Generic diagram: wall-mounted heat pump, indoor and outdoor units

In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.

Generic illustration of this type of installation, not a survey of this job site. Tap a number.

  1. Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.

  2. The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.

  3. Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.

  4. A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.

  5. The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.

  6. On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.

  7. The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.

An elegant and efficient integration into a Montreal apartment

At AirGreen , we have just completed the installation of a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in Plateau-Mont-Royal . The owners' goal: to achieve four-season comfort in a bright apartment with typical Montreal character—crownings, high windows, and access to a terrace—while preserving the aesthetics of the living areas.

The customer's need: comfort, simplicity and silence

In this open-plan accommodation (living room, reading corner and passage to the terrace), the air is easily stratified: hot in summer near the windows , cool in winter at ground level . The clients wanted:

  • Reliable heating in winter and precise air conditioning in summer .

  • A minimum noise level for reading and working peacefully.

  • A discreet installation, respecting the interior architecture and circulation.

Why the Sharp ZU1 range is a must here

The Sharp ZU1 ticks all the boxes for an urban project:

  • High efficiency with R-32 refrigerant, more efficient than older generations with R-410A.

  • Extreme cold operating range , suitable for Montreal winters.

  • Fine inverter modulation to stabilize temperature and reduce consumption.

  • Careful air treatment and gentle diffusion, appreciated in relaxation areas.

  • Small footprint and understated design that fits naturally above frames.

This range generally makes it possible to access subsidies when the efficiency criteria are met; we support our clients to verify eligibility according to the chosen capacity and the active programs in Quebec.

Interior installation: millimeter precision under ceiling drop

The positioning of the wall head has been studied to maximize air coverage without creating a direct current on the occupants:

  • High installation under a ceiling drop , at the regulatory distance from the sides and the ceiling to guarantee optimal sweeping .

  • Sufficient clearance from the window frame and the door to the terrace to avoid any recirculation of air .

  • Support anchored to uprights, with laser leveling and anti-vibration pads to maintain silence.

  • Addition of a discreet deflector (baffle) to soften the airflow directed towards the reading corner and avoid impact on the wall artwork.

Refrigeration route and management of invisible… but essential details

To ensure the installation remains visually simple and technically efficient , we have optimized each meter of line:

  • Wall crossing to the outside on the terrace side, which limits the distance to approximately 2–3 m and reduces pressure losses.

  • Capping matching the exterior coating, stainless steel screws and waterproof sealing to prevent any infiltration.

  • Gravity drainage with controlled slope, insulated to prevent condensation on interior sections.

  • Sheathed communication/control wiring and waterproof service box on the exterior side for simple and safe future maintenance.

Commissioning: AirGreen protocol

We apply a standardized procedure that makes a difference in the long term:

  1. Controlled flares and torques on the dynamometer.

  2. Deep vacuum with digital micro-manometer until stabilization.

  3. Leak test and pressure/temperature check according to manufacturer's tables.

  4. Airflow calibration and remote control settings (modes, setpoint ranges, economy functions).

  5. Usage review with occupants: good HVAC maintenance practices, filter cleaning and seasonal adjustments.

Concrete result for the occupants

From the first hours of use, owners noticed:

  • Even cooling of the living room and passage areas, without “dead” zones.

  • Responsive heating in mid-season, limiting the use of the backup system.

  • Remarkably quiet operation , even when ramping up.

  • An expected reduction in consumption compared to the old air conditioning unit alone, thanks to the higher coefficient of performance in heating mode.

Operating and maintenance tips for longevity

To maintain peak performance and impeccable indoor air quality :

  • Clean filters every 4 to 8 weeks depending on usage.

  • Maintain a stable setpoint (moderate day/night differences) in order to make the best use of the inverter .

  • Maintain clearance around the indoor head and outdoor unit (patio side) for optimal airflow .

  • Schedule annual maintenance : electrical inspection, sensors, fans, pressures and fittings.

  • In winter, if the terrace receives significant accumulations, ensure clearance around the outdoor condenser.

Challenges specific to Plateau housing and solutions implemented

Buildings in the Plateau-Mont-Royal often feature through-spaces , high openings , and access to balconies/terraces . These features bring in light but also promote stratification and solar gain . Our approach:

  • Choosing a high location to break up stratification and encourage air intake .

  • Short outward path to limit losses and simplify maintenance.

  • Treatment of finishes (baffles, discreet capping, sealing) to respect the aesthetics sought by the occupants.

When to choose a wall-mounted heat pump like the Sharp ZU1

  • Apartments, condos and duplexes where you are looking for a compact solution .

  • Need economical heating most of the winter and precise air conditioning in the summer.

  • Urban context with restricted outdoor spaces (balconies/terraces) and priority given to silence .

  • Desire to reduce energy bills while improving comfort and air quality.

Key steps to a successful AirGreen project

  1. Technical visit : surveys, constraints, assessment of flow rates and lengths.

  2. Selection of capacity (BTU) based on the actual structure — insulation, orientation, glass surfaces.

  3. Layout plan (interior/exterior) with sketches and aesthetic solutions.

  4. Certified installation , testing and delivery of a commissioning sheet .

  5. Follow-up : maintenance reminder and support for grant eligibility if applicable.

In short , the installation of this Sharp ZU1 in Plateau-Mont-Royal shows how a well-chosen and perfectly integrated wall-mounted heat pump provides stable comfort , controlled consumption and a neat visual result — exactly what many Montreal households are looking for.

Your numbers

And at your place?

Two quick checks with real numbers: what heat costs, and what your current heaters add up to in BTU/h.

Before / afterThe cost of the same heat

Baseboards and electric furnaces turn 1 kWh of electricity into 1 kWh of heat. A heat pump delivers more: that is its COP. At Hydro-Québec’s rate D (11.142¢/kWh above 40 kWh a day, since 1 April 2026):

Before · baseboards11.142¢/kWh
After · heat pump–

Hydro-Québec: a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months.

Estimate per kWh of heat, at the chosen temperature, using the certified COP from the product page. Taxes, access charge and backup heat not included.

Size checkYour baseboards, in BTU/h
–BTU/h of installed electric heat

Conversion: 1 W = 3.412 BTU/h. An indication, not a load calculation: baseboards and furnaces are often stronger than the real need, and they can stay as backup. AirGreen confirms the capacity on site.

    Frequently asked questions

What people ask us about this kind of work

    12 questions
Does a wall-mounted heat pump heat in winter?
Yes, it heats and cools. Its capacity drops in very cold weather; the operating range depends on the model and is listed on its spec sheet.
    Wall-mounted or multi-zone: how do I choose?
One wall head and one condenser outside: the direct solution for a room or an open area. For two to five rooms, a multi-zone puts one head in each room on a single condenser.
Where does the outdoor unit go?
Where it stays above the snow, clear and accessible, away from walkways. We decide it with you during the estimate.
    Are there grants?
Depending on the model and your situation, assistance programs may apply, including Hydro-Québec's LogisVert. AirGreen checks the model number before quoting an amount. See the grants.
    Do I need a permit?
Rules vary from city to city: location, distances, noise. See permits and by-laws, and we check for your address.
    How cold can it heat?
It depends on the model. According to Hydro-Québec, newer models work down to a temperature between −15 °C and −25 °C, and some cold-climate models are certified lower. The minimum temperature is on each unit's spec sheet.
    How much can I save?
Hydro-Québec says a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months. The result depends on the house, the climate and how it is used.
How is the LogisVert assistance calculated?
For ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified heat pumps, Hydro-Québec lists assistance of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heating capacity at −8 °C. AirGreen checks the exact model before quoting an amount; only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted. See the grants.
    Is it noisy?
The sound level depends on the model and is listed in decibels on each unit's spec sheet. Location matters too: when possible, we avoid putting the outdoor unit under a bedroom window.
The outdoor unit is covered in ice: is that normal?
Some frost is: the unit runs defrost cycles. Never hit the ice. If the unit stays iced up or stops heating, call us.
Does AirGreen hold the required licences?
Yes. AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subclasses 15.8 Ventilation, 15.10 Refrigeration and 16 Electricity.
