The tour

Take a tour of the installation

Each number is a point we check on site. Switch between summer and winter to watch air and heat move.

Generic diagram: wall-mounted heat pump, indoor and outdoor units

In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.

Generic illustration of this type of installation, not a survey of this job site. Tap a number.

  1. Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.

  2. The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.

  3. Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.

  4. A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.

  5. The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.

  6. On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.

  7. The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.

The job

An HVAC installation designed to maximize outdoor space without compromising performance

At AirGreen, every HVAC installation is designed according to the building’s characteristics, the environment, and the owner’s expectations. This recent installation of a Hitachi airHome Multi multi-zone heat pump in Boucherville, on Montreal’s South Shore, is an excellent example.

The client wanted to efficiently cool and heat two separate zones of the residence while maintaining a functional outdoor layout. The site presented several constraints: a wooden deck immediately to the left of the planned location, a raised foundation, limited circulation space, and the need to preserve the rear façade’s appearance.

Our team therefore proposed a dual-zone Hitachi airHome Multi multi-zone heat pump, known for its reliability, flexibility, and energy efficiency.

Why this Hitachi airHome Multi heat pump was the best choice

The Hitachi airHome Multi system is designed to power multiple indoor units from a single outdoor unit, allowing independent control of each living space. According to the manufacturer’s specifications, this series can connect up to five different indoor units, depending on the building’s needs.

For this Boucherville residence, a dual-zone configuration perfectly met the occupants’ needs.

The main advantages of this installation include:

  • Independent control of each room
  • Optimized energy consumption
  • Reduced outdoor footprint
  • Very quiet operation
  • Use of environmentally friendly refrigerant R32
  • Compatibility with several types of indoor units (wall-mounted, ducted, console, cassette)

For a single-family home, this approach provides excellent comfort throughout the year without multiplying the number of outdoor units.

An installation adapted to the site's constraints

When observing the installation, several elements demonstrate the care taken by our technicians.

The outdoor unit was installed on sturdy wall brackets equipped with blue anti-vibration pads, allowing us to:

  • to prevent snow from accumulating on the ground during winter;
  • to protect the equipment from moisture;
  • to effectively reduce vibration transmission to the structure;
  • to maintain clear space beneath the unit for easier maintenance.

This installation method is particularly appreciated in the residential areas of Boucherville, where Quebec winters can result in significant snow accumulation.

It is also worth noting that the unit is sufficiently far from the rear wall to ensure good airflow while remaining close to the building to limit the length of the piping.

Particular attention paid to aesthetics

At AirGreen, we believe that a heat pump installation should be as attractive as it is high-performing.

In this project:

  • the refrigerant lines are grouped in a perfectly aligned vertical line set cover;
  • the entire installation remains discreet against the brick wall;
  • the positioning allows for circulation around the deck;
  • the outdoor unit does not interfere with access to or use of the yard.

Even details such as the clearance beneath the unit were carefully considered to facilitate seasonal cleaning and extend the system's lifespan.

The challenges encountered during this installation

Each residence has its own unique characteristics.

In this project, several elements required careful planning:

Limited space between the deck and the wall

The immediate presence of the wooden structure considerably limited the fastening options.

Our installers therefore took precise measurements so that:

  • the service opening remains accessible;
  • the recommended clearances are respected;
  • the fan can operate without restriction.

Protection against winter conditions

In Boucherville, snow accumulation can quickly reach the base of homes.

The wall-mounted installation prevents the unit from being buried in snow during the winter while protecting its mechanical components.

Vibration reduction

The vibration-damping mounts installed beneath the unit help reduce resonance and improve occupant comfort.

This type of detail often makes all the difference in the long term.

The technical features that set the Hitachi airHome Multi apart

The Hitachi airHome Multi system features several advanced technologies that contribute to its efficiency.

These include:

Inverter technology

Power modulation enables the compressor to continuously adjust its operation to maintain a stable temperature while reducing electricity consumption.

FrostWash technology

Hitachi incorporates its exclusive FrostWash technology, which automatically cleans the indoor coil through a freeze-and-defrost cycle to reduce contaminant buildup and maintain optimal airflow.

Enhanced filtration

Depending on the type of indoor unit selected, the system can include:

  • PM2.5 activated carbon filter;
  • ViroSense S filtration;
  • odor reduction;
  • improved indoor air quality.

Independent zone control

Each room can be adjusted independently:

  • temperature;
  • fan speed;
  • scheduling;
  • individual operation.

Thus, one bedroom can be cooled while another room remains off, providing greater comfort and energy savings.

A system perfectly suited to Quebec's climate

Although this multi-zone system is designed to operate efficiently down to -20 °C in heating mode, it remains an excellent solution for homeowners looking to replace several air conditioners or older electric systems while enjoying superior comfort. The manufacturer also announces efficiency ratings of up to 23.0 SEER2 and 7.85 HSPF2-5, depending on the selected configuration.

For many homes in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore, this combination offers an excellent balance between performance and energy savings.

Your numbers

What would it look like at your place?

Two quick checks with real numbers: what heat costs, and what your current heaters add up to in BTU/h.

Size checkYour baseboards, in BTU/h
–BTU/h of installed electric heat

    Conversion: 1 W = 3.412 BTU/h. An indication, not a load calculation: baseboards and furnaces are often stronger than the real need, and they can stay as backup. AirGreen confirms the capacity on site.

    Frequently asked questions

    What people ask us about this kind of work

    12 questions
    Does a wall-mounted heat pump heat in winter?
    Yes, it heats and cools. Its capacity drops in very cold weather; the operating range depends on the model and is listed on its spec sheet.
    Wall-mounted or multi-zone: how do I choose?
    One wall head and one condenser outside: the direct solution for a room or an open area. For two to five rooms, a multi-zone puts one head in each room on a single condenser.
    Where does the outdoor unit go?
    Where it stays above the snow, clear and accessible, away from walkways. We decide it with you during the estimate.
    Are there grants?
    Depending on the model and your situation, assistance programs may apply, including Hydro-Québec's LogisVert. AirGreen checks the model number before quoting an amount. See the grants.
    Do I need a permit?
    Rules vary from city to city: location, distances, noise. See permits and by-laws, and we check for your address.
    How cold can it heat?
    It depends on the model. According to Hydro-Québec, newer models work down to a temperature between −15 °C and −25 °C, and some cold-climate models are certified lower. The minimum temperature is on each unit's spec sheet.
    How much can I save?
    Hydro-Québec says a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months. The result depends on the house, the climate and how it is used.
    How is the LogisVert assistance calculated?
    For ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified heat pumps, Hydro-Québec lists assistance of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heating capacity at −8 °C. AirGreen checks the exact model before quoting an amount; only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted. See the grants.
    Is it noisy?
    The sound level depends on the model and is listed in decibels on each unit's spec sheet. Location matters too: when possible, we avoid putting the outdoor unit under a bedroom window.
    The outdoor unit is covered in ice: is that normal?
    Some frost is: the unit runs defrost cycles. Never hit the ice. If the unit stays iced up or stops heating, call us.
    Does AirGreen hold the required licences?
    Yes. AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subclasses 15.8 Ventilation, 15.10 Refrigeration and 16 Electricity.
    Is the estimate free?
