An indoor unit installed high up, with particular attention paid to the existing wall, drainage, and air distribution

This installation of a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Aquila XLTH dual-zone heat pump in Brossard illustrates an often-underestimated aspect of wall-mounted system replacement or installation projects: integrating a new unit into an already finished space, where the wall may bear traces of previous equipment, an earlier line, or work carried out over the years.

What the image reveals about the realities of the project

The Fujitsu AIRSTAGE unit is installed very close to the ceiling while leaving the necessary space for the upper air intake. The unit’s width occupies a large part of the wall section, making it clear that the location was chosen based on the room’s actual dimensions rather than a theoretical preference.

Several elements are visible:

  • an elongated wall-mounted unit;
  • a completely unobstructed air-distribution louver;
  • a doorway located below and to the left;
  • an existing interior wall with a partially marked finish;
  • an installation high enough to promote air-jet reach;
  • limited space between the top of the unit and the ceiling.

In a similar situation, we must verify precisely that the front panel can still be opened to clean the filters. A unit installed too close to the ceiling may seem discreet, but it becomes problematic if routine maintenance requires removing it.

The unit visible in the photo retains full front access. The lower flap can open freely, and the air outlet grille is not blocked by the door frame.

Why a dual-zone heat pump was suitable for this Brossard property

A dual-zone heat pump makes it possible to connect two indoor units to a single outdoor unit. This configuration is particularly well suited to homes where two spaces have different needs.

In Brossard, we frequently encounter properties with:

  • an open-concept area on the ground floor and a bedroom upstairs;
  • a very sunny living room and a more shaded room;
  • an addition that responds differently to central heating;
  • a basement that is cooler than the upper levels;
  • two distant zones that a single wall-mounted air conditioner cannot serve properly.

With a dual-zone configuration, each indoor unit can be controlled separately. The homeowner can set a different temperature in each space, adjust the fan speed, and use only the occupied zone.

Fujitsu documentation for the H series indicates that Aquila systems can combine different indoor units with 18,000, 24,000, 36,000, or 45,000 BTU/h outdoor units. The 18,000 BTU/h models can power up to two indoor units, the 24,000 BTU/h models up to three, the 36,000 BTU/h models up to four, and the 45,000 BTU/h models up to five.

In this project, the dual-zone approach made it possible to serve two areas of the house without adding more outdoor compressors.

Installing above a door: advantages and precautions

Installing a wall-mounted unit above a door can be an excellent solution when the other walls are occupied. This location offers several advantages:

  • it uses a section of wall that is rarely occupied by furniture;
  • it allows air to circulate toward the back of the room;
  • it reduces the visual impact at eye level;
  • it keeps the main walls available;
  • it can facilitate routing pipes to an exterior wall or a service passage.

However, this position also requires several checks.

The wall structure

The area above a door generally includes a lintel or reinforced framing elements. Drilling and fastening must be carried out without compromising the structure.

The clearance below

The louver must be able to open without interfering with the door frame.

Air circulation

The airflow must not be blocked by an opposite wall that is too close, nor directed into an unnecessary space.

Access for maintenance

The height should not make filter cleaning excessively difficult.

Drainage

Condensation water must be able to drain without a reverse slope or constriction.

In this installation in Brossard, the unit was placed high enough to provide good coverage, but not so high that it blocked access to its front panel.

An existing wall finish that required precise work

The visible mark to the right of the unit immediately draws attention. It may come from a previous installation, an old line-set route, equipment removal, or earlier work on the wall.

We cannot determine its exact origin from the photo alone, but it clearly illustrates a common reality in replacement projects: the wall is not always new or perfectly uniform.

When an old unit is removed, the following may remain:

  • mounting holes;
  • a difference in paint color;
  • a repaired section of drywall;
  • traces of an old line-set cover;
  • an old hole;
  • marks caused by moisture or dust.

Our role is to adapt the new installation to achieve a clean, functional result without compromising the system. When painting or finishing work remains to be done, the unit must be positioned to allow for reasonable wall repairs.

The unit itself should also not be used to conceal an unresolved problem. Water infiltration, a condensate leak, or wall damage must be identified before the area is closed up.

Drainage is particularly important for a unit installed high up

In cooling mode, the indoor unit removes moisture from the air. This moisture condenses on the coil, then flows into a drain pan before being discharged through a drain.

An installation above a door requires impeccable drainage, since a leak could reach:

  • the framing;
  • the wall;
  • the floor;
  • moldings;
  • passage surfaces;
  • nearby electrical components.

The drain must maintain a continuous slope toward its outlet. It must not be compressed behind the unit or form a pocket where water could accumulate.

During our installations, we check:

  1. the wall plate level;
  2. the unit’s position on its brackets;
  3. the drain slope;
  4. the absence of pinching;
  5. the connection to the drain pan;
  6. the final discharge;
  7. sealing the exterior opening.

A unit that appears perfectly level can still have a problem if the drain is improperly positioned. That is why we perform a drainage test before completing commissioning.

Fujitsu Aquila XLTH: a solution designed for cold-climate heating

The Fujitsu Aquila XLTH series is designed to provide heating when outdoor temperatures become very low.

The documentation provided for the H Aquila and Aquila CTEB series indicates that cold-climate units can operate in heating mode down to -26 °C. The document also mentions cooling operation up to an outdoor temperature of 50 °C for CTEB units.

This low-temperature operating capacity is relevant for Brossard and the entire South Shore, where heat pumps must cope with:

  • extended periods below zero;
  • very cold nights;
  • frost on the outdoor unit;
  • defrost cycles;
  • rapid temperature changes.

However, it should be noted that a minimum operating temperature does not automatically correspond to full rated capacity. Available heating output varies according to the outdoor temperature.

Sizing must therefore take into account:

  • heat loss from each zone;
  • insulation quality;
  • window dimensions;
  • wind exposure;
  • air infiltration;
  • ceiling height;
  • available supplementary heating;
  • of the simultaneous demand in both rooms.

The number of BTUs must be determined by the actual load

An estimate based solely on floor area can lead to an improper selection.

Two 300-square-foot rooms can have very different needs. One may face south with large windows, while the other is surrounded by heated rooms and receives little sunlight.

For each zone, we analyze, among other factors:

  • floor area;
  • air volume;
  • number of exterior walls;
  • type of glazing;
  • orientation;
  • floor;
  • insulation;
  • heat-generating appliances;
  • number of occupants;
  • room usage.

An oversized unit can cool too quickly, reduce dehumidification, and cause short cycling. An undersized unit may run continuously without reaching the setpoint.

In a dual-zone system, you must also check the compressor’s total capacity and how it will be distributed when both indoor units are operating at the same time.

Authorized Fujitsu combinations for two zones

Page 2 of the Fujitsu document presents the permitted combinations for outdoor units intended for two zones.

For the AOUH18KWAS2 and AOUH18KWAH2 models, the listed nominal combinations include:

  • 7,000 + 7,000 BTU/h;
  • 7,000 + 9,000 BTU/h;
  • 7,000 + 12,000 BTU/h;
  • 7,000 + 15,000 BTU/h;
  • 9,000 + 9,000 BTU/h;
  • 9,000 + 12,000 BTU/h;
  • 9,000 + 15,000 BTU/h;
  • 12,000 + 12,000 BTU/h.

These tables validate equipment compatibility, but Fujitsu specifies that they should not be used alone to determine system capacity. The manufacturer recommends its Design Simulator software for selecting H-series AIRSTAGE equipment.

This clarification is important. A combination may be technically permitted without being suitable for the thermal loads of a particular building.

Why connected capacity above 100% does not produce more

Some combinations allow indoor units whose total nominal capacity exceeds the nominal capacity of the outdoor compressor to be connected.

Fujitsu documentation states that a multizone outdoor unit can accept connected capacity of up to 130%, depending on the system. However, it specifies that exceeding 100% does not increase the actual production capacity.

Consider a simple example: two 12,000 BTU/h indoor units total 24,000 BTU/h. If they are connected to an 18,000 BTU/h outdoor compressor in an approved combination, the system does not suddenly produce 24,000 BTU/h.

When both zones require high capacity simultaneously, the available capacity is divided between them.

This design can be effective when peak demands do not occur at the same time. However, it must be planned correctly.

Independent controls with one limitation to know

Each indoor unit can be controlled separately. The owner can choose a different temperature for each zone.

However, the Fujitsu document specifies that the system provides heating and cooling, but not simultaneously.

In other words:

  • both zones can heat;
  • both zones can cool;
  • one zone can operate while the other is off;
  • one zone cannot heat while the other is cooling.

This rule is normal for a conventional multizone system using a single outdoor circuit. It should be explained to the owner to avoid mode conflicts in spring or fall.

The role of the inverter compressor

Fujitsu documentation states that AIRSTAGE Aquila systems use an inverter-driven compressor.

This technology adjusts the compressor speed according to demand. The system can reduce its output when a single zone requires a minor adjustment and increase its speed when demand is higher.

This modulation contributes to:

  • stabilize the temperature;
  • reduce repeated starts;
  • reduce sudden fluctuations;
  • better meet the needs of a single active zone;
  • improve acoustic comfort;
  • adapt consumption to actual needs.

In a dual-zone installation, this flexibility is particularly useful. The compressor does not have to operate constantly at full capacity when only a small room requires heating or cooling.

Good air distribution despite the location near the ceiling

The unit visible in the photo is installed in the upper part of the wall. This position generally allows better air distribution.

In cooling mode, cool air gradually descends. In heating mode, the louver should be directed downward to prevent warm air from accumulating near the ceiling.

Positioning the unit above the door can allow the airflow to cross the room without immediately hitting a piece of furniture.

During commissioning, we check:

  • the louver opening fully;
  • the direction of the airflow;
  • the absence of obstructions;
  • airflow range;
  • the noise level;
  • the room’s response;
  • the temperature reached in the occupied zone.

A properly sized but poorly oriented unit can make a room uncomfortable. Comfort therefore depends not only on capacity, but also on the positioning and adjustment of the louver.

Commissioning: an essential step after installation

A heat pump installation is not complete when the unit is secured to the wall.

We must then complete a series of technical checks:

  • inspecting the refrigerant connections;
  • leak test;
  • vacuuming;
  • confirming vacuum stability;
  • opening the valves;
  • checking the electrical connections;
  • validating communication between the zones;
  • cooling test;
  • heating test;
  • checking the drainage;
  • checking the remote controls;
  • explanation of how it works to the customer.

Vacuuming removes air and moisture from the lines. A simple purge is not sufficient. Residual moisture can contaminate the circuit and reduce long-term reliability.

Mistakes to avoid when installing above an opening

Installing the unit too close to the ceiling

The upper air intake may be restricted, and the front panel may become difficult to open.

Drilling without checking the door lintel

The structure above an opening must be respected.

Neglecting the condition of the existing wall

Any trace of moisture or incomplete repair must be inspected before installation.

Using the unit to conceal a problem

A previous infiltration or leak must not be hidden behind a new unit.

Incorrectly directing the louver

The airflow should reach the room rather than the upper part of the door.

Reducing the drain slope

Drainage must remain continuous, even if the route is more complex.

Forgetting access to the filters

Regular maintenance should remain simple.

Maintaining a dual-zone heat pump

A dual-zone heat pump includes two indoor units. Each unit has its own filters, heat exchanger, and drain.

Homeowners should:

  • clean the filters regularly;
  • check that the louvers are clean;
  • watch for signs of condensation;
  • listen for unusual noises;
  • keep the outdoor unit clear;
  • remove leaves and snow;
  • have the drains inspected as needed.

The unit installed near the ceiling will require a small stepladder for filter cleaning. This access must remain clear. Do not later add a cabinet or decorative element that would prevent the front panel from opening.

A Fujitsu installation adapted to an existing Brossard home

This project demonstrates that a successful installation must adapt to the building as it actually is. The wall was not a new, uniform surface. The location had to accommodate a door, an existing finished section, and limited space near the ceiling.
