A balcony installation designed to preserve space, limit vibrations, and withstand Montréal winters
Installing a wall-mounted heat pump in Ahuntsic-Cartierville can sometimes require much more than simply attaching the outdoor unit to a wall. In this project completed by our AirGreen team, the unit had to be installed on a narrow balcony, immediately beside a door, a window, a railing, and a brick wall. Every detail therefore had to be planned to preserve practical movement on the balcony, ensure adequate airflow around the heat pump, and provide a clean, stable, and durable installation.
We installed a Samsung WindFree™ MaxHeat wall-mounted heat pump, a particularly attractive solution for Montréal homeowners seeking efficient heating in winter, comfortable cooling in summer, and gentler air distribution indoors.
The installation photo notably shows the outdoor unit positioned on an elevated aluminum stand. This configuration is not purely aesthetic. It addresses several important technical considerations in an urban environment such as Ahuntsic-Cartierville, where balconies may be exposed to snow, ice, water accumulation, and vibrations transmitted through the building structure.
Why the Samsung WindFree™ MaxHeat was suitable for this home
The Samsung WindFree™ MaxHeat range was developed to meet heating and cooling needs in regions where winter temperatures can be very low. Depending on the exact combination of units and the capacity selected, certain systems in this range can continue operating down to approximately -30 °C.
For a Montréal home, this feature offers a considerable advantage. A heat pump used only in mild temperatures requires more frequent reliance on the main electric heating system. A machine designed for cold climates, by contrast, can continue providing heat for a greater part of the winter.
The installed model also features WindFree™ technology, which sets this Samsung range apart from many traditional wall-mounted air conditioners. Once the room reaches the desired temperature, the indoor unit can distribute air through thousands of micro-openings instead of maintaining a powerful stream of air directed at occupants.
This airflow is particularly suitable for installations where the indoor unit is located:
- near a bed;
- above a sofa;
- in a narrow living room;
- facing a work area;
- in a home where the occupants are sensitive to cold drafts.
The system therefore continues to control the temperature while reducing the unpleasant sensation of a direct air stream.
A heat pump suited to all four seasons
A Samsung wall-mounted heat pump is not only used to cool the home for a few weeks in summer. It can perform several important functions:
- cool rooms during hot and humid periods;
- heat efficiently during the fall, winter, and spring;
- reduce indoor humidity in dehumidification mode;
- improve air circulation in the served area;
- help reduce the use of electric baseboard heaters.
Actual performance nevertheless depends on several factors: the home's area, insulation level, sun exposure, room layout, number of floors, and selected rated capacity.
At AirGreen, we avoid choosing a machine based solely on the area stated by the owner. Two homes of identical dimensions may require different capacities. An apartment on the top floor, heavily exposed to sunlight and equipped with large windows, may have significantly greater needs than a better-insulated middle-floor unit.
The main challenge: installing the outdoor unit on a compact balcony
The balcony visible in the photo offered limited installation space. The unit had to be placed close to the building without blocking the door, unnecessarily encroaching on the outdoor space, or directing the airflow straight toward an obstacle.
The Samsung outdoor unit was therefore positioned parallel to the railing, with its fan directed toward the open space. This orientation promotes air discharge and prevents the airflow from being immediately pushed back toward the heat exchanger.
Incorrect positioning can lead to several problems:
- recirculation of discharged air;
- reduced heating or cooling capacity;
- longer compressor operation;
- increased electricity consumption;
- greater ice buildup in winter;
- difficult access during maintenance or repairs.
The proximity of a railing must also be carefully considered. Even when partially open, it can affect airflow around the machine. Our technicians therefore check the actual clearances rather than considering only the floor space available.
An elevated support designed for a long-lasting installation
The outdoor unit rests on an aluminum structure equipped with four legs and ground-mounting plates. This type of support offers several advantages for a balcony heat pump installation.
First, it keeps the unit above the ground. In heating mode, a heat pump produces water during defrost cycles. When the outdoor air is cold, this water can quickly freeze around the base of the unit. A machine installed too close to the ground may then become surrounded by accumulated ice.
Second, the elevation facilitates drainage beneath the unit. It reduces the risk of the unit’s base remaining in prolonged contact with water, slush, or debris.
Third, a rigid, properly leveled support stabilizes the equipment. A heat pump must remain level to protect its compressor, fans, and refrigerant connections.
For this installation, we also placed anti-vibration blocks between the Samsung unit and the support. These components help limit the transmission of vibrations to the metal structure, balcony, and building.
This precaution is particularly important in condominiums and multi-unit buildings. A slight vibration outside can become much more noticeable indoors when it travels through a floor, wall, or metal frame.
The passage of the refrigerant lines
The lines connecting the indoor unit to the outdoor unit run down through a vertical line set cover installed near the window frame. This cover protects and conceals several essential components:
- the insulated copper pipes;
- the communication cable;
- the power supply, depending on the configuration;
- the condensate drain hose.
In a professional HVAC installation, the appearance of the line set cover represents only part of the work. Inside, the lines must be prepared and assembled precisely.
The ends of the copper pipes must be cut cleanly, properly flared, and tightened to the appropriate torque. An improperly made connection can cause a gradual refrigerant leak. This type of leak may go unnoticed for several months before causing a loss of capacity, frost on the lines, or compressor failure.
Before start-up, we carry out the necessary procedures to check the circuit’s tightness and remove moisture and air from the lines. Evacuation with a vacuum pump must never be replaced by simply purging with refrigerant. A rushed installation can shorten the machine’s lifespan, even when the equipment itself is high quality.
A clean integration near the window and brick wall
The routing of the lines was chosen to reduce their visible length and preserve access to the window. The line set cover is positioned in an inconspicuous area, against the building’s vertical section, without unnecessarily passing through the masonry in several places.
In Ahuntsic-Cartierville’s brick buildings, every opening must be made carefully. Damage to the cladding must be avoided, as must creating water infiltration or leaving an opening through which cold air, moisture, or insects could enter.
After the conduits are routed, the opening must be properly closed and sealed. The passage must also be sloped to prevent exterior water from migrating into the home.
The photograph shows a compact installation, but it is the result of a series of precise decisions: support positioning, unit alignment, front clearance, conduit routing, accessibility, and vibration reduction.
This Ahuntsic-Cartierville project illustrates the details that make the difference between a quick installation and a truly professional HVAC installation
Indoor comfort does not depend solely on the brand
The Samsung WindFree™ MaxHeat is a high-performance system, but even an excellent heat pump can deliver disappointing results when it is improperly sized or installed.
Final quality depends in particular on:
- the choice of capacity in BTUs;
- the positioning of the indoor unit;
- clearance around the outdoor unit;
- the quality of the refrigerant connections;
- condensate drainage;
- adjustment of operating modes;
- periodic maintenance.
An oversized unit may reach the desired temperature too quickly, run short cycles, and control humidity less effectively. Conversely, an undersized unit may run almost continuously on very hot or very cold days.
For this reason, we assess the home before recommending a capacity. We examine the room layout, heat loss, windows, insulation, and occupants’ habits.
What to check before installing a unit on a balcony
Condo owners and building managers should check several points before planning the installation of a wall-mounted heat pump in Montreal.
Condo regulations
Some condo associations impose restrictions regarding:
- the location of the outdoor unit;
- the colour or route of the conduits;
- openings drilled into the masonry;
- the maximum noise level;
- the visibility of the equipment from the street;
- work on common areas.
Written authorization may be required before work begins.
Municipal regulations
The rules may vary depending on the borough, the façade involved, and the type of building. An installation facing a rear courtyard will not necessarily be subject to the same requirements as a unit visible from the street.
Power supply
The electrical panel must be able to accommodate the breaker required by the selected model. The wiring gauge and electrical protection must correspond to the nameplate data and applicable requirements.
Winter drainage
Water produced during defrosting must be able to drain away without creating a dangerous ice block on the balcony, near a door, or in a passageway.
Maintenance access
A unit wedged between a wall and a railing can become difficult to clean or repair. Reasonable access to the service panels and connections must therefore be maintained.
Commonly observed balcony installation errors
During service visits in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore, we sometimes encounter installations where the available space was used without considering how the equipment actually operates.
Among the most common mistakes:
- Installing the unit directly on the ground, without accounting for snow or ice accumulation.
- Pointing the fan toward a solid wall, which encourages air recirculation.
- Securing the unit without vibration isolators, causing a noticeable humming sound inside the dwelling.
- Routing the drain without sufficient slope, resulting in water backups.
- Leaving the piping exposed, which degrades insulation and detracts from the building's appearance.
- Blocking access to a door or window, making everyday use of the balcony more difficult.
- Neglecting to seal the opening, which can cause air and water infiltration.
In the project presented, the elevated support, fan orientation, and compact piping route made it possible to avoid these problems while maintaining a visually orderly installation.
Possible eligibility for subsidies
Certain cold-climate wall-mounted heat pump combinations may qualify for financial assistance programs available in Quebec. However, eligibility does not depend solely on the product line's commercial name.
The following must be verified:
- the exact indoor and outdoor unit numbers;
- the AHRI reference number;
- the recognized heating capacity;
- the applicable certification;
- the type of building;
- the heating system being replaced or supplemented;
- the program conditions in effect on the date of the work.
For certain Samsung WindFree™ MaxHeat configurations, certified combinations for cold climates with high seasonal efficiency are available. However, the exact combination must be confirmed before presenting a subsidy estimate. At AirGreen, we list the precise models in our proposal so the client can understand what they are purchasing and verify which programs their project may qualify for.
Usage tips after installation
For good performance, we recommend letting the heat pump maintain a relatively stable temperature rather than turning it off and restarting it several times a day.
In winter, it is preferable to:
- select heating mode;
- avoid automatic mode when a secondary heating source is present;
- keep the filters clean;
- keep the outdoor unit clear;
- do not break the ice with metal tools;
- monitor ice buildup after defrost cycles.
A small amount of outdoor steam and a temporary interruption of the fan during a defrost cycle are normal. However, a thick layer of ice that completely covers the heat exchanger or prevents the fan from turning should be inspected.
Indoors, the filters can generally be removed and cleaned by the occupant. However, professional HVAC maintenance is still recommended to clean the heat exchanger, blower wheel, condensate pan, and drain more thoroughly.
The result of this AirGreen installation in Ahuntsic-Cartierville
This installation demonstrates that an outdoor heat pump can be integrated onto a balcony without sacrificing all the available space. The Samsung unit is securely supported, elevated to better withstand winter conditions, and oriented toward an area that allows good airflow.
The line set remains compact and protected. The isolators beneath the unit help reduce vibration transmission, while the support keeps the unit at a safe height above the floor.
For the owner, the result is a system capable of providing effective cooling during Montreal summers and powerful heating through much of the winter. WindFree™ technology adds appreciated comfort by reducing direct drafts once the desired temperature has been reached.
At AirGreen, we carry out wall-mounted heat pump installations in Ahuntsic-Cartierville, throughout Montreal as well as in Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore. Each location is assessed according to its actual constraints: building type, access, electrical supply, airflow, drainage, noise, and aesthetic requirements.
A successful installation is not limited to getting the machine running on the day it is commissioned. It must remain stable, accessible, quiet, and efficient for many years. This is precisely the vision that guided our work on this Samsung WindFree™ MaxHeat installed on a balcony in Ahuntsic-Cartierville.
