sharp condenser on the side of the balcony, near the patio door , to reduce the length of the refrigerant connections (≈ 3 m) and optimize pressure losses . The unit rests on a raised aluminum structure mechanically fixed; blue anti-vibration pads isolate the supports to limit the transmission of vibrations to the slab and the guardrail.
Points of vigilance applied:
-
Clearances respected on the front and side faces to guarantee air supply and defrosting in winter.
-
Air discharge directed away from the living areas in the immediate vicinity.
-
Sufficient height to avoid the accumulation of defrost water and terrace dust.
Route of the links and finishing
The drilling was carried out through the partition of the facade wall, as short as possible between the indoor unit and the exterior. The insulated copper pipes and the communication cable are protected by a discreet, light-colored capping , harmonized with the glass frame . This choice ensures:
-
a clean aesthetic from the inside;
-
easy access for HVAC maintenance ;
-
increased waterproofing and durability against freeze/thaw cycles.
Condensate management
In the summer, the condensate from the indoor unit drains by gravity via the slope of the drain to the outdoor outlet point, eliminating the need for a lifting pump (a source of noise and maintenance). The slope was checked with a spirit level to avoid any backflow or gurgling.
Power supply and protections
The Sharp ZU1 is connected to a dedicated circuit breaker in the condo panel, with adequate cross-section and accessible disconnect . The connections were made according to the polarity prescribed by the manufacturer, then tightened to the torque . We measured:
-
intensity in regime ;
-
phase-neutral voltages ;
-
earth leakage (safety).
Commissioning and quality controls
Vacuum stretching and refrigerant charge
After controlled crimping and flaring , we have:
-
Pulled to deep vacuum < 500 microns and stabilized the installation.
-
Checked the watertightness (micron rise test).
-
Adjusted the load according to the actual length of the lines (within the initial range included by Sharp for the ZU1).
Functional tests
-
Cold mode : control of blowing/suction ΔT , suction pressure , overheating .
-
Hot mode : validation of automatic defrosting , observation of air discharge onto the balcony.
-
Noise pollution : sound level meter measurements at 1 m and at the edge of the balcony condominium; results in line with expectations for an urban environment.
Calibration and usage tips
We have set up:
-
the setpoint and the inverter algorithm to avoid short cycles;
-
the airflow so as not to blow directly onto the interior relaxation area;
-
eco mode during periods of absence.
Concrete benefits for the owner
4-season comfort
-
In summer: stable air conditioning without drafts, thanks to the variable-speed wall-mounted air conditioner .
-
In winter and mid-season: effective heat supply , relieving the burden on electric baseboards and reducing bills .
Savings and subsidies
The Sharp ZU1 is a high-efficiency heat pump . Depending on the capacity chosen and the programs in effect, the project may be eligible for certain financial assistance in Quebec. Our team supports customers in:
-
validate the criteria ( Energy Star , cold performance according to the unit class);
-
prepare installation documents and photos ;
-
optimize BTU selection based on envelope and loads.
(Eligibility varies depending on configuration, power and current program rules for Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, North Shore and South Shore.)
Silence and respect for the neighborhood
The sound levels measured on the balcony remain low. The location and orientation limit the acoustic impact on the immediate neighbors and respect the uses of co-ownership .
Preventive maintenance: preserving performance and longevity
AirGreen Annual Routine
-
Cleaning the fan and the external battery (terrace dust).
-
Washing and disinfection of the interior exchanger (air quality + optimized Plasmacluster).
-
Checking electrical connections , condensates , line insulation .
-
Control of operating parameters (pressure, temperature, intensity).
Best practices for co-owners
-
Keep the balcony clear in front of the condenser facade (50–70 cm).
-
In winter: check that snow and ice are not obstructing air intake/discharge.
-
Change/vacuum the interior filters several times a year (depending on usage).
-
Program suitable modes (eco/absence) to maximize efficiency .
Execution details that make the difference
Finishes and durability
-
Capping screwed on properly, silicone seals at the crossings .
-
Service loops with radius respected to avoid micro-cracks due to vibration.
-
High density anti-vibration mounts under the structure to lower transmissibility .
-
Torque meter used on flare fittings; digital vacuum tank and vacuum gauge for reproducible commissioning .
Security and Compliance
-
Drillings marked to avoid conduits and structural elements.
-
Calibrated circuit breaker and disconnect within easy reach of the service.
-
Identification labels : nominal intensity, R-32 refrigerant, date and name of the AirGreen installer.
Sizing: choosing the right power (BTU)
We analyze the surface area , insulation , orientation and internal contributions to recommend the capacity (e.g. 12,000 BTU , 15,000 BTU , etc.). The correct sizing:
-
avoids short cycles ;
-
maintains high seasonal efficiency (SEER/HSPF) ;
-
extends the life of the compressor.
