In this duplex in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension , the owners wanted to modernize their comfort while reducing their heating and cooling costs. They chose a Gree wall-mounted heat pump , installed by our AirGreen team, with particular attention paid to performance, durability, and the aesthetics of the facade.
In the photo, you can see the Gree outdoor unit freshly installed against the foundation of the house, accompanied by the electrical box and our AirGreen plate: a concentration of technology at the service of four-season comfort.
A typical Villeray context: little space, many constraints
In this area of Montreal, buildings are close together, side passages are narrow, and every centimeter counts. Therefore, installing a heat pump requires:
-
Respect the necessary clearances to ensure good air circulation;
-
Limit noise for the immediate neighborhood;
-
Protect equipment from damage caused by snow, ice, and debris;
-
Remain accessible for maintenance without obstructing windows or traffic lanes.
Here, the Gree heat pump serves one or more indoor wall heads located on the floors, responsible for air conditioning and heating the main living areas.
A Gree high-efficiency wall-mounted heat pump
We recommended a new generation Gree wall-mounted heat pump , sized around 12,000 to 18,000 BTU depending on the home's needs. This Gree line of units offers:
-
A variable speed (inverter) compressor that continuously adjusts the power supplied;
-
Very good energy efficiency, particularly interesting in the face of rising electricity costs;
-
Reliable heating capacity even in cold weather, significantly reducing the load on electric baseboard heaters;
-
Quiet operation, both inside and outside, to preserve the peace and quiet of the occupants and neighbors.
The objective was clear: to offer stable comfort all year round without transforming the side courtyard into a cluttered technical room.
Positioning of the outdoor unit: clearance, protection and aesthetics
The Gree outdoor unit was installed along the foundation, in front of a basement window , above a bed of decorative stone. This choice offers several advantages:
-
The crushed stone bed improves the drainage of defrost and rainwater , preventing mud and splashes on the facade.
-
The machine is raised above the ground , which protects it from snow accumulation in winter and prolongs its lifespan.
-
Positioning it against the wall minimizes obstruction of the side passage while respecting the required clearances at the rear and sides for airflow.
-
The basement window retains its function: the heat pump does not block it completely and still lets in natural light.
The result is a compact, clean installation that is perfectly consistent with the existing layout.
Technical details: connections, sealing and power supply
Several details visible in the photo attest to the care taken by our team:
-
The refrigeration lines and communication cable pass through a sealed opening in the foundation. The area around it is carefully caulked to prevent air and water infiltration, while also protecting the refrigeration insulation.
-
The bundle is grouped and protected by tape and sheathing suitable for outdoor conditions, which limits mechanical wear and UV damage.
-
The heat pump's power supply is connected to a DiversiTech disconnect box installed in the immediate vicinity of the unit. This box allows:
-
to quickly cut off the power supply for service interventions;
-
to comply with the requirements of the Electrical Code;
-
to secure the installation for occupants and technicians.
-
Inside, the unit is powered by a dedicated circuit , sized according to the power of the Gree and protected by the appropriate circuit breaker in the main panel.
Preparing for the Montreal winter
Montreal's climate imposes particular constraints on heat pumps: heavy snow, freeze/thaw cycles, ice, and cold winds. To address these challenges, we have:
-
Position the device at a sufficient height to prevent the bottom of the casing from being buried in the snow;
-
Ensure that no obstacle (low wall, solid fence, dense vegetation) obstructs the intake of air and the exhaust of hot air , which is essential for defrosting cycles;
-
Sufficient clearance is provided in front of the upper fan to allow for easy periodic maintenance (cleaning of the fins, inspection of the fittings, etc.).
Thanks to this preparation, the Gree heat pump will be able to operate reliably for many years, even during the harshest winters.
Comfort and savings for homeowners
Since this facility was put into operation in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension, homeowners have benefited from:
-
Effective air conditioning in their living spaces during summer heat waves;
-
With economical heating for most of the cold season, the Gree takes over from the baseboards to maintain a stable temperature;
-
A relatively quiet system, whose external noise blends easily into the ambient noise of the neighborhood;
-
Greater comfort flexibility: precise temperature control, night mode, dehumidification, etc.
Electricity bills are reduced and the overall comfort of the house is significantly improved, both in summer and winter.
