Installation of a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH wall-mounted heat pump in L’Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève, Montreal

A balcony installation where the available space required a compact and perfectly organized solution

At Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève, we completed an installation of a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH wall-mounted heat pump in a configuration that required much more precision than a conventional ground-level installation.

The photo of this project clearly shows the context: the outdoor unit is installed on a raised balcony, directly beneath a large window, immediately beside a patio door, a brick wall, and a passage used by the occupants. The space is relatively narrow, meaning that the condenser’s positioning had to be carefully considered before work even began.

We chose an installation on an elevated metal support, parallel to the wall and compact enough to preserve circulation on the balcony. The refrigerant lines are grouped behind the unit and reach the building quickly, limiting the visible length of the connections and allowing for a much more discreet finish.

This installation is an excellent example of our approach at AirGreen: adapting the HVAC solution to the building rather than trying to fit the building into a standardized installation method.

The Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH, single-zone wall-mounted series, is designed for heating in cold climates. Fujitsu indicates a heating operating range down to -26 °C, the use of R-32 refrigerant, an Inverter compressor, and a base pan heater designed for very cold weather conditions.

An elevated outdoor unit for a very specific reason

The metal support visible beneath the heat pump serves several purposes.

On a concrete balcony, we avoid placing the unit directly on the slab whenever possible when additional clearance provides a real benefit. Here, the structure creates an open area beneath the condenser.

This clearance is particularly useful for:

  • water drainage during defrost cycles;
  • keeping the unit above small accumulations of snow;
  • cleaning the area beneath the heat pump;
  • future access for HVAC maintenance;
  • precise leveling of the unit;
  • maintaining a clean and organized installation.

In an area such as L’Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève, a heat pump used for heating must be installed with January in mind from the day it is installed in summer.

An outdoor unit operates differently in winter than a simple air conditioner. During heating, the outdoor coil can accumulate frost, and the machine periodically runs defrost cycles. Water then collects beneath the unit. If the heat pump is too low or directly surrounded by ice, this situation can become problematic.

Preserving the balcony without sacrificing the unit’s clearances

The photograph also shows how efficiently the space had to be used.

The heat pump is installed near the wall, but its front remains clear so the fan can properly discharge air. The unit is not placed in the center of the balcony, which would have considerably reduced the passageway.

We had to consider several elements simultaneously:

The patio door

The unit could not interfere with opening or passage.

The large window

The heat pump’s position had to respect the existing architecture while avoiding an unnecessarily bulky installation.

The brick wall

The brick column naturally limits the available width and defines part of the equipment area.

The balcony furniture

Even if the furniture can be moved, a permanent HVAC installation must remain compatible with the actual use of the space.

Service access

We must always think about the next technician who will need to inspect, clean, or repair the unit. Installing a machine in an inaccessible location may seem acceptable on the day of installation, but it quickly becomes a problem a few years later.

Why the Fujitsu Orion XLTH’s design is helpful for this type of project

The Fujitsu specification sheet indicates that the outdoor units in the series are approximately 799 mm wide, 632 mm high, and approximately 290 mm deep.

This relatively limited depth is particularly useful for a balcony installation.

On the 09K, 12K, and 15K models, the outdoor unit weighs approximately 39 kg (86 lb). The 18K and 24K models weigh approximately 53 kg (117 lb).

However, compactness does not mean that we can place the heat pump just anywhere. We must still comply with the airflow and access requirements specified for the equipment.

A range of five capacities for different needs

The documented Fujitsu Orion XLTH series comprises five main configurations:

  • 09KZAH1
  • 12KZAH1
  • 15KZAH1
  • 18KZAH1
  • 24KZAH1

The rated cooling capacities are listed as 9,000, 12,000, 14,500, 18,000, and 22,000 BTU/h, depending on the model. In rated heating, they respectively increase to 12,000, 16,000, 18,000, 21,600, and 25,200 BTU/h.

The exact capacity of the unit shown in the photo cannot be confirmed from this view alone, and we deliberately avoid making it up.

The choice of capacity must be based on the actual building.

For a property in L’Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève, we analyze in particular:

  • the area to be heated and cooled;
  • insulation;
  • the number and size of windows;
  • the home's orientation;
  • the interior layout;
  • ceiling height;
  • the floor of the home;
  • heat loss;
  • how air will be able to circulate from the wall-mounted unit.

A larger unit is not automatically a better unit.

Low-temperature performance is particularly important in Quebec

The Orion XLTH series is interesting because Fujitsu provides detailed low-temperature data.

All models in the range shown are rated to operate in heating mode down to -26 °C.

The manufacturer also provides the percentage of maximum heating capacity available at -15 °C, -21 °C, and -26 °C.

For example, for the 12K model, Fujitsu indicates:

  • 138 % of the rated reference capacity at -15 °C;
  • 124 % at -21 °C;
  • 102 % at -26 °C.

For the 15K model, the published data are:

  • 140 % at -15 °C;
  • 126 % at -21 °C;
  • 109 % at -26 °C.

This type of information is much more relevant to a Quebec homeowner than looking only at cooling efficiency.

A heat pump can deliver excellent summer performance while being much less effective when temperatures drop significantly. At AirGreen, we therefore look at winter performance before recommending a heat pump intended to make a serious contribution to heating.

High seasonal efficiency depending on capacity

The Fujitsu specifications show SEER2 values ranging from 24.0 to 33.1, depending on the model.

More specifically:

  • 09K : 33.1 SEER2
  • 12K : 30.5 SEER2
  • 15K : 27.5 SEER2
  • 18K : 25.5 SEER2
  • 24K : 24.0 SEER2

The HSPF2 Region V values range from 9.4 to 10.7.

These figures help compare the different capacities, but they should never be considered separately from the installation.

An excellent heat pump can lose some of its appeal if:

  • it is improperly sized;
  • the condenser lacks airflow;
  • the piping is not compliant;
  • the drainage is poorly installed;
  • the connections are inadequate;
  • the unit is located in a difficult-to-access area.

Why this project in L’Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève is a good example of a successful HVAC installation in a dense residential setting

A short, visually discreet line route

One of the details we particularly appreciate about this installation is the routing of the lines.

Behind the outdoor unit, we can see the refrigerant line set grouped together before entering the building. Rather than running the lines along a long section of wall or balcony, we chose an entry point very close to the machine.

This approach helps reduce:

  • the amount of visible piping;
  • unnecessary changes in direction;
  • balcony clutter;
  • the risk of snagging;
  • the costs associated with additional outdoor lengths.

However, a short installation must always comply with the minimum lengths required by Fujitsu.

The documentation specifies a minimum length of 3 m (10 ft.) for the 09K, 12K, and 15K models, and 5 m (16 ft.) for the 18K and 24K models.

Piping sizes vary from one model to another

The Orion XLTH series does not have a single piping size for all capacities.

Fujitsu states:

  • 09K : 1/4 in. liquid and 3/8 in. gas
  • 12K : 1/4 in. liquid and 3/8 in. gas
  • 15K : 1/4 in. liquid and 1/2 in. gas
  • 18K : 3/8 in. liquid and 5/8 in. gas
  • 24K : 3/8 in. liquid and 5/8 in. gas

This becomes particularly important during a replacement.

We regularly meet homeowners who want to keep the old lines “because they are already installed.”

The question is not simply whether they exist.

We must check:

  1. their diameter;
  2. their length;
  3. their interior condition;
  4. their physical condition;
  5. their compatibility with the new machine;
  6. their compliance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

The R-32 visible directly on the machine

The marking R32 is visible on the outdoor unit installed in L’Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève.

Fujitsu states in its documentation a global warming potential of 675 for R-32, compared with 2,088 for R-410A, representing a reported reduction of 68%.

The brochure also states that R-32 models require less refrigerant while maintaining high heating performance.

For us, this also means working with the procedures and equipment suited to this type of refrigerant.

Inverter technology to avoid on-off operation

The Fujitsu Orion XLTH's Inverter compressor adjusts its operation according to demand.

This modulation is important because a home does not constantly require the heat pump's maximum capacity.

When a stable temperature is reached, the system can reduce its output rather than always operating at full capacity.

This helps provide:

  • a more consistent indoor temperature;
  • fewer complete on-off cycles;
  • greater comfort;
  • quieter operation;
  • energy consumption adapted to actual demand.

Indoor sound levels as low as 23 dB(A)

For certain models in the series, Fujitsu indicates indoor operation as low as 23 dB(A) at the quiet speed.

The units offer several fan speed levels, including:

  • high;
  • medium-high;
  • medium;
  • medium-low;
  • low;
  • quiet;
  • automatic.

This flexibility is useful in a living room or bedroom, particularly in a condo where occupants are often relatively close to the indoor unit.

Built-in Wi-Fi and remote control

Fujitsu documentation also mentions built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, with remote monitoring through the AIRSTAGE app.

This feature can adjust the temperature when no one is home or prepare the home before returning.

For some homeowners, this feature quickly becomes part of their daily use of the heat pump rather than simply a technological add-on.

Defrosting: an essential aspect to plan for from the time of installation

Defrosting is often misunderstood by homeowners who switch from an air conditioner to a cold-climate heat pump.

When a heat pump is heating, the outdoor unit becomes cold. Moisture can condense and freeze on the coil.

The system must then perform a defrost cycle.

The Fujitsu brochure specifically mentions:

  • an automatic defrost function;
  • a base pan heater;
  • a design intended for extremely cold climates.

This is precisely why the space beneath the unit shown in our installation is important.

A heat pump installed too low can end up surrounded by a mass of ice during the winter if the defrost water is not properly managed.

Mistakes we want to avoid when installing on a balcony

A balcony installation requires precision.

Among the most common mistakes we seek to avoid:

  • place the heat pump directly in the passageway;
  • install the unit too close to the ground;
  • block the fan;
  • positioning the heat exchanger too close to an obstruction;
  • forgetting about defrost water;
  • running the lines unnecessarily across the entire façade;
  • installing the unit in a location inaccessible for servicing;
  • using existing piping without checking it;
  • choosing a capacity without analyzing the home’s needs.

These details may seem secondary at the time of purchase, but they become very important after several winters.

An installation designed for today and the years to come

In the final photo, the installation appears relatively simple: a Fujitsu unit on a bracket, a few lines, and an entry point into the building.

That is precisely what we strive for.

A good installation should not give the impression of having been complicated. The complexity should be resolved during the planning stage.

In this installation in L’Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève, we achieved an arrangement that:

  • respects the available space;
  • preserves the balcony passage;
  • raises the outdoor unit;
  • keeps the connections grouped together;
  • makes future access easier;
  • blends cleanly into the existing architecture.

But the equipment is only part of the result.

What makes the difference in an installation like the one in L’Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève is how we used the space: an elevated condenser, an installation parallel to the wall, a clear passage, and lines grouped as close to the building as possible.
