In Béthanie, a Fujitsu Orion XLTH installed with a specific objective: preserving its performance when winter becomes truly demanding
Installing a wall-mounted heat pump in Béthanie is not simply a matter of mounting an outdoor unit and connecting it to a wall-mounted unit. In this part of the Montérégie region, equipment selection, its positioning, clearance from the ground, and the quality of every connection directly affect the heating available when temperatures drop.
For this installation, we worked with a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH, a range of wall-mounted heat pumps specifically designed for heating in cold climates. In the photo of our installation, one detail immediately stands out: the outdoor unit is not placed directly on the balcony or on a simple slab. We installed it on a raised metal support, with support points beneath the unit and significant clearance beneath its lower tray.
This choice is particularly relevant in Quebec. A heat pump operating in heating mode periodically produces water during its defrost cycles. In winter, this water can freeze around or beneath the unit. An installation that is too low can then encourage ice accumulation, which may eventually interfere with drainage, airflow, or the unit’s operation.
The configuration visible in Béthanie provides more space beneath the unit while maintaining a compact and clean installation.
Fujitsu’s technical documentation identifies the AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH, H Orion CTEB series as a single-zone range available in several capacities, with heating advertised down to -26 °C, Inverter technology, R-32 refrigerant, built-in Wi-Fi, and equipment specially adapted to cold regions.
What we can actually identify about this installation
Based on the photographed installation, several characteristics are clearly visible:
- a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE outdoor unit bearing the R32 designation;
- a location on a balcony or terrace of a residential building;
- installation of the heat pump on an elevated aluminum stand rather than directly on the ground;
- anti-vibration mounts under the unit's feet;
- an outdoor electrical disconnect installed on the brick wall nearby;
- a compact layout that maintains access around the equipment;
- a route for the connections to the building running along the wall;
- an arrangement that keeps the heat pump away from the lower level of the balcony, which becomes particularly relevant when there is snow or ice.
However, the photo does not make it possible to read the nameplate and therefore confirm with certainty whether it is the 9,000, 12,000, 14,500, 18,000, or 22,000 BTU/h nominal cooling version. We prefer not to arbitrarily assign a capacity to an installation when the exact model number is not visible.
This distinction is important because the specifications of the Orion XLTH range vary significantly depending on the selected capacity.
Fujitsu Orion XLTH: performance that is not based solely on the number of BTUs
When choosing a wall-mounted heat pump in Béthanie, looking only at its nominal cooling capacity provides an incomplete picture of its performance.
The range documented by Fujitsu includes the 09KZAH1, 12KZAH1, 15KZAH1, 18KZAH1, and 24KZAH1 models. Their nominal cooling capacities are respectively 9,000, 12,000, 14,500, 18,000, and 22,000 BTU/h. At nominal heating capacity, they increase respectively to 12,000, 16,000, 18,000, 21,600, and 25,200 BTU/h.
This difference between nominal cooling capacity and heating capacity is particularly relevant for a Quebec home. A heat pump is used for cooling for a few months, but it may be called upon to provide heat for a much larger portion of the year.
The Inverter technology also allows the compressor to modulate its output instead of simply running at full capacity and then shutting off. Fujitsu indicates that this modulation contributes to faster temperature stabilization and more consistent comfort.
For our installations in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, the South Shore, and more remote municipalities such as Béthanie, this behavior is particularly useful during the transitional days of fall and spring. A properly sized machine can operate at reduced capacity rather than cycling on and off frequently.
Down to -26 °C: a decisive feature in Béthanie
The series documentation indicates a heating operating range of -26 °C to 24 °C for all five capacities presented. Cooling, meanwhile, can operate within a published range of -10 °C to 50 °C.
This low-temperature operating capacity largely explains why an Orion XLTH is an attractive option for an installation in Béthanie.
However, two concepts must be distinguished: a unit may continue operating at a certain outdoor temperature without necessarily delivering exactly its rated capacity under all conditions. That is why we always examine low-temperature heating data rather than relying solely on a minimum temperature stated in a brochure.
Fujitsu's figures also show interesting performance at very low temperatures. Depending on the capacity, the series can still provide a significant percentage of its rated capacity at -15 °C, -21 °C, and -26 °C. For example, the 12KZAH1 model is listed at 138% of its rated capacity at -15 °C, 124% at -21 °C, and 102% at -26 °C, according to the reference conditions used by Fujitsu.
This type of information is much more useful for evaluating a heat pump intended for Quebec than a simple “cold climate” label.
The raised stand: a small element that can have a major impact in winter
For this installation in Béthanie, we paid particular attention to the outdoor unit's support.
The Fujitsu unit is installed several dozen centimeters above the balcony surface. This configuration helps limit the risk of the underside of the equipment quickly becoming surrounded by compacted snow or ice.
Fujitsu also specifies that the Orion XLTH series outdoor unit includes a base pan heater designed for extremely cold climate regions.
However, the base pan heater and the raised stand serve two different purposes. The former helps the equipment handle winter conditions at the level of its bottom pan. The latter physically creates the necessary space around and beneath the unit.
In an HVAC installation, the equipment and the way it is installed must therefore be considered together.
Why avoid placing an outdoor unit too close to the ground?
During heating, the outdoor coil becomes cold, and frost may gradually form on it. The heat pump then automatically runs defrost cycles.
When the frost melts, the water must be able to drain freely. If the unit is installed too low, especially in a location where snow is rarely cleared, a mass of ice can gradually form beneath the machine.
We therefore try to anticipate this scenario during installation rather than wait for a problem to arise in the middle of January.
A compact outdoor unit that makes certain residential installations easier
The configuration of this project also illustrates the value of a relatively compact outdoor unit.
We had limited space between a brick wall, a large window, and the available balcony area. The goal was to keep the installation accessible without turning the area into a tangle of pipes, cables, and supports.
According to the Fujitsu data sheet, the outdoor units for the 9,000, 12,000, and 15,000 capacities have a published width of 799 mm, a height of 632 mm, and a depth of 290 mm. The 18,000 and 24,000 versions also use an outdoor unit measuring 799 mm wide and 632 mm high in the documentation provided.
A compact machine is nevertheless subject to the clearances specified by the manufacturer. On a balcony, it is never enough simply to find a place where the unit “fits.” You must also consider airflow, future maintenance, and service access.
Why the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH is a particularly appealing solution for a wall-mounted heat pump in Quebec
R-32: a new refrigerant used in this Fujitsu generation
The logo R32 is clearly visible on the front of the photographed outdoor unit.
Fujitsu specifies the use of R-32 refrigerant for this range, to which the manufacturer attributes a lower global warming potential than R-410A. The documentation compares a GWP of 675 for R-32 with 2088 for R-410A, representing a stated reduction of 68%.
For the homeowner, this also means that installation and maintenance must be carried out using procedures and equipment suited to the refrigerant being used. At AirGreen, we take the refrigerant into account when planning a heat pump installation, not only when maintenance or repairs become necessary.
TRÈS2 efficiencies that can exceed 30 depending on capacity
The series’ efficiency is one of its most appealing features.
The Fujitsu technical data sheet gives the following TRÈS2 values:
- 09KZAH1 : 33,1
- 12KZAH1 : 30,5
- 15KZAH1 : 27,5
- 18KZAH1 : 25,5
- 24KZAH1 : 24,0
The Region V CPSC2 values range from 9.4 to 10.7, depending on the model. The units in this fact sheet are also listed with ENERGY STAR, ENERGY STAR Cold Climate, and ENERGY STAR Most Efficient ratings.
It is important to remember that performance changes with capacity. Therefore, two heat pumps both bearing the name Orion XLTH should not automatically be presented with the same HSPF2.
That is precisely why we always associate efficiency data with the exact model number when preparing a proposal.
As low as 23 dB indoors
Acoustic comfort deserves as much attention as heating capacity.
For the 9,000 and 12,000 BTU models, the documentation indicates an indoor sound level as low as 23 dB(A) in quiet mode. The 15,000 BTU model is rated at 26 dB(A), while the 18,000 and 24,000 BTU versions are rated at 30 dB(A) in this mode.
Outdoors, the published values range from 46 to 49 dB(A) in cooling mode, depending on the model.
For a heat pump installed on a balcony or near a window, as in our Bethany project, the outdoor unit’s sound level becomes particularly relevant. The quality of the supports and the mechanical stability of the installation are also important to prevent unnecessary vibration transmission to the structure.
Integrated Wi-Fi and several control options
The Orion XLTH series also includes integrated Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling remote monitoring and control through the AIRSTAGE mobile app, according to Fujitsu documentation.
Wired controllers and various interfaces are also available as options, particularly for more advanced applications.
For a home, the main benefit is generally the ability to adjust settings remotely. For more complex projects, Fujitsu also provides integration options with BACnet and Modbus, expanding the possible applications in certain residential or building-management environments.
ProCore coils designed for better corrosion resistance
The series documentation also mentions ProCore copper coils with high corrosion resistance in the indoor unit.
This type of detail is rarely the first thing a homeowner considers when comparing several wall-mounted heat pumps. However, the design of the heat exchangers, component protection, and accessibility for maintenance are important factors when evaluating a system that should operate for many years.
An installation must comply with the piping diameters specified for the exact model
Another technical point that is often overlooked concerns the refrigerant piping.
The smaller capacities in the range do not necessarily use the same diameters as the larger ones. According to the Fujitsu specifications:
- the 09KZAH1 and 12KZAH1 use 1/4 in. liquid and 3/8 in. gas;
- the 15KZAH1 uses 1/4 in. liquid and 1/2 in. gas;
- the 18KZAH1 and 24KZAH1 use 3/8 in. liquid and 5/8 in. gas.
This is an excellent example of why we never base a heat pump replacement solely on the fact that existing piping is already in place.
An existing line may appear to be in excellent condition while having a size that is incompatible with the new unit. The diameter, length, elevation difference, internal condition of the lines, and previously used refrigerant must be considered.
The available piping lengths provide some flexibility
Fujitsu also publishes different maximum piping lengths according to capacity.
The 9,000 and 12,000 models can reach up to 25 m, the 15,000 up to 30 m, while the 18,000 and 24,000 are advertised up to 50 m, provided that the manufacturer's requirements are met.
This flexibility can be particularly useful for certain installations in Montreal, Laval, or Longueuil, especially in condos, townhouses, and buildings where it is impossible to position the outdoor unit directly behind the indoor unit.
This does not mean, however, that a longer line is preferable. When we can maintain a simple, clean, and technically sound route, we generally favor that approach.
Errors we seek to avoid when installing a wall-mounted heat pump
Our field experience shows that an excellent unit can provide a poor experience if it is installed incorrectly.
Among the points that deserve particular attention, we check the equipment sizing, airflow around the outdoor unit, the height of the equipment relative to snow, drainage, mechanical support, vibrations, piping compatibility, the quality of the refrigerant connections, the electrical supply, and accessibility for future maintenance.
The support visible in our Bethany installation illustrates this philosophy well: certain decisions made during the few hours of an installation will have consequences throughout all the winters that follow.
Electrical capacity also varies by model
All Orion XLTH models in this range operate at 208-230 V, 60 Hz, single-phase, but the specified circuit breaker rating varies.
The 09KZAH1 and 12KZAH1 models are listed with a 15 A circuit breaker, while the 15KZAH1, 18KZAH1, and 24KZAH1 versions are rated at 20 A.
This detail once again demonstrates why a site visit or technical assessment is useful before confirming an installation. The electrical panel's capacity and the existing configuration must be taken into consideration before the work begins.
In the photographed project, the outdoor disconnect is installed immediately next to the heat pump, against the brick wall, creating a visually orderly result and facilitating access to the equipment's disconnect device.
An installation in Bethany that sums up our approach at AirGreen
This Fujitsu wall-mounted heat pump installation in Bethany is visually simple, but several technical decisions are behind that simplicity.
We wanted an outdoor unit that was solidly supported, well clear of the ground, accessible, and cleanly installed within the available space. We also wanted to retain the advantages specific to the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH: heating down to -26 °C according to the manufacturer's data, Inverter technology, quiet operation, R-32 refrigerant, Wi-Fi control, and very good energy performance depending on the selected capacity.
The result is an installation suited not only to Quebec summers, but especially to the months when a cold-climate heat pump must demonstrate its true value.

A good HVAC installation is therefore measured not only by whether the heat pump starts up after commissioning. It is measured by its ability to remain efficient, stable, accessible, and properly installed season after season.
