Installation of a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 500 wall-mounted heat pump in Noyan: a clean, discreet integration for year-round comfort

In Noyan, a Fujitsu Altair 500 installation where the choice of location matters as much as the heat pump

During this installation in Noyan, our objective at AirGreen was not limited to mounting a new wall-mounted heat pump and turning it on. A successful HVAC installation must bring together several elements at once: effective air distribution, positioning suited to the room’s layout, a clean finish, quiet operation, and sufficient accessibility for future maintenance.

The result visible in the photo precisely illustrates this approach. We installed a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 500 high on the wall, directly beneath the ceiling mouldings. This positioning allows the unit to project air into the room without taking up living space or interfering with the layout. Despite the presence of a window and curtain rod nearby, the unit remains visually well integrated and retains the necessary clearance around its front panel and air outlet.

One detail is particularly revealing of the quality of the finish: no refrigerant piping, cable, or condensate drain is visible on the portion of the wall shown in the photo. The focus therefore remains on the Fujitsu unit itself rather than on the technical components of the installation.

This heat pump is part of the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 500 H single-zone series, a range comprising systems from 9,000 to 36,000 BTU/h in nominal cooling capacity, depending on the model. Fujitsu documentation also indicates the use of R-32 refrigerant, Inverter technology, and heating capacity down to -15 °C for this series.

Why this wall-mounted installation works particularly well in this room

An indoor unit installed near the ceiling generally benefits from a favorable position for air circulation. However, it is important not to consider height alone.

Before a wall-mounted heat pump installation in Noyan, we must also assess:

  • the natural direction in which the air can move;
  • the proximity of doors and openings;
  • the presence of curtains, blinds, and furniture;
  • the required clearances around the unit;
  • the possible route for the refrigerant piping;
  • safe condensate drainage;
  • the location of the outdoor unit;
  • the total length of the refrigerant line;
  • accessibility for cleaning the filters and HVAC maintenance.

In this installation, the unit is mounted high enough to keep the wall clear while remaining accessible from the front. We also maintained clear separation between the heat pump and the curtain rod on the right.

This type of detail is important. An indoor unit positioned too close to a curtain may experience partial obstruction of its air intake or discharge. Over time, this can reduce comfort and make operation less consistent.

An AIRSTAGE Altair 500 heat pump designed for heating and cooling

The Fujitsu Altair 500 is not simply a wall-mounted air conditioner with a heating function added. It is a true Inverter heat pump, designed to modulate its output rather than operate solely according to an on-off cycle.

Inverter technology adjusts the compressor’s output according to the building’s actual needs. When the indoor temperature approaches the setpoint, the heat pump can reduce its output instead of shutting down completely and restarting a few minutes later.

For the homeowner, this generally means more stable operation and a more consistent indoor temperature.

The Fujitsu Altair 500 series data sheet lists six capacities:

09KPAS1: 9,000 BTU/h nominal cooling capacity
12KPAS1: 12,000 BTU/h
18KPAS1: 18,000 BTU/h
24KPAS1: 22,000 BTU/h
30KPAS1: 30,000 BTU/h
36KPAS1: 33,000 BTU/h

Nominal heating capacities range from 10,000 to 34,000 BTU/h, depending on the model.

The exact capacity of the pictured unit cannot be confirmed from the visible front panel alone; we therefore avoid arbitrarily assigning a BTU rating to this installation without seeing the nameplate or complete model number.

Energy efficiency varies according to the selected capacity

Sizing is one of the most important steps when installing a wall-mounted heat pump.

Installing the model with the highest BTU rating is not automatically an improvement. An oversized unit may quickly reach the requested temperature without necessarily providing the optimal modulation and dehumidification desired during milder periods.

Conversely, an undersized unit may have to operate intensively during the coldest days or periods of significant heat.

Depending on the selected capacity, the Altair 500 series lists HSPF2 values ranging from 21.0 to 26.0 BTU/hW in the technical data sheet provided. The models therefore do not have exactly the same energy profile. The choice should be made by considering the building, the area actually served, insulation, sun exposure, fenestration, and room layout.

At AirGreen, we prefer to size an HVAC installation according to the actual need rather than choosing a capacity simply because it appears to offer an additional margin.

Heating down to -15 °C

For a residence in Noyan, winter performance is obviously an important consideration.

Fujitsu indicates a heating operating range of -15 °C to 24 °C for the six capacities in the Altair 500 range presented in the technical data sheet.

This data must be understood correctly: the minimum operating temperature does not mean that all models deliver their full nominal capacity at -15 °C. Available capacity varies with the outdoor temperature, as it does for any air-source heat pump.

This also distinguishes the Altair 500 from certain Fujitsu series specifically designed for even more advanced extreme-cold performance. For a homeowner comparing several Fujitsu heat pumps in Quebec, it is therefore preferable to consider the operating temperature, as well as the capacity actually available at low temperatures and the building’s heating requirements.

R-32: a significant technical change in this Fujitsu generation

The Altair 500 series uses R-32 refrigerant.

According to Fujitsu’s documentation, the global warming potential listed for R-32 is 675, compared with 2,088 for R-410A, corresponding to a 68% reduction in GWP according to the reference used by the manufacturer. Fujitsu also indicates that its R-32 systems require less refrigerant while maintaining the desired heating performance.

For us HVAC installers, this development also affects handling practices, job-site preparation, and the procedures used during installation.

Refrigerant is never a secondary detail. A high-quality system can lose a significant portion of its performance if the piping is improperly prepared, the connections are inadequate, or evacuation is poorly performed.

Piping dimensions that vary by Altair 500 model

Another technical point often overlooked when replacing an old heat pump concerns the diameter of the copper lines.

In the Fujitsu Altair 500 lineup, the dimensions are not identical for all capacities.

According to the technical data sheet:

  • The 9,000 and 12,000 BTU models use 1/4 in. liquid and 3/8 in. gas lines;
  • The 18,000 and 24,000 BTU models use 1/4 in. liquid and 1/2 in. gas lines;
  • The 30,000 and 36,000 BTU models use 3/8 in. liquid and 5/8 in. gas lines.

The maximum piping lengths also increase from 66 ft for the 9,000 and 12,000 BTU models, to 98 ft for the 18,000 and 24,000 BTU models, and then up to 164 ft for the 30,000 and 36,000 BTU models.

This explains why we never recommend assuming that old piping can automatically be reused simply because a heat pump was already installed there.

The diameter, condition of the copper, previous refrigerant, line lengths, and installation compliance must be verified.

What this Fujitsu installation in Noyan concretely demonstrates about the quality of an HVAC project

A clean-lined indoor unit that does not dominate the room

The photo of this installation highlights one of this series’ practical qualities: its design remains relatively discreet once installed.

The slightly rounded white front panel bears only the Fujitsu and AIRSTAGE inscriptions. The control panel and indicator lights are grouped on the right side. The lower louver opens to direct the airflow, while the rest of the front remains visually clean.

In this room in Noyan, the unit fits naturally beneath the moldings and follows the wall’s horizontal lines.

This result is particularly important in bedrooms, living rooms, or rooms whose finishing is already complete. Homeowners generally do not want a new heat pump installation to give the impression that industrial equipment was added afterward.

As low as 19 dB on certain capacities

Noise is another important consideration for a wall-mounted unit installed in a room occupied daily.

The series documentation indicates indoor operation as low as 19 dB(A) in quiet mode on the 9,000 and 12,000 BTU models. The higher capacities have different minimum values: 26 dB(A) for the 18,000 BTU model, 31 dB(A) for the 24,000 BTU model, and 32 dB(A) for the 30,000 and 36,000 BTU models.

This is a good example of why appliances with equivalent capacity must be compared. Simply saying that an “Altair 500 operates at 19 dB” would be incomplete: this value applies to certain sizes and ventilation conditions.

We place a great deal of importance on this detail when advising our clients in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, the South Shore, and municipalities such as Noyan.

ProCore coils and Hydro Fin protection

Fujitsu also highlights two features related to the durability of the indoor unit.

The series uses ProCore copper coils, described as being designed with high-corrosion-resistance copper. The heat exchanger also features Hydro Fin fins, intended to improve corrosion resistance.

These details are particularly relevant from a longevity perspective, but they do not replace maintenance.

A wall-mounted heat pump must maintain good airflow to function properly. Washable filters should be inspected and cleaned regularly, and more thorough cleaning of the evaporator, fan wheel, and drain pan may become necessary over the years.

Wi-Fi: available through a compatible accessory

The series also offers advanced control options.

Fujitsu indicates compatibility with the AIRSTAGE mobile app when a compatible USB WLAN adapter is installed. Several optional controllers and interfaces are also presented in the documentation, including Wi-Fi solutions and interfaces that enable integration with BACnet and Modbus protocols.

However, an important distinction must be made between “Wi-Fi compatible” and “Wi-Fi necessarily built in as standard.”

Depending on the configuration purchased, an accessory may be required.

A power supply that must match the selected capacity

Electrical requirements also change with the size of the unit.

The Altair 500 systems shown operate at 208–230 V, 60 Hz, single-phase. The Fujitsu document specifies a 15 A circuit breaker for the 9,000, 12,000, and 18,000 BTU models, 20 A for the 24,000 BTU model, and 30 A for the 30,000 and 36,000 BTU models.

That is why a thorough estimate should not examine only the wall where the indoor unit will be installed.

We also need to know:

Where is the electrical panel located?

The length of the electrical run affects the work required.

Is the available capacity sufficient?

An available space in the electrical panel does not necessarily guarantee that a new load can be added without verification.

Which model will actually be installed?

The required circuit breaker depends directly on the selected capacity.

This early verification helps avoid unpleasant surprises on the day of installation.

Energy Star and subsidies: the exact model number is essential

The Altair 500 document shows several ENERGY STAR classifications, some of which are associated with cold climates or other criteria depending on the model. However, the designations are not identical for all six capacities.

For a subsidy application in Quebec, we therefore avoid concluding that a heat pump is eligible solely because the name “Fujitsu Altair 500” appears on the quote.

The exact combination of the indoor and outdoor models must be verified, along with the certification applicable at the time of the application.

In the provided document, the combinations are identified in particular as follows:

ASUH09KPAS + AOUH09KPAS1
ASUH12KPAS + AOUH12KPAS1
ASUH18KPAS + AOUH18KPAS1
ASUH24KPAS + AOUH24KPAS1
ASUH30KPAS + AOUH30KPAS1
ASUH36KPAS + AOUH36KPAS1.

For our AirGreen projects, this verification is part of the important information to confirm before presenting potential savings based on financial assistance.

Common errors we want to avoid with a wall-mounted installation

A good heat pump cannot compensate for a poor installation.

Among the errors that can compromise a project, we pay particular attention to incorrect sizing, an indoor unit placed too close to an obstacle, an improper drainage slope, refrigerant piping of an inadequate diameter, a poorly designed condensate drain, an unsuitable outdoor support, and commissioning performed too quickly.

In an installation like this one in Noyan, the final result must be visually clean, but the invisible part of the work remains just as important.

The quality of the refrigerant connections, evacuation, leak testing, drainage, and heating and cooling tests largely determine what happens after our technicians leave.

Why we document our real installations

At AirGreen, our installations in Noyan, Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore allow us to compare equipment in real-world situations rather than relying solely on a specification sheet.

A heat pump may have excellent performance ratings, but every home presents its own constraints: available height, window placement, exterior walls, building orientation, distance between units, electrical panel, drainage, and the homeowner’s expectations regarding noise and appearance.

This Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 500 installation in Noyan represents exactly the type of result we strive for: a unit properly integrated into its surroundings, easy access for the user, unobstructed air distribution, and a finish that does not turn the wall into a network of exposed cables and pipes.

For a homeowner currently comparing a Fujitsu heat pump, an R-32 wall-mounted heat pump, or various HVAC systems available in the Montreal area, the best unit is not necessarily the one with the most impressive specifications. It is the one whose capacity, configuration, and installation genuinely match the building.

With a range from 9,000 to 36,000 BTU, Inverter modulation, R-32, multiple control options, and a compact design, the Fujitsu Altair 500 series offers several possible configurations. The essential task is then to select the right one and install it properly.
