In Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu, a compact installation where the positioning of the indoor unit made all the difference
In this installation completed by AirGreen in Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu, the most interesting challenge was not a long exterior piping run or a large mechanical unit. It is visible directly in the photo: the space available for installing the FUJITSU AIRSTAGE ORION XLTH+ wall-mounted heat pump was particularly tight.
The indoor unit is located very close to the ceiling, immediately beside a wall corner, in an area where the architecture leaves relatively little room for maneuver. A door opening is also visible lower down in the room. In this context, shifting the unit by a few inches could have changed the airflow path, the final appearance of the installation, or the required routing of the lines.
We therefore integrated the wall-mounted head into the upper section of the wall while keeping its air-discharge louver fully functional. In the photograph, the heat pump is running: the lower louver is open and the air outlet remains unobstructed. A white finishing section beneath the unit also helps organize the routing of the lines without leaving a series of pipes and wires exposed in the room.
This installation illustrates a principle we apply every day in our HVAC projects in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore, South Shore, and in Montérégie: a heat pump’s location should never be decided solely based on where it is easiest to mount.
A very high placement that had to remain compatible with airflow
A wall-mounted heat pump works by drawing in room air and then redistributing it after heating or cooling it. To achieve good results, it must therefore have adequate clearances and, above all, be oriented toward an area where its airflow can circulate.
In the Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu project, the unit was placed in a narrow area near the ceiling. Nevertheless, the photograph shows that the front panel and lower louver remain unobstructed.
This is an essential point.
Installing a wall-mounted unit too close to an obstruction can create several problems:
- poor heat or cooling distribution;
- premature air recirculation around the unit;
- difficulty reaching certain parts of the room;
- less convenient access when cleaning the filters;
- a visual finish that looks forced rather than integrated into the building.
We therefore always seek a balance between performance, accessibility and aesthetics.
Proximity to the ceiling should never be improvised
In a photo like this, a unit installed very high may seem like a purely aesthetic decision. In practice, it requires much more thought.
Before securing the mounting plate, we must check the wall structure, the required clearance, the planned route for the refrigerant lines, and the condensate drain. We must also anticipate how the homeowner will access the unit’s washable filter.
In a compact room or one with limited available wall space, the best location is not necessarily the center of the wall. Instead, it is the point that allows the wall-mounted heat pump to distribute air effectively while respecting the building’s constraints.
Why the FUJITSU ORION XLTH+ works well in tight spaces
The FUJITSU AIRSTAGE ORION XLTH+ series includes three capacities, but all the indoor units retain a relatively compact format.
According to the Fujitsu specifications, the ASUH09KTAS, ASUH12KTAS and ASUH15KTAS indoor models measure approximately 35 3/16 in. wide, 11 5/8 in. high and 11 in. deep, with a weight of approximately 31 lb.
This consistency becomes particularly useful in an installation like the one in Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu.
A homeowner may need a different capacity depending on their building’s heat losses, without necessarily having to accept a much larger indoor unit.
The lineup includes:
- 09KTAP1 : 9,000 nominal BTU/h in cooling mode;
- 12KTAP1 : 12,000 nominal BTU/h;
- 15KTAP1 : 14,500 nominal BTU/h.
The complete combinations are ASUH09KTAS + AOUH09KTAP1, ASUH12KTAS + AOUH12KTAP1 and ASUH15KTAS + AOUH15KTAP1.
The label visible in the photograph is not clear enough to identify with certainty which of these capacities was installed on this specific project. We therefore avoid arbitrarily assigning a BTU rating to this installation.
The BTU rating for cooling tells only part of the story
When a homeowner compares several systems, it is easy to think that a 12,000 BTU heat pump always produces exactly 12,000 BTUs in heating mode.
The reality is more interesting.
For the ORION XLTH+ product line, Fujitsu indicates rated heating capacities of:
- 12,000 BTU/h for model 09;
- 15,300 BTU/h for model 12;
- 17,400 BTU/h for model 15.
The maximum advertised ranges reach 24,000, 27,300, and 28,000 BTU/h, respectively, depending on the operating conditions.
This shows why, at AirGreen, we do not size a heat pump installation based solely on the number displayed in the model name.
The choice must take the building's actual needs into account.
A wall-mounted heat pump designed for heating down to -30 °C
In Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu, winter heating is obviously a major consideration.
Fujitsu's documentation presents the ORION XLTH+ as a product line intended for heating in cold climates down to -30 °C (-22 °F). All three capacities have a heating operating range from -30 °C to 24 °C.
The specifications also provide data on the maximum available capacity as the outdoor temperature decreases.
At -26 °C, the published values are:
- 147% of the rated capacity for model 09;
- 128% for model 12;
- 116% for model 15.
At -30 °C, Fujitsu still indicates 113%, 103%, and 101%, respectively.
These figures must nevertheless be interpreted in the context of the manufacturer's test conditions. They do not mean that a small heat pump installed in a single room will automatically be able to heat an entire home when the temperature reaches -30 °C.
Proper sizing remains essential
A well-insulated 1,200-square-foot home and another home of the same size built several decades ago may have radically different heating requirements.
When choosing a heat pump, we consider, among other things:
- the area actually being served;
- the level of insulation;
- air infiltration;
- the number of windows;
- walls exposed to the outdoors;
- the layout of the floors;
- ceiling height;
- the opening between the different rooms;
- the existing heating system;
- sun exposure.
In the case of this Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu installation, the photo notably shows possible airflow toward an adjacent room through the opening located below and in front of the unit. This type of layout must be taken into account: actual air movement is far more significant than a simple “BTU per square foot” calculation.
Efficiency, quiet operation, R32, and technical details: why this ORION XLTH+ is an appealing option in Quebec
High seasonal efficiency ratings
For the range, Fujitsu announces TRÈS2 values of:
- 33,5 for the 09KTAP1;
- 31,5 for the 12KTAP1;
- 28,7 for the 15KTAP1.
The technical specifications also identify the three configurations with the designations ENERGY STAR, ENERGY STAR Cold Climate and ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2025.
For a homeowner comparing a wall-mounted heat pump in Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu, these indicators provide much more useful information than nominal capacity alone.
An efficient system must be able to provide the desired comfort while consuming a reasonable amount of energy, but its actual performance in a home will always depend on the conditions of use and the characteristics of the building.
Inverter technology: avoiding unnecessary temperature fluctuations
The ORION XLTH+ uses an Inverter compressor, capable of modulating its operation according to demand.
In a small room or an area where the load varies quickly, this modulation is particularly valuable.
When only a small amount of heat is needed, the unit can reduce its output rather than treating every demand as a full-power situation.
In summer, the principle is similar for air conditioning.
This ability to adapt helps maintain a more consistent environment and also explains why choosing a properly sized capacity is preferable to systematically installing the largest unit available.
Up to 23 dB(A) in the quietest indoor mode
The photograph shows a wall-mounted unit installed in an indoor space where noise could easily become noticeable.
FUJITSU states that the noise level can drop to 23 dB(A) in quiet mode for the 09 and 12 versions, and to 26 dB(A) for version 15.
All three models feature six fan speeds plus automatic mode.
This flexibility is useful because an indoor unit does not need to operate continuously at the same airflow rate.
At high speed, the published maximum airflow reaches:
- 820 m³/h for model 09;
- 870 m³/h for model 12;
- 930 m³/h for model 15.
The louver visible in the photo is part of the comfort
In the image of our construction site, the lower louver is widely open.
This is not simply an aesthetic consideration. The Fujitsu specifications indicate automatic vertical airflow direction, while horizontal adjustment is manual.
The chosen location must therefore allow this part of the unit to operate freely.
One error we sometimes see in poorly planned installations is positioning the heat pump so close to an obstacle that part of the airflow is immediately redirected toward the unit.
We avoid this type of compromise whenever possible.
R32: a refrigerant with lower global warming potential
The ORION XLTH+ uses R32 refrigerant.
In its documentation, Fujitsu compares a global warming potential of 675 for R32 with 2,088 for R410A, representing an announced reduction of 68%.
This new generation of refrigerant also requires working with the appropriate procedures and equipment during installation and service.
For the homeowner, choosing an HVAC contractor experienced with today’s systems therefore becomes even more important.
Copper ProCore coils inside
Behind the photographed white front panel lies another interesting technical detail: according to Fujitsu, the indoor units in this series are equipped with highly corrosion-resistant copper ProCore coils.
This kind of detail is obviously not noticeable when comparing two heat pumps in a showroom.
Nevertheless, the heat exchanger construction, compressor type, defrost management, and low-temperature operating characteristics are among the factors we examine when comparing different systems for a customer.
The piping dimensions are identical across all three capacities
For this series, Fujitsu specifies:
- 1/4 in. for the liquid line;
- 3/8 in. for the gas line.
The minimum length is 10 ft, while the maximum length can reach 66 ft. The maximum vertical difference is listed as 49 ft.
These values are particularly important when replacing an older heat pump.
Piping already present in a wall may seem reusable, but we must check its dimensions and condition before making that decision.
In the Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu project, the small finishing line cover visible beneath the head unit clearly demonstrates the importance of planning the route of the connections rather than letting the piping alone determine the unit’s location.
A power supply that depends on capacity
The range operates at 208-230 V, 60 Hz, single-phase.
The specifications indicate:
- 15 A for the 09KTAP1;
- 20 A for the 12KTAP1;
- 20 A for the 15KTAP1.
We therefore check the available electrical capacity before finalizing the selection.
Choosing a model that is perfectly suited to the room but does not match the building’s electrical capabilities can lead to unexpected modifications. Good preparation avoids this problem.
Built-in Wi-Fi and advanced controls
FUJITSU documentation mentions built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling remote monitoring through the AIRSTAGE app.
The system is also compatible with various optional controllers and interfaces.
For a standard residential installation, the owner does not necessarily need all this control architecture. The built-in Wi-Fi is nevertheless convenient for changing a setpoint remotely or checking the system’s operation without having to be physically in front of the remote control.
A base pan heater designed for extreme cold conditions
Even though the photo of this project shows only the indoor unit, the heat pump’s performance obviously also depends on its outdoor unit.
FUJITSU indicates that the ORION XLTH+ includes, among other features:
- a base pan heater for extremely cold climates;
- automatic defrosting;
- a low-noise outdoor mode;
- an Inverter technology;
- heating operation down to -30 °C.
In our installations in Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu and on the South Shore, we must also position this outdoor unit while taking snow, defrost drainage, wind, and the necessary clearances into account.
Choosing the indoor head is therefore only half of the project.
Mistakes to avoid in a tight indoor space like this
Mounting the heat pump before checking future access
The ORION XLTH+ filters are washable. It must therefore be accessible periodically.
A head installed in a place that is impossible to service may seem acceptable on the first day and become very frustrating after a few months.
Neglecting the louver’s full opening
The unit must be able to direct air without its louver hitting the ceiling, trim, or another obstruction.
Choosing the location solely to shorten the copper line
A simple refrigerant line run is desirable, but it should not come at the expense of air circulation in the room.
Oversizing to “be certain”
An oversized heat pump is not automatically more comfortable. The right unit is the one whose capacity matches the building’s needs.
Overlooking the visible finish
Even a technically correct installation can be disappointing if the piping and wiring cross the room without proper organization.
The visible finishing section beneath the Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu unit is an integral part of the project’s overall quality.
An installation designed to remain practical during maintenance
At AirGreen, we think about HVAC maintenance from the moment we choose the location.
The filters must be cleaned regularly to preserve airflow. Over time, the indoor unit may also require more thorough cleaning of the heat exchanger, blower wheel, or condensate drain.
A very high installation therefore requires particular attention to accessibility.
The goal is never to create an installation that looks spectacular in a photo but is difficult to maintain a few years later. Instead, we seek a durable solution that remains practical throughout the system’s entire service life.
An installation that sums up our approach at AirGreen
This FUJITSU ORION XLTH+ heat pump installation in Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu is interesting precisely because it does not rely on an ideal situation.
The ceiling is close. The available wall is relatively narrow. An angle is immediately next to the unit. The passage to another section of the home must be taken into account. The connections must be organized neatly.
This type of configuration is where installation experience becomes particularly important.
We integrated the heat pump into the available space while preserving the shutter’s opening, air distribution, and a consistent finish.
