A balcony installation where the available space, height, and building surroundings dictated every detail
In Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Montreal, we completed this installation of a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH wall-mounted heat pump in a setting that is highly representative of urban HVAC projects: an outdoor unit installed on a balcony, limited space between the masonry and the façade, a large nearby window, and several architectural elements already present around the selected location.
The job-site photograph immediately shows the challenge. The Fujitsu outdoor unit is positioned on a raised metal bracket, directly on the balcony’s concrete slab. A brick wall borders the space on the left. Behind the equipment are the building façade, a large window, and an existing wall grille. In front of the machine, we had to preserve the clearance required for the fan to operate while avoiding unnecessary use of the balcony’s usable area.
This is exactly the type of project where proper HVAC installation in Montreal depends as much on planning as on the equipment itself.
The finished installation appears compact and straightforward. However, before achieving this result, we must consider airflow, support stability, refrigerant line routing, drainage, vibrations, future maintenance, and how the heat pump performs when the outdoor temperature drops well below freezing.
A Fujitsu Orion XLTH well suited to a Montreal residential project
The installed machine belongs to the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH lineup, also identified as the Orion CTEB series in the manufacturer’s documentation.
This is a family of single-zone wall-mounted heat pumps offered in several capacities. Fujitsu presents 09KZAH1, 12KZAH1, 15KZAH1, 18KZAH1, and 24KZAH1 configurations.
The nameplate visible in the photo is not legible enough to identify the precise capacity of this Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve unit without ambiguity. We therefore prefer not to invent a BTU rating based on the equipment’s visual dimensions.
However, the range includes nominal cooling capacities of 9,000, 12,000, 14,500, 18,000, and 22,000 BTU/h, with corresponding nominal heating capacities of 12,000, 16,000, 18,000, 21,600, and 25,200 BTU/h. The Fujitsu technical sheet also indicates a heating operating range down to -26 °C for the various capacities in this series.
For a home in Montreal, this feature is much more important than it may seem at the time of purchase. We rarely install a heat pump solely to cool a home for two or three months a year. Our clients generally want to benefit from efficient electric heating during a significant part of the fall, winter, and spring.
Why the raised stand is particularly relevant on this balcony
The photo shows that the outdoor unit was not placed directly on the slab.
We used a metal ground stand to create additional clearance beneath the heat pump cabinet.
In a Quebec installation, this height serves several purposes.
First, it keeps the unit away from the surface where water, snow, or ice may accumulate. It also facilitates clearance beneath the machine during defrost cycles.
When a heat pump provides heating in cold weather, its outdoor coil can frost over. The system then temporarily reverses its operation to defrost the coil. The resulting water must be able to drain properly.
On a concrete balcony like the one in Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, this issue deserves particular attention because water can subsequently freeze on the slab if conditions are favorable.
A base heater designed for very cold climates
Fujitsu states that the outdoor unit in the Orion XLTH range includes a standard base heater designed for extremely cold climate regions, in addition to an automatic defrost function. The documentation also mentions the Inverter compressor and a low-noise outdoor operating mode.
The base heater is an interesting feature for Quebec, but it does not replace proper equipment placement.
We must always consider the machine and the environment in which it will operate at the same time.
Installing a heat pump on a balcony is not the same as installing it in a yard
A heat pump on a balcony in Montreal presents different constraints from a ground-level installation beside a detached house.
The space is generally more restricted. Neighbors may be much closer. Walls can sometimes create areas of acoustic reverberation. Airflow may be limited by façades, railings, and other obstacles. The unit must also remain accessible without compromising the balcony’s daily use.
In this project, we had to work around several existing elements:
- the brick column on the side;
- the large window immediately behind and above it;
- the building façade;
- an existing wall grille;
- the balcony’s limited depth;
- the need to maintain reasonable access in front of the unit;
- the route of the lines to the indoor unit.
Each installation of this type must be assessed based on the exact model and the manufacturer’s requirements. It is not enough to find an open space with dimensions similar to those of the unit.
Airflow around the outdoor unit remains a priority
The large fan grille visible in the photograph occupies almost the entire front of the unit.
This is where the unit moves a significant amount of outdoor air.
A balcony may seem large enough to accommodate a heat pump, but if the fan’s airflow is directed immediately toward an obstacle, the system’s performance may be affected. The same principle applies to the air drawn in by the heat exchanger.
We therefore need to analyze:
- the front of the fan;
- the sides of the unit;
- the back of the unit;
- permanent obstacles;
- doors and windows;
- the ventilation components already present in the façade;
- access to the service panels.
The presence of the existing wall grille behind this installation is precisely a detail we must consider when positioning the unit. Depending on the grille’s function and the applicable clearances, we must ensure that the two systems do not interfere with each other.

Orion XLTH performance, R-32 refrigerant, and technical points to check before installation
R-32 is clearly identifiable on the installed unit
In the photograph, the logo R32 appears directly on the cabinet of the Fujitsu heat pump.
This Orion XLTH generation does indeed use R-32 refrigerant.
In its documentation, Fujitsu indicates a global warming potential of 675 for R-32 compared with 2,088 for R-410A, corresponding to a stated 68% reduction in GWP.
For the homeowner, this mainly means that it is a different generation of equipment from many older systems operating with R-410A.
For us, this means installation and, if necessary, service must be performed based on the exact refrigerant used by the unit, without automatically applying practices associated with an older generation.
Seasonal efficiency ratings vary by capacity
The Orion XLTH lineup offers particularly impressive efficiency ratings.
According to the Fujitsu specifications:
- the 09K shows a TRÈS2 of 33.1;
- the 12K reaches 30,5;
- the 15K shows 27,5;
- the 18K reaches 25,5;
- the 24K shows 24,0.
The units listed in this documentation are also identified with ENERGY STAR ratings, including ratings associated with cold climates.
These data are useful for comparing different heat pumps, but they must be interpreted correctly.
The unit with the highest TRÈS2 is not automatically the best choice for every home. It must first have a capacity suited to the building’s load.
What properly sizing a heat pump in Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve really means
In condos, apartments, and plexes in Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, layouts vary widely.
A single unit can serve a very open space with a connected living room, kitchen, and dining room. Elsewhere, the same number of square feet may be divided into several enclosed bedrooms and corridors.
So we look at much more than square footage.
Factors that influence our recommendation include:
The home’s exposure
A very sunny apartment with large windows may accumulate more heat in summer.
Floor level
A home located on an upper level may perform differently from a ground-floor or partially below-grade apartment.
Room layout
A single wall-mounted unit does not distribute air through closed-off rooms the way a central ducted system does.
Insulation and windows
Heat loss directly affects the heating load.
The homeowner’s objective
Some customers primarily want air conditioning. Others want to use the heat pump as their main source of heating.
Proper sizing results from considering all these factors.
Low-temperature performance worth examining
Fujitsu’s documentation provides data that consumers rarely look at but that is particularly relevant to our climate.
At -26 °C, the indicated maximum heating percentage relative to the nominal capacity is:
- 127% for the 09K;
- 102% for the 12K;
- 109% for the 15K;
- 106% for the 18K;
- 80% for the 24K.
Performance is therefore not identical from one model to another, even when they belong to the same family.
That is precisely why we prefer to discuss the specific combination installed rather than make generalizations based on the heat pump’s commercial name.
Inverter technology: useful modulation in a condo
The Orion XLTH uses an Inverter compressor.
This principle is particularly useful in a dwelling where needs vary constantly. The load can increase quickly in the afternoon with the sun, decrease when the blinds are closed, or change when a door to another room remains open.
The system can adjust its capacity instead of operating solely through a succession of starts and stops at full demand.
This modulation promotes more consistent operation and contributes to maintaining stable indoor comfort.
Sound level is an essential criterion on a balcony
In a densely built neighborhood such as Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, the outdoor unit’s noise deserves particular attention.
Fujitsu’s technical specifications indicate outdoor sound levels of approximately 46 to 50 dB(A), depending on capacity, under the reference conditions presented by the manufacturer.
The indoor unit can, for its part, reach as low as 23 dB(A) in quiet mode on certain models.
This data is particularly relevant for:
- bedrooms;
- small condos;
- home offices;
- dwellings where the unit is close to a resting area;
- balconies located near other dwellings.
A quiet appliance nevertheless remains dependent on the quality of its installation.
An inadequate support or poor vibration management can transmit noise to the structure even if the compressor itself is relatively quiet.
The anti-vibration components visible beneath the unit
In the photo, we can distinguish support points beneath the unit’s feet, installed between the heat pump and the metal bracket.
In a balcony installation, mechanical management deserves particular attention since the slab and structure can transmit vibrations.
Our goal is for the heat pump to be securely supported while avoiding, as much as possible, creating a source of vibration perceptible inside the home.
The support’s rigidity, leveling, anchor points, and the contact between the unit and the support must therefore be considered part of the HVAC installation, rather than mere accessories.
Piping dimensions vary according to the Orion XLTH version
A particularly important technical detail when replacing an older unit concerns the refrigerant piping.
The Orion XLTH series does not use the same dimensions for all capacities.
The Fujitsu specifications state:
- 09K and 12K: 1/4 in. liquid and 3/8 in. gas;
- 15K: 1/4 in. liquid and 1/2 in. gas;
- 18K and 24K: 3/8 in. liquid and 5/8 in. gas.
The maximum permitted length also varies, reaching up to 25 m for some smaller capacities, 30 m for the 15K version, and up to 50 m for the larger models.
This information is essential when replacing a unit.
We regularly encounter installations where the homeowner wants to keep the old piping to reduce the amount of work. This option can only be considered after verifying the exact compatibility of the pipe diameters and the existing installation.
15 A or 20 A: even the electrical requirements vary across the range
Systems in this family use a 208 to 230 V, 60 Hz, single-phase power supply.
However, the protection specified by Fujitsu varies according to capacity:
- 15 A for the 09K and 12K;
- 20 A for the 15K, 18K, and 24K.
The fact that an older heat pump is already present does not guarantee that its electrical supply is automatically suitable for a new unit.
We check the installed equipment, the available circuit, and the applicable requirements before finalizing the connection.
Built-in Wi-Fi and remote control
The Orion XLTH range also includes Wi-Fi connectivity, with the option of remote monitoring through the AIRSTAGE app.
In a condo, this feature can be particularly practical.
The homeowner can adjust the temperature before returning home, check the settings while away, or quickly change the operation without being directly in front of the unit.
Fujitsu also offers various control and interface options for applications requiring more advanced integration.
Mistakes to avoid when installing a heat pump on a balcony in Montreal
This Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve project illustrates several mistakes that we want to systematically avoid.
Choosing the location based solely on the available space
A heat pump needs to breathe. An empty corner is not automatically a good location.
Installing the unit directly on the ground without considering winter conditions
Defrosting and the potential accumulation of ice must be considered from the planning stage.
Blocking access to the balcony
The installation must remain functional for the occupants.
Neglecting vibrations
On a slab or structure attached to the home, they may be more noticeable than they would be on the ground in a yard.
Ignoring existing elements on the façade
Windows, grilles, vents, and other equipment can affect the space available.
Automatically reusing the existing piping
The dimensions vary according to the capacity of the Orion XLTH.
Choosing BTUs based solely on floor area
The home’s layout and heat loss matter just as much.
A compact installation that respects the reality of Montréal buildings
This project is a good example of the type of wall-mounted heat pump installation in Montréal that we regularly carry out at AirGreen.
In a detached home, we can sometimes choose among several locations around the building. On a condo or multiplex balcony, the options are often much more limited.
The goal is to make the most of the available space without treating clearances, accessibility, and winter performance as secondary details.
Here, the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH R-32 was installed on an elevated stand in a compact area of the balcony, while maintaining a clean and orderly appearance.
The series offers several features that are particularly well suited to Quebec: heating down to -26 °C, Inverter technology, R-32, a base pan heater, quiet operation, built-in Wi-Fi, and ENERGY STAR ratings depending on the models presented in Fujitsu’s documentation.
For homeowners in Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, as well as in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore, we apply the same principle: a high-performance heat pump must be supported by an installation truly suited to the building.
