Generic diagram: wall-mounted heat pump, indoor and outdoor units

In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.

Generic illustration of this type of installation, not a survey of this job site. Tap a number.

  1. Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.

  2. The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.

  3. Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.

  4. A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.

  5. The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.

  6. On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.

  7. The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.

Discreet comfort, measurable efficiency and careful finishing: in this typical Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie home, we have integrated a Sharp ZU1 series wall-mounted heat pump to provide summer air conditioning and off-season heating, while preserving the aesthetics of the living room and the tranquility of the occupants.

A project designed for a bright and compact Montreal apartment

The living room features a double window facing the street, a cast iron radiator in the sill, period moldings and a decorative shelf. The challenge is clear: to provide an efficient HVAC system without cluttering the space or hindering natural light. The high position, close to the outside corner, allows for even air distribution and a short refrigeration path to the outdoor unit, reducing losses and facilitating HVAC maintenance .

The client's objectives

  • Stable freshness in summer, even during Montreal heat waves.

  • Additional heat in spring and autumn to delay the start-up of the central heating (existing radiator).

  • Silence and visual sobriety : the device must fit into the decor without dominating the room.

  • Scalability : possibility of adding a second head in the medium term if a room needs it.

Equipment choice: Sharp ZU1 (R-32), the balance between compactness and efficiency

The Sharp ZU1 series offers a good compromise between size, reliability and efficiency in both air conditioning and heating in cool weather. Depending on the calculated heat load, we retain a typical capacity of 12,000 to 15,000 BTU , suitable for the common living areas of Montreal plexes. The R-32 refrigerant contributes to better volumetric efficiency and a reduced environmental footprint compared to older generations.

Major advantages of the ZU1 range:

  • Fine modulation of the inverter to avoid short cycles and maintain humidity at a comfortable level in summer.

  • Low noise level at low speed, ideal for evenings or nights.

  • Easy-access filtration for simplified residential maintenance.

  • Mid-season cold weather compatibility : useful in spring/autumn to relieve the main system and reduce the bill.

About grants: Many wall-mounted heat pumps are eligible when cold weather performance and Energy Star criteria are met. We always validate the eligibility of the installed model and support the process for Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , the North Shore and the South Shore .

Installation details — precision and finishes that make the difference

Implantation of the inner head

  • Optimized ceiling height : the air intake remains clear, the air stream does not hit any shelf or molding.

  • Clearance to walls respected: the shutters can direct the flow without creating recirculation near the window.

  • Fixing on solid panel : metal anchors in the support, plate perfectly level to prevent any vibration.

Short and discreet refrigeration path

  • Direct outlet to the outside through the side wall: estimated length 2 to 4 m to the condenser. A short route means less pressure losses, no (or little) addition of refrigerant to the factory charge and better responsiveness.

  • White capping matching the walls for a neat visual integration. The insulation is continuous and UV protected , eliminating condensation in summer and thermal bridges in winter.

  • Bending radius respected: reliability of connections and lifespan of brazing.

Gravity condensate management

  • Controlled slope from the inner head tank to the outer outlet. A non-return siphon prevents odors, the outlet is protected from facade splashes.

  • In case of slope constraints in other rooms, we provide silent condensate pumps ; here, gravity is sufficient, which simplifies maintenance.

Power supply and safety

  • Dedicated circuit from panel, rating and breaker conform to Sharp nameplate.

  • External disconnection placed near the condenser for intervention safety.

  • Grounding verified and torque-controlled tightening: reliability without surprises.

Commissioning and quality controls

  1. Nitrogen test and leak test on all joints.

  2. Deep vacuum (< 500 microns) followed by a rise test to ensure the absence of humidity.

  3. Functional checks : compressor intensity, supply/return temperatures, subcooling/overheating, calibration of speeds and flaps.

  4. Comfort settings : mode programming, night setting, automatic switching and usage advice for the customer.

Aesthetic and acoustic integration in a living room

In this type of living room, the priority is not to dominate the space . The Sharp ZU1 head, with its sleek design, matches the moldings and window joinery. The noise level at low speed blends in with the ambient noise, and the orientation of the shutters avoids direct blowing on the sofa or reading corner. The radiator in place remains useful for continuous extreme cold; the heat pump, however, significantly reduces operating hours and improves comfort in mid-season.

Concrete results for the client

  • Immediate comfort : even distribution, fewer layers of heat near the ceiling, better control of summer humidity.

  • Energy savings : the inverter adjusts power to demand; in the off-season, the heat pump covers most of the needs.

  • Silence : stable wall structure, balanced fan and anti-vibration on the condenser (outside) limit any resonance.

  • Simplified HVAC maintenance : washable filters, clear access, quick annual inspection.

Deadlines, coordination and constraints resolved

  • Typical duration : one day for this format — tracing, drilling, installation, refrigeration, electricity, vacuum and start-up.

  • Access : protection of traffic, occasional tarpaulin for drilling dust, careful restoration.

  • Facade constraint : compact and discreet wall crossing on the street/backyard side; choice of an exit point that limits visibility from the outside.

  • Seasonality : Mounting is designed for snow and ice; clearances around the condenser, orientation that prevents air recirculation in defrost mode.

Practical tips for maximizing performance

Daily use

  • Stable setpoints : Avoid yo-yoing with temperature. A constant setpoint stimulates modulation and reduces consumption.

  • “Dry” mode in summer during humid periods for rapid comfort without overcooling.

  • Clean filters every 4 to 8 weeks depending on dust and the presence of animals.

Annual preventive maintenance

  • Cleaning of the internal exchanger , fan control, gentle disinfection of the condensate tray.

  • Washing the outdoor condenser (spring), checking the tightening and insulation, reading the refrigeration parameters.

  • Update settings (shutters, favorite speeds, programming) based on household habits.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Undersizing : A 9,000 BTU that is too small will run at full speed and make noise. We size the capacity based on a load calculation.

  • Obstruction of air intake by curtains, high shelves or rods. Keep a clear space around the head.

  • Condensates without slope : gravity must be ensured or replaced by a suitable pump; otherwise, there is a risk of overflow.

Your numbers

And at your place?

Two quick checks with real numbers: what heat costs, and what your current heaters add up to in BTU/h.

Before / afterThe cost of the same heat

Baseboards and electric furnaces turn 1 kWh of electricity into 1 kWh of heat. A heat pump delivers more: that is its COP. At Hydro-Québec’s rate D (11.142¢/kWh above 40 kWh a day, since 1 April 2026):

Before · baseboards11.142¢/kWh
After · heat pump–

Hydro-Québec: a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months.

Estimate per kWh of heat, at the chosen temperature, using the certified COP from the product page. Taxes, access charge and backup heat not included.

    Frequently asked questions

What people ask us about this kind of work

    12 questions
Does a wall-mounted heat pump heat in winter?
Yes, it heats and cools. Its capacity drops in very cold weather; the operating range depends on the model and is listed on its spec sheet.
    Wall-mounted or multi-zone: how do I choose?
One wall head and one condenser outside: the direct solution for a room or an open area. For two to five rooms, a multi-zone puts one head in each room on a single condenser.
Where does the outdoor unit go?
Where it stays above the snow, clear and accessible, away from walkways. We decide it with you during the estimate.
    Are there grants?
Depending on the model and your situation, assistance programs may apply, including Hydro-Québec's LogisVert. AirGreen checks the model number before quoting an amount. See the grants.
    Do I need a permit?
Rules vary from city to city: location, distances, noise. See permits and by-laws, and we check for your address.
    How cold can it heat?
It depends on the model. According to Hydro-Québec, newer models work down to a temperature between −15 °C and −25 °C, and some cold-climate models are certified lower. The minimum temperature is on each unit's spec sheet.
    How much can I save?
Hydro-Québec says a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months. The result depends on the house, the climate and how it is used.
How is the LogisVert assistance calculated?
For ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified heat pumps, Hydro-Québec lists assistance of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heating capacity at −8 °C. AirGreen checks the exact model before quoting an amount; only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted. See the grants.
    Is it noisy?
The sound level depends on the model and is listed in decibels on each unit's spec sheet. Location matters too: when possible, we avoid putting the outdoor unit under a bedroom window.
The outdoor unit is covered in ice: is that normal?
Some frost is: the unit runs defrost cycles. Never hit the ice. If the unit stays iced up or stops heating, call us.
Does AirGreen hold the required licences?
Yes. AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subclasses 15.8 Ventilation, 15.10 Refrigeration and 16 Electricity.
    Is the estimate free?
Yes. The on-site estimate is free and the quote follows within 24 hours. Book my free estimate.
