Installation of a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 500 wall-mounted heat pump in Henryville on the South Shore

In Henryville, a compact installation where the indoor unit’s positioning makes all the difference

In Henryville, on Montreal’s South Shore, we completed an installation of a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 500 wall-mounted heat pump in a residence where the indoor unit needed to integrate neatly into an already furnished room while ensuring effective air distribution and adequate access for future maintenance.

The photo taken after our work clearly illustrates a detail that is often underestimated in a wall-mounted heat pump installation: it is not enough to mount the unit on an available wall. Its location directly affects air circulation, perceived comfort, the appearance of the room, the routing of the refrigerant lines, and even how easily the system can be serviced over the years.

In this Henryville project, the Fujitsu indoor unit was installed high on the wall, near the ceiling and close to a window. We also routed the connections to the right of the unit, with a discreet finish that follows the upper part of the wall. The result is intentionally understated: the heat pump takes up very little usable space in the room and avoids interfering with the furniture.

This installation also showcases a new generation of Fujitsu products using R-32 refrigerant, integrated into the AIRSTAGE Altair 500 lineup. According to the Fujitsu technical documentation provided for this series, the family includes 9,000, 12,000, 18,000, 24,000, 30,000, and 36,000 BTU capacities, with performance and dimensions suited to different residential needs.

Why the location near the ceiling was particularly important

A wall-mounted indoor unit generally draws in air through its upper section before treating it and redistributing it throughout the room. This means that the space around the top of the unit must be carefully evaluated during installation.

In the photo of our project in Henryville, the unit is installed very high to preserve as much usable wall space as possible. However, this type of configuration requires more attention than an installation where there is a huge, completely unobstructed wall.

We must specifically verify that the unit can breathe properly, remains accessible for filter removal, and is not affected by any architectural element that could disrupt its airflow. The adjacent window also requires us to consider the airflow direction so that conditioned air is not unnecessarily directed against an obstacle.

A heat pump can be excellent on paper yet provide disappointing comfort if its indoor unit is poorly positioned. At AirGreen, we therefore consider location selection an integral part of system sizing.

A clean piping exit rather than an improvised route

Another visible detail of this installation is the horizontal routing of the connections to the right of the indoor unit.

Behind this simple appearance are several components: refrigerant copper pipes, a communication cable and power supply depending on the configuration, insulation, and condensate drainage management. Their route must be planned before drilling the wall.

Fujitsu Altair 500: a range designed for rooms of various sizes

The Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 500 is not a single fixed-capacity heat pump. It is a series comprising several single-zone systems.

Fujitsu technical documentation lists the following nominal cooling capacities: 9,000, 12,000, 18,000, 22,000, 30,000, and 33,000 BTU/h, associated respectively with the 09KPAS1, 12KPAS1, 18KPAS1, 24KPAS1, 30KPAS1, and 36KPAS1 families. The corresponding nominal heating capacities are 10,000, 14,000, 18,000, 24,000, 30,000, and 34,000 BTU/h.

The exact capacity of the unit installed in Henryville cannot be read from the provided photo, and we prefer never to infer a BTU rating simply from the apparent size of a wall-mounted unit. Two externally similar units may have different capacities and electrical specifications.

This is precisely why, when working on an HVAC project, we base our recommendations on the exact model reference, the building’s dimensions, insulation, exposure, number of floors, window area, and interior layout rather than on an approximate square-footage rule.

An R-32 heat pump with Inverter technology

One of the important technical changes in the Altair 500 range concerns its use of R-32 refrigerant.

Fujitsu states in its documentation that R-32 has a global warming potential of 675, compared with 2,088 for R-410A, representing an announced reduction of 68% according to the reference provided by the manufacturer. The brand also points out that R-32 equipment requires less refrigerant while maintaining the expected heating performance.

For the homeowner, this refrigerant change does not alter the system’s day-to-day operation. It remains a reversible wall-mounted heat pump, capable of cooling in summer and heating during the cold season.

Its Inverter compressor is particularly important for comfort. Unlike a system that operates continuously according to an on-off logic at full capacity, an Inverter unit can modulate its operation according to demand.

As the indoor temperature approaches the setpoint, the heat pump can reduce its output rather than triggering abrupt, repetitive operating cycles. This modulation helps stabilize the temperature and makes operation much quieter.

Heating down to -15 °C according to the Altair 500 technical data sheet

For a heat pump installation in Quebec, the minimum heating temperature is obviously an important specification.

The Altair 500 technical data sheet indicates a heating operating range of -15 °C to 24 °C for all models in the series.

This information is essential when advising a homeowner in Henryville or elsewhere on the South Shore. Not all Fujitsu heat pumps necessarily serve the same climate-related purpose. Some ranges are specifically designed to operate at much lower temperatures.

Altair 500 must therefore be selected in the right context. We always analyze the expected role of the heat pump: primary heating, supplementary heating, primarily summer cooling, or reducing the use of another heating system.

Installing a heat pump is not just about selecting a number of BTUs. You need to understand how that capacity will be used when it is +5 °C, -5 °C, or -15 °C outside.

Indoor operation that can be as low as just 19 dB(A)

Sound level is particularly important when a wall-mounted heat pump is installed in a living room, bedroom, office, or open living space.

On certain Altair 500 models, Fujitsu indicates indoor operation as low as 19 dB(A) in quiet mode. The specification sheet shows 19 dB(A) in cooling mode for the 9,000 and 12,000 BTU models. Higher capacities produce greater airflow and therefore have different minimum ratings.

This detail explains why sizing is also related to acoustic comfort. Installing a unit that is far too large for a small room is not necessarily advantageous. The volume of air moved, system behavior, and temperature distribution must all be considered.

ProCore coils and a design focused on durability

The Altair 500 series documentation also mentions ProCore copper coils, designed with an approach aimed at increased corrosion resistance. Fujitsu adds a heat exchanger with Hydro Fin fins intended to improve corrosion resistance and coil durability.

For us, HVAC installers, these factors are important because a system's lifespan does not depend solely on the compressor. The condition of the heat exchangers, drainage, filter cleanliness, and general maintenance all play a role.

In the Montreal area and on the South Shore, outdoor equipment is exposed to rain, snow, freezing conditions, defrost cycles, and various contaminants in the environment. A proper installation must therefore consider the machine as a whole that will have to operate for many seasons, rather than simply as a new appliance installed on the day of installation.

Several pipe diameters depending on capacity

Here is a particularly useful technical point for homeowners replacing an old heat pump who want to know whether the existing piping can be reused.

According to Fujitsu, piping dimensions vary depending on the capacity of the Altair 500:

  • the 09KPAS1 and 12KPAS1 models use a 1/4 in. liquid line and a 3/8 in. gas line;
  • The 18KPAS1 and 24KPAS1 models use 1/4 in. liquid and 1/2 in. gas lines;
  • the 30KPAS1 and 36KPAS1 models use 3/8 in. liquid and 5/8 in. gas.

This is one of the reasons why we advise against assuming that a new heat pump can automatically be connected to the lines from an older unit.

Before an installation or replacement, we check the diameter, condition, length, routing, and compatibility of the lines with the new system.

Up to 20, 30, or 50 metres of piping depending on the model

The Altair 500 series also offers valuable flexibility when the outdoor unit cannot be placed directly behind the indoor unit.

The 9,000 and 12,000 BTU models allow up to 20 m, or approximately 66 ft of piping. The 18,000 and 24,000 models go up to 30 m, or approximately 98 ft, while the 30,000 and 36,000 models can reach 50 m, approximately 164 ft, depending on the conditions and requirements specified in the manufacturer’s documentation.

In a complex building, this option can make a huge difference. It sometimes allows us to place the compressor in a much more logical location, rather than sacrificing aesthetics simply to shorten the refrigerant line by a few feet.

In the case of our Henryville installation, the visible section near the ceiling demonstrates this principle: we first plan the piping route so that the result is technically reliable and visually coherent.

A 208–230 V power supply and a circuit breaker that depends on the capacity

The series operates at 208 to 230 V, 60 Hz, single-phase, but the circuit breaker amperage depends on the selected capacity.

The Fujitsu specifications indicate 15 A for the 09, 12, and 18 KPAS1 models, 20 A for the 24KPAS1 model, and 30 A for the 30 and 36KPAS1 models.

During our installations, we therefore never choose a circuit breaker based solely on habit or the previous equipment. We verify the exact requirements of the model being installed, as well as the building’s electrical configuration.

This is particularly important in older homes in Henryville and several municipalities on the South Shore, where the electrical panel may already be under considerable load.

What the photo teaches us about a proper wall-mounted installation

The photo of this project shows something that technical specifications cannot explain: the difference between a heat pump that is simply installed and one that is integrated into the room.

The unit is placed in an area that does not monopolize an entire wall. It remains elevated, its airflow stays unobstructed, and the connections are routed neatly to the side.

These decisions are made on site. An identical installation would not necessarily be recommended in another home, even with the same Fujitsu heat pump.

A window might be higher. A beam could block the pipe routing. The slope required for the drain might require a different direction. The exterior wall could contain a structural element that changes the location of the opening. The future placement of a cabinet or television could also change the best option.

That is why a professional HVAC installation is always tailored to the actual building.

What we take away from this Fujitsu Altair 500 installation in Henryville

The model selection must follow the building, not the other way around

A Fujitsu Altair 500 offers several interesting advantages: Inverter technology, heating and cooling operation, R-32 refrigerant, a relatively compact wall-mounted design, several available capacities, and advanced control options.

Fujitsu specifically mentions possible Wi-Fi connectivity with a compatible WLAN adapter and the AIRSTAGE Mobile app, as well as several integration and control options. The backlit wireless remote is also included with the indoor unit according to the brochure.

However, our role at AirGreen is first and foremost to determine whether these characteristics actually suit the project.

For a property in Henryville, we assess the floor area and room layout, as well as the insulation, windows, heat loss, backup heating needs, possible location of the outdoor unit, and electrical panel capacity.

A common mistake: choosing solely based on the number of square feet

It is tempting to say that a certain capacity automatically corresponds to a given area. In practice, this reasoning is incomplete.

An older house with large windows and average insulation may have very different needs from a newer residence of the same size.

Similarly, a very open two-story room does not have the same thermal behavior as a floor made up of several enclosed bedrooms.

We also check the unit's response to commands, the operation of the louvers, air circulation, and the system's overall performance.

This invisible part is often what distinguishes an installation designed to operate immediately from a HVAC installation designed to remain reliable.

Future maintenance starts on the day of installation

The heat pump shown in our photo from Henryville is installed near the ceiling. This configuration is very common, but it also highlights the importance of planning for maintenance.

The filters must remain accessible. The indoor heat exchanger must be able to be cleaned. The drain pan and blower wheel may eventually require service.

When we install a wall-mounted unit, we are already thinking about the person who will need to maintain it several years later.

A clean filter, a well-maintained indoor coil, and a clear drain contribute to airflow, humidity control, and system efficiency.
