A discreet indoor installation designed to optimize air distribution without cluttering the room

In this Kirkland residence, our assignment was to integrate a Hitachi airHome 400 wall-mounted heat pump into a room where the available wall space had to be used precisely. The indoor unit needed to ensure good air distribution, remain accessible for maintenance, and blend cleanly into the existing décor without adding visible lines or encroaching on circulation areas.

The result is a compact installation positioned high, near the ceiling and close to a side wall. This position completely frees up the living space beneath the unit and allows the motorized louver to project treated air into the room rather than directly against a piece of furniture or an obstacle.

The photograph also shows a detector installed on the adjacent wall. This type of detail is part of our analysis before drilling: we must account for existing equipment, studs, wiring, safety features, drain slope, and the space required to open the unit's panel during future HVAC maintenance.

Why the indoor unit's positioning was crucial

A wall-mounted heat pump should not be positioned based on aesthetics alone. Its location directly affects:

  • airflow range;
  • temperature uniformity;
  • the perceived noise level;
  • condensate drainage;
  • ease of cleaning;
  • the visibility of the lines;
  • access to the filters;
  • the system's overall performance.

In this Kirkland installation, we chose an elevated position to promote effective horizontal air distribution. In cooling mode, cool air naturally tends to descend. An indoor unit installed near the ceiling can therefore distribute air over a greater distance before it mixes with the ambient air.

In heating mode, the direction of the louvers should be adjusted to direct more warm air downward. The Hitachi airHome 400 remote control allows you to adjust the airflow direction, fan speed, operating mode, and desired temperature.

An interior finish with no exposed piping around the unit

One of the most interesting aspects of this installation is the understated final result. Around the indoor unit, no long line-hide cover crosses the wall or descends into the room.

The visible configuration indicates that the lines may have been routed directly behind the unit or immediately through the wall. When the building structure allows it, this method provides an especially clean finish.

The technical bundle connecting the indoor and outdoor units generally includes:

  • the liquid refrigerant line;
  • the insulated gas refrigerant line;
  • the communication cable;
  • the conductors required by the system;
  • the condensate drain pipe.

Each component must be positioned without crushing or excessive bending. The drain must maintain a sufficient slope so that the water produced during cooling drains naturally, without backing up into the indoor unit.

Why drainage is just as important as refrigeration

A wall-mounted heat pump can remove a significant amount of moisture from the air during hot days in Montreal. This water collects in the indoor unit’s drain pan and then flows into the drain.

An inadequate slope can lead to:

  • gurgling sounds;
  • water accumulation in the pan;
  • odors;
  • overflowing;
  • marks on the wall;
  • persistent moisture inside the unit.

During commissioning, we check drainage under actual conditions rather than assuming that a properly connected pipe will necessarily function correctly. This step is especially important when the unit is installed near the ceiling, as in this Kirkland heat pump project.

An installation near the ceiling that remains accessible for maintenance

The Hitachi unit is installed high on the wall to optimize air circulation and preserve living space. However, we must maintain sufficient clearance around the casing to allow air intake and opening of the front panel.

  • removable side covers;
  • a drain connection that can be oriented to the left or right;
  • a removable drain pan;
  • a large installation plate;
  • a front cover that can be removed with just a few screws;
  • a removable fan motor bracket;
  • simplified access to the pipes and drain.

These features become particularly useful when the unit is installed in a specific space, near a corner or another wall-mounted appliance. They allow the necessary work to be carried out without unnecessarily removing the entire unit.

A Hitachi airHome 400 suited to residential comfort

The Hitachi airHome 400 lineup includes several capacities ranging from 9,000 to 36,000 BTU/h. The photograph does not allow us to read the rating plate or exact model number; therefore, we cannot assign a specific capacity to this installation based solely on its appearance.

The actual sizing must always be determined based on the characteristics of the residence:

  • area of the zone to be conditioned;
  • insulation level;
  • number and orientation of windows;
  • sun exposure;
  • ceiling height;
  • open or compartmentalized layout;
  • presence of a staircase;
  • number of occupants;
  • heating requirements;
  • existing primary heating system.

An oversized heat pump can quickly reach the requested temperature, then stop or reduce its operation before properly dehumidifying the room. An undersized unit, on the other hand, may run continuously without providing the expected comfort on the most demanding days.

Our job is therefore to recommend the appropriate capacity, not simply the largest unit that can fit on the wall.

Vector DC Inverter technology: more stable temperature

The Hitachi airHome 400 uses Vector DC Inverter technology. Unlike a conventional unit that operates mainly at full capacity before shutting off, the Inverter compressor adjusts its speed according to the actual thermal load.

When the room is very hot, the system can increase its output to quickly reach the requested temperature. As the temperature approaches the setpoint, the compressor slows down and maintains more consistent operation.

This modulation offers several benefits in a Kirkland residence:

  • fewer sudden temperature fluctuations;
  • fewer start-stop cycles;
  • generally quieter operation;
  • better humidity management;
  • consumption better matched to actual needs;
  • more consistent comfort near the unit and at the other end of the room.

Depending on the selected capacity, the series achieves a seasonal efficiency rating of up to 20.0 TRÉS2 and a region 5 CPSC2 of up to 8.0. The models operate with R32 refrigerant and are offered with an advertised heating range down to approximately -20.5 °C. The 9,000 and 12,000 BTU models can operate as quietly as 29 dB(A) in quiet indoor mode.

A sound level suited to occupied spaces

The indoor unit’s proximity to occupants makes sound level particularly important. In a bedroom, office, or family room, a fan that is too loud can become tiring even when the temperature is comfortable.

The airHome 400 series offers several fan speeds. The system can operate at high airflow when a quick adjustment is needed, then gradually reduce the speed as the temperature stabilizes.

GoodSleep mode adjusts operation overnight to reduce fan speed and gently modify the temperature according to the selected settings. This feature can be useful when the heat pump serves a bedroom or an area near sleeping spaces.

FrostWash: helping keep the indoor coil cleaner

The FrostWash feature is one of the distinctive characteristics of this Hitachi series. It uses a freezing and thawing process on the indoor coil to capture and remove some of the accumulated impurities.

Dust that passes through the filters can settle on the damp coil. Over time, this buildup restricts airflow and may contribute to certain odors.

FrostWash helps slow this buildup, but it does not replace:

  • regularly cleaning the pre-filters;
  • inspecting the condensate pan;
  • cleaning the tangential fan;
  • checking the drain;
  • professional cleaning when the unit is heavily contaminated.

At AirGreen, we explain this distinction to our customers. A self-cleaning feature is a preventive maintenance tool, but no heat pump becomes completely maintenance-free.

Mold Guard and residual moisture management

After a cooling cycle, the indoor coil may remain damp. The Mold Guard feature circulates air through the unit for a set period and heats the coil to reduce residual moisture.

This feature helps limit conditions conducive to odors and mold growth in a clean unit. However, it does not remove mold that is already established in a neglected appliance.

To achieve good long-term results, we recommend that homeowners:

  1. clean the filters according to frequency of use;
  2. do not obstruct the intake above the unit;
  3. watch for any gurgling noise coming from the drain;
  4. have the unit inspected when airflow decreases;
  5. schedule HVAC maintenance before buildup becomes significant.

PM2.5 filtration and stainless steel pre-filter

The airHome 400 features a PM2.5 activated carbon purification filter as well as a stainless-steel prefilter. This combination helps capture certain particles and reduce odors in recirculated air.

It is important to understand that a wall-mounted heat pump does not replace an air exchanger. It does not automatically bring in fresh air from outside; it primarily treats the air already present in the room.

In a Kirkland home, good indoor comfort therefore often relies on several complementary elements:

  • a properly sized heat pump;
  • adequate ventilation;
  • reasonable humidity control;
  • well-maintained filters;
  • a sufficiently airtight building envelope;

The Hitachi airHome 400 can be equipped with an optional Wi-Fi adapter for remotely managing the unit. Depending on the selected configuration, it is possible to:

  • change the temperature from a phone;
  • schedule operating periods;
  • control the heat pump before returning home;
  • use certain voice commands;
  • view an estimate of energy consumption.

A Hitachi wall-mounted thermostat may also be offered as an option for users who prefer a fixed control rather than a handheld remote.

For homes in the West Island where occupants travel frequently, remote control can be particularly convenient. It allows users to check the settings without leaving the system running unnecessarily at full capacity while they are away.

This Kirkland project shows why small details make the difference in the quality of an HVAC installation

The visible quality of an installation begins with a level, properly positioned unit that is correctly integrated into the wall. The invisible quality lies behind the unit: refrigerant connections, insulation, drain slope, evacuation, tightness, electrical supply, and commissioning settings.

Evacuation must never be neglected

Before releasing the refrigerant contained in the outdoor unit, the circuit must be evacuated to remove air and moisture from the lines.

An installation commissioned too quickly can leave moisture in the system. This contamination can impair compressor lubrication, affect performance, and reduce long-term reliability.

We also check the tightness of the connections before completing the tests.

Common mistakes to avoid

When installing a wall-mounted heat pump in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore or the South Shore, certain mistakes occur regularly:

  • install the unit facing an obstacle;
  • choose the capacity based solely on the floor area;
  • place the unit too close to the ceiling without allowing for proper air intake;

  • neglect to insulate the gas line;

Warranties available according to registration and selected options

Hitachi documentation presents several levels of coverage. The standard warranty indicated is seven years on the compressor and five years on parts. An extended warranty of ten years on the compressor and ten years on parts may be available for certain residential installations after online registration.

An upgraded option may also provide up to twelve years on the compressor, ten years on parts and ten years on labour, subject to purchasing the upgrade and the applicable conditions.

The equipment registration should therefore not be postponed. The owner must retain:

  • the installation invoice;
  • model numbers;
  • serial numbers;
  • the commissioning date;
  • warranty documents;
  • maintenance records when required.
