Generic diagram: wall-mounted heat pump, indoor and outdoor units

In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.

  1. Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.

  2. The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.

  3. Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.

  4. A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.

  5. The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.

  6. On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.

  7. The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.

Comfort and Reliability for All Seasons

In the heart of Dollard-des-Ormeaux, we had the pleasure of installing a Tosot LomoPlus UltraHeat DoubleZone Heat Pump for a family looking to enhance their comfort through the intense summers and freezing winters typical of our beloved Greater Montreal area. This high-performance, energy-efficient unit promises a cozy home environment even when outdoor temperatures plummet to -30°C, a necessity for our Canadian climate.

The Project: A Unique Installation Story

Every HVAC installation comes with its own story, and this one was no different. Our clients were eager to improve their home’s efficiency without compromising on aesthetics. With the Tosot LomoPlus UltraHeat, they found the perfect fit. The unit's 24,000 BTU compressor, paired with two sleek 12,000 BTU indoor units, delivers seamless temperature control across two distinct zones, ensuring that every corner of the house remains comfortable.

We began the project by carefully assessing the home layout and ensuring we had a strategic plan to place the indoor units for optimal airflow. The goal? To minimize energy consumption while maximizing heating and cooling performance.

Why the Tosot LomoPlus UltraHeat?

For this installation, we chose the Tosot LomoPlus UltraHeat for several standout features. The unit isn’t just about temperature regulation; it’s about offering the ultimate in comfort and efficiency. Here are some compelling reasons why this model shines:

  • Extreme Cold Heating Capability: Even at temperatures as low as -30°C, the Tosot LomoPlus provides consistent heating. This ensures that no matter how frigid Montreal winters become, warmth isn’t just a hope—it’s a guarantee.
  • Energy Efficiency: With a remarkable 23.0 SEER rating, this unit delivers high efficiency, lowering energy costs while keeping the home environment at just the right temperature.
  • LogisVert Grant: To top it off, the model qualifies for a substantial $2,148 LogisVert Grant from Hydro-Québec, making it an even smarter investment.

The Power of Dual Zones

One of the biggest advantages of the DoubleZone system is its ability to control two separate areas independently. Our clients opted to have one indoor unit in the living area and another in the master bedroom. This setup provides flexibility, allowing them to maintain perfect temperatures in both spaces without wasting energy.

  • Zone 1: Living Room Comfort
The living room, a space where the family gathers, is kept at an ideal temperature all year round. The 12,000 BTU unit is quiet yet powerful, with an almost whisper-like sound pressure level of 60.0 dB(A) outside, making the indoor experience serene and pleasant.
  • Zone 2: Master Bedroom Tranquility
The second 12,000 BTU unit was installed in the master bedroom, ensuring restful nights. With optional WiFi controls, the homeowners can easily adjust settings from their smartphones, perfect for those chilly nights when you want to stay warm under the covers.

Installation Details and Challenges

Our team faced a few obstacles unique to this Dollard-des-Ormeaux property. The exterior wall structure required precise mounting to ensure stability and efficiency of the outdoor unit, especially considering Montreal's weather fluctuations. Using custom brackets, we secured the 36.2 x 15 x 31.1-inch outdoor unit, designed to withstand heavy winds and snow buildup.

  • Durability in Design: The outdoor unit is protected by a base with a built-in heating element, preventing ice from forming on the coils. This not only extends the unit's lifespan but also guarantees efficiency throughout harsh winter months.
  • Compact and Aesthetic: Both indoor and outdoor units have a compact design that seamlessly blends into the home’s exterior and interior without being obtrusive.

High-Tech Features for Modern Living

The Tosot LomoPlus UltraHeat isn't just about power; it’s packed with intelligent features for maximum convenience:

  • Two-Stage Compressor: Engineered for efficiency, this feature ensures optimal performance regardless of the season.
  • Intelligent Defrost System: Gone are the days of unnecessary defrost cycles. This heat pump uses smart defrost technology, activating only when needed, saving energy and reducing service calls.
  • Self-Diagnosis Capability: Should an issue arise, the built-in diagnostic system helps technicians quickly identify and resolve problems, reducing downtime.
  • I Feel Technology: This unique feature senses the temperature directly from the remote control, ensuring more accurate climate control based on where you are in the room.

A Commitment to Customer Satisfaction

We believe in backing our installations with a commitment to quality and service. That’s why we offer the best warranty in the industry: a 10-year parts warranty, with the option to extend labor coverage to 10 years. This gives our customers peace of mind, knowing they are covered for the long haul.

Environmental Responsibility

Utilizing R-410A refrigerant, the Tosot LomoPlus UltraHeat is also a greener choice, aligning with our company’s commitment to sustainability. It delivers exceptional efficiency without depleting the ozone layer, making it a responsible choice for environmentally-conscious homeowners.

The steps

How it goes, from the first call to the end

The main steps of this kind of job at AirGreen. Every house has its quirks: the estimate brings them out.

Step 1 of 9The on-site estimate

We look at the room, the outside wall, the line route and where the outdoor unit will go. That is where the capacity gets chosen.

Your numbers

And at your place?

Two quick checks with real numbers: what heat costs, and what your current heaters add up to in BTU/h.

Size checkYour baseboards, in BTU/h
–BTU/h of installed electric heat

Conversion: 1 W = 3.412 BTU/h. An indication, not a load calculation: baseboards and furnaces are often stronger than the real need, and they can stay as backup. AirGreen confirms the capacity on site.

    Through the seasons

    Frequently asked questions

What people ask us about this kind of work

    12 questions
Does a wall-mounted heat pump heat in winter?
Yes, it heats and cools. Its capacity drops in very cold weather; the operating range depends on the model and is listed on its spec sheet.
    Wall-mounted or multi-zone: how do I choose?
One wall head and one condenser outside: the direct solution for a room or an open area. For two to five rooms, a multi-zone puts one head in each room on a single condenser.
Where does the outdoor unit go?
Where it stays above the snow, clear and accessible, away from walkways. We decide it with you during the estimate.
    Are there grants?
Depending on the model and your situation, assistance programs may apply, including Hydro-Québec's LogisVert. AirGreen checks the model number before quoting an amount. See the grants.
    Do I need a permit?
Rules vary from city to city: location, distances, noise. See permits and by-laws, and we check for your address.
    How cold can it heat?
It depends on the model. According to Hydro-Québec, newer models work down to a temperature between −15 °C and −25 °C, and some cold-climate models are certified lower. The minimum temperature is on each unit's spec sheet.
    How much can I save?
Hydro-Québec says a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months. The result depends on the house, the climate and how it is used.
How is the LogisVert assistance calculated?
For ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified heat pumps, Hydro-Québec lists assistance of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heating capacity at −8 °C. AirGreen checks the exact model before quoting an amount; only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted. See the grants.
    Is it noisy?
The sound level depends on the model and is listed in decibels on each unit's spec sheet. Location matters too: when possible, we avoid putting the outdoor unit under a bedroom window.
The outdoor unit is covered in ice: is that normal?
Some frost is: the unit runs defrost cycles. Never hit the ice. If the unit stays iced up or stops heating, call us.
Does AirGreen hold the required licences?
Yes. AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subclasses 15.8 Ventilation, 15.10 Refrigeration and 16 Electricity.
    Is the estimate free?
Yes. The on-site estimate is free and the quote follows within 24 hours. Book my free estimate.
