In Saint-Césaire, a compact indoor installation where every inch counts

This installation carried out by AirGreen in Saint-Césaire clearly illustrates an aspect that is often underestimated when choosing a wall-mounted heat pump: it is not enough to select equipment that performs well on paper. It must also be integrated neatly into the room, the building’s constraints must be respected, and the indoor unit must be positioned to promote good air distribution without compromising the access required for maintenance.

In the photo of this installation, the FUJITSU AIRSTAGE ORION XLTH+ indoor unit is installed very high on the wall, close to a textured ceiling. The FUJITSU ORION XLTH+ is a single-zone wall-mounted heat pump designed to provide heating and cooling, with an official heating operating range down to -30°C. The lineup also uses R32 refrigerant and includes three different capacities: nominal cooling capacities of 9,000, 12,000, and 14,500 BTU/h.

A particularly interesting indoor unit when wall space is limited

The configuration visible in Saint-Césaire draws our attention to the dimensions of the wall-mounted evaporator.

For the three units in this series, Fujitsu lists an indoor unit measuring approximately:

  • 35 3/16 in. wide;
  • 11 5/8 in. high;
  • 11 in. deep;
  • 31 lb, or approximately 14 kg.

This dimensional consistency is noteworthy: moving from one capacity to another within this range does not necessarily mean installing a much larger indoor unit.

In a home where windows, doors, trim, or ceilings impose restrictions, a few inches can make all the difference.

On this installation, we have a unit positioned in the upper part of the wall. This placement makes sense for a wall-mounted heat pump, since the unit must project air into the room rather than directly against a piece of furniture or an obstacle immediately in front of it.

Placement should never be decided solely on the basis of aesthetics

We naturally aim for a clean installation. But we do not choose a location solely because “the heat pump looks better there.”

Several factors must be considered at the same time:

  • air circulation in the room;
  • the structure behind the wall;
  • the available route for the refrigerant lines;
  • condensate drainage;
  • the location of the outdoor unit;
  • the clearances specified by the manufacturer;
  • access to the filters and components for future HVAC maintenance;
  • how the occupants actually use the room.

In some projects in Montréal, for example, we work with masonry walls and relatively narrow rooms. In Laval or on the North Shore, we often encounter homes with large windows that limit the number of suitable walls. On the South Shore, in Longueuil and municipalities such as Saint-Césaire, the layout may be different again.

The best location is therefore the one that meets all these constraints, not simply the one that offers the shortest piping route.

ORION XLTH+: three capacities in the same heat pump family

Fujitsu’s documentation covers three combinations in the ORION XLTH+ series:

9,000 BTU

  • indoor unit: ASUH09KTAS;
  • outdoor unit: AOUH09KTAP1.

12,000 BTU

  • indoor unit: ASUH12KTAS;
  • outdoor unit: AOUH12KTAP1.

14,500 nominal BTU

  • indoor unit: ASUH15KTAS;
  • outdoor unit: AOUH15KTAP1.

The indoor photo taken at the Saint-Césaire site clearly shows the AIRSTAGE head, but the markings needed to identify the exact capacity with certainty are not legible enough. We therefore prefer not to arbitrarily assign a BTU rating to this installation.

This distinction is important. When a homeowner sees a photo of a heat pump, it is easy to assume that two similar-looking units are technically identical. That is not necessarily the case.

Heating capacities significantly higher than the air-conditioning figures

For a heat pump intended for Quebec, we pay particular attention to the “heating” column in the technical specifications.

The ORION XLTH+ series has nominal heating capacities of:

  • 12,000 BTU/h for model 09;
  • 15,300 BTU/h for model 12;
  • 17,400 BTU/h for model 15.

The manufacturer also indicates maximum ranges of up to 24,000 BTU/h, 27,300 BTU/h, and 28,000 BTU/h, depending on the selected capacity and operating conditions.

This information shows why we avoid judging a heat pump solely by the advertised figure of 9,000, 12,000, or 15,000 BTU.

A cold-climate heat pump is a modulating system. Its performance varies with the heating load, outdoor temperature, and indoor conditions.

Heating down to -30 °C: a particularly relevant feature in Saint-Césaire

Fujitsu specifies a heating operating range from -30 °C to 24 °C for all three models in the series.

The technical specifications go further by indicating the maximum percentage of available heating compared with the nominal capacity as the outdoor temperature drops.

At -30 °C, it indicates:

  • 113% for model 09;
  • 103% for model 12;
  • 101% for model 15.

At -26 °C, these values are 147%, 128%, and 116%, respectively.

These figures are particularly interesting in a municipality such as Saint-Césaire, where a homeowner investing in a heat pump generally wants to use it for much more than air conditioning for a few weeks in summer.

However, we emphasize that an operating capacity down to -30 °C does not automatically mean that a single wall-mounted unit can heat an entire home to that temperature.

The building’s heating load remains decisive.

An older home with significant air infiltration can require far more heat than a newer building of comparable size. That is why we assess the project before recommending a capacity.

A high-performance heat pump only becomes a good system when it is properly adapted to the building.

Energy efficiency that deserves attention

The efficiency ratings advertised for this range are particularly high.

Fujitsu indicates a TRÈS2 of:

  • 33,5 for the 09KTAP1;
  • 31,5 for the 12KTAP1;
  • 28,7 for the 15KTAP1.

The three configurations are also designated in the documentation provided as ENERGY STAR, ENERGY STAR Cold Climate, and ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2025.

For a homeowner comparing several models of wall-mounted heat pumps in Saint-Césaire, this type of information is much more useful than a comparison based solely on price.

You need to compare:

  • cold-weather heating capacity;
  • energy efficiency;
  • sound level;
  • compressor modulation;
  • refrigerant type;
  • build quality;
  • control options;
  • installation configuration;
  • electrical requirements;
  • potential eligibility for subsidy programs applicable at the time of the project.

Inverter technology to avoid on-off operation

The FUJITSU AIRSTAGE ORION XLTH+ uses an inverter compressor.

Only 23 dB in the quietest indoor mode

Acoustic comfort becomes important when the indoor unit is located in a living room, bedroom, or open living area.

Fujitsu indicates an indoor sound level as low as 23 dB(A) in quiet mode for the 09 and 12 units. The 15 model reaches 26 dB(A). The series offers six fan speeds in addition to automatic mode.

In the Saint-Césaire photo, we can also see the lower louver open in the operating position. The air outlet occupies practically the entire width of the unit, allowing the wall-mounted head to distribute its airflow throughout the served space.

The vertical direction is automated, while the horizontal orientation is indicated as manual in the technical specifications.

High-corrosion-resistance copper ProCore coils

The interior construction also deserves mention.

FUJITSU indicates that ORION XLTH+ units use ProCore copper coils with high corrosion resistance. The manufacturer associates this technology with improved indoor heat exchanger durability.

This is the kind of detail that is not visible once the installation is complete, but that deserves consideration when comparing several systems.

R32: the refrigerant used in this new generation of Fujitsu equipment

The ORION XLTH+ operates on R32.

In its documentation, Fujitsu indicates a global warming potential of 675 for R32, compared with 2 088 for R410A, representing an announced reduction of 68%.

The transition to new refrigerants also changes certain installation and service practices. This reinforces the importance of entrusting the work to an HVAC company that works with current generations of equipment and understands the manufacturer's requirements.

1/4 in. and 3/8 in. piping throughout the range

Another very useful technical detail concerns the refrigerant lines.

Fujitsu specifies the following for the 09KTAP1, 12KTAP1, and 15KTAP1 models:

  • 1/4 in. for the liquid line;
  • 3/8 in. for the gas line.

The specified minimum length is 10 feet, while the maximum length can reach 66 feet, with a maximum vertical difference of 49 feet. The documentation also specifies a precharge corresponding to 49 feet of piping.

These figures are particularly relevant when a customer calls us to replace an old heat pump and asks whether the existing lines can be kept.

We do not answer this question solely based on their appearance.

We must check their dimensions, condition, compatibility with the new system, and all installation-related requirements.

The electrical power supply also requires attention

Electrical requirements vary according to capacity.

The Fujitsu specifications indicate:

  • a 15 A circuit breaker for the 09KTAP1;
  • a 20 A circuit breaker for the 12KTAP1;
  • a 20 A circuit breaker for the 15KTAP1;

with a 208 to 230 V, 60 Hz, single-phase power supply.

We therefore check the available power supply before installation. A heat pump should not be selected independently of the panel capacity and the circuit that can be dedicated to it.

Built-in Wi-Fi and several control options

The ORION XLTH+ documentation also mentions built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, with remote monitoring through the AIRSTAGE mobile app.

For more advanced projects, the platform can also support various accessories, wired controllers, and interfaces, including those enabling BACnet or Modbus integration.

In a single-family home, all these accessories are obviously not necessary. Wi-Fi nevertheless remains a useful feature for changing a setting remotely or managing the system's operation more easily.

What the Saint-Césaire installation photo teaches us about a proper wall-mounted installation

An installation image can sometimes be more instructive than a long list of features.

Here, several elements stand out.

Discreet visual integration

The white unit blends naturally with the wall and light-colored ceiling. No bulky installation is visible around the head.

A high position to promote distribution

The heat pump is installed in the upper part of the wall, which follows the principle of a unit designed to distribute air throughout the room.

An airflow louver free to move

In the photo, the louver is open and encounters no immediate obstacles. This mechanical freedom is important to allow the system to direct its airflow.

An installation that must remain accessible

Even when a unit is installed high up, future servicing must be considered. The ORION XLTH+ filter is washable, and regular maintenance remains necessary to maintain adequate airflow.

Choosing the wall before planning the lines

The indoor unit and outdoor unit are part of the same system. The routing of the copper lines, wiring, and drain must be planned before permanently securing the head.

Installing a unit without considering its airflow

A head directed toward a nearby obstruction can compromise comfort distribution. We therefore consider the entire geometry of the room.

Choosing BTUs based on an approximate rule

The famous calculation based exclusively on square footage can provide an initial estimate, but it does not replace a building analysis.

Windows, insulation, ceilings, exposure, and room layout strongly influence the actual load.

Why the ORION XLTH+ is particularly well suited to Quebec conditions

These are useful features, but their effectiveness always depends on the installation context.

For example, an outdoor heat pump installed too low in an area where snow accumulates may encounter difficulties despite having excellent technical specifications. An indoor head that is poorly positioned may also distribute air less effectively despite remarkable energy efficiency.
